Shin Hye Sung fined for gambling

Shin Hye Sung has been found guilty of excessive gambling.

The talented vocalist of Shinhwa has been fined W10mil ($8,600) by the judge for his crime. From July 2007 to April 2008, Shin Hye Sung visited Macau five times and spent about W140mil ($120k) in baccarat games.

If you didn't know, gambling is illegal in Korea; Article 246 of the Criminal Act punishes those who gamble and Article 247 of Criminal Act prohibits anyone from hosting a gambling place for profit. Although the law has given very few exceptions such as gambling between family and friends for very small amount of money (10 cent bets), there are few facilities that allow access of Korean citizens (one casino and few racing tracks), you can thus be charged for gambling even if you play overseas.

We haven't seen Shin Hye Sung on screen for a while, and it appears that we won't be seeing him nor a full Shinhwa in the near future.

His management agency, Good Entertainment said on the 16th:

Shin Hye Sung had by chance entered a casino to gamble, while on a vacation with friends in Macau. He couldn't resist the temptation and curiosity got the better of him, and he kept frequenting the casinos afterwards. We (Good Entertainment) did severely reprimanded him after learning about it, and Shin Hye Sung had showed remorse over his actions. He then stopped frequenting the casinos from April 2008 onwards. Shin Hye Sung is deeply regretful over his actions and feels that he has let his fans down who have supported him for the past 11 years. He will be stopping all his activities for the time being.

im not into gambling stuff, or do i support this, but, why was he punished?

Selly's avatar

pwned poor him i mean

littleblackconverse's avatar

wow…what’s up with korean entertainment these days? Soon as one “scandal” dies down another one takes its place -_- I’m surprised about this though…looks can be sooo deceiving >.<

ihearthyori's avatar

since when was gambling illegal?

unless it was at an unauthorized casino?

no avatar

why??....gambling is legal in macau…....

MelodySky's avatar

Really? D: Is there a source or something?

no avatar

i don’t get it.  so what is the crime here?  its legal.  o_O   people goto vegas all the time to gamble.  whats so different about gambling in macau?

no avatar

O_O gambling is legal in Macau… why was he fined? for gambling excessively out of the country?

no avatar

hahaha did anyone else notice that the first few comments were all of shock?  they make it seem like he did something sooo horrible.  its just a game.  who cares how he spends his money.  it shouldn’t be any of our concern.  bc it isn’t ours.  -___-

no avatar

u get fined for gambling? wow over here nobody gives a damn, ppl just say ‘it’s ur money do wot u want with it’

Jaz*'s avatar

honestly the only reason i felt bad was for him getting fined otherwise gambling would be his own choice XD

Sandy_Cheekz's avatar

seems like a scandal
and a stupid one at that -.-

TaeYang's Baby Momma's avatar

I don’t get it gambling excessively!???

no avatar

was he fined by the korean courts or the macau courts? if it was the korean courts then wtf has his gambling overseas got to do with them and if it was the macau courts then why the hell do they have gambling areas in the first place. and its just gambling. i do it. its not that big a deal.

Haleyy's avatar

I don’t see why he got in trouble for it.. I thought gambling was legal in Macau?

GoP-Demon's avatar

ROFL double loss. I’m pretty sure its legal in Macau so…. The korean gouvernment is smart. Stop people from gambling by taking their money away. Although…. I don’t see what overseas gambling has to do with anything >>

no avatar

Hyesung and his forever addiction to games.
I’m not sure why the first few comments are so shocked…regular ppl visit casinos all the time.
Gambling’s illegal in Korea, but it looks like it’s overseas, so don’t exactly get this getting fined for overseas gambling.
Doesn’t matter, he’s working on his Japanese album at the moment, so that’s why you won’t see him till next year…besides it’ll be activities in Japan.

no avatar

omg. I’m seriously surprise. But why are you charge for something you did OUT of the country? I understand if you were caught doing it IN korea, but outside of korea? That’s not right. So if Koreans come here to Las Vegas and gamble and get “caught” does that mean when they go back to Korea they are charged? A country has no control on what their citizen do outside of the country ‘cause outside of the country, their law are no longer effective.

Dude! How can they fine a person for gambling in another country?! That’s hella wack. Poor Sungie!!!! Hopefully he’ll come out of this ok. Its seems wrong for them to punish him for gambling in another country. He should be allowed to do whatever he wants with his money.

LOL @ 15 (littleblackconverse). so young… so naive. The world has always been “corrupt” and there have always been scandals with celebrities (and non-celebs of course). It’s just now you know and understand and actually care. ::::
But anyway. 120K? Damn he doin that well for himself or he shot himself in the foot? Who the hell cares if he squanders away his wild eyes money (or whatever haha). It’s his money I say he can do what he wants. Who fined him by the way? ::::
Note: gambling addiction is real and should be treated. 120k sounds a little crazy considering that he probably didn’t get that rich off of shinhwa or his solo shit.

sandybox11's avatar

omg the world is ending! not. lol.
people gamble all the time. unfortunately.
that sucks for him but gambling is a bad habit
and that’s pretty crazy that he got in trouble for gambling in another country!!!
how did they even know? lol

beloved89's avatar

umm that’s lame. he wasn’t even doing it in korea! shinhwa <3

joyyyyy's avatar

thats a lot of money to spend on gambling…  i would rather just go shopping XD

DUMBO's avatar

its always the quiet one

iLiVE2LAUGh's avatar

Woahh~
I don’t see what the problem is, unless it wasn’t his money to begin with.

YeXing's avatar

Wait, why was he fined? If he gambles and loses his money, isn’t that his business? Why is he being fined? Unless gambling is illegal?

no avatar

@32 The thing is he spent 120K, but he won 140K.

Music Box's avatar

this doesn’t make sense is there more details to this or what because
this seems extremely stupid o_O I can’t stand scandals

JessC's avatar

I’m confused as to why he was fined for gambling in another country. Why is it any of their business in the first place? He did nothing wrong in Korea so WTF? Is it b/c he is Korean that Koreans should not gamble in any country? If so, that’s stupid.

no avatar

rofl at @39

you can’t read, can you?

140mil KRW is the equivalent of $120k USD

no avatar

@42 Err..obviously, I’m CAN read because that’s why I said he WON 140K, not SPENT 140K. In another article, it says he won 140K (which this article does not)...why would I need to restate the obvious? Please check your own eyes before worrying about mine.

no avatar

WTF! You are not allowed to spend your own money?
US should be defending freedom in S.Korea instead of worrying about nuclear capabilities of N.Korea. But US won’t, just as they won’t slap human rights violation on Saudi because Saudi lets US keep military base and also throws in some oil.

Tuhina22's avatar

Gambling isn’t the greatest, but if you’ve got that kind of money, I say why not go out and press your luck? It doesn’t seem like he’s an addict. I’m not getting the “scandal” here D:

I still like Hyesung just fine :D

xSonniix's avatar

Wow im sorry but that’s stupid.
Getting fined by your contry when ur not in it?...control freakish much?
Eh here in america we aint much better either, everywhere has their pros and cons.
Like a lot of ppl said, its his money if he wants to waste it all then its his choice. Hell i know if i had the amount of money he had…...well i’d go shopping….BUT thats besides the point lol.
he has the $$ so let him have fun with it.

GaEulNr1's avatar

WTF is wrong with you people? Go back to your 3 year old kid shows and live in your Teletubby land.
He only gambled. Big deal. Grow up.

soda!'s avatar

... Gambling in other countries when you’re an Korean citizen is illegal?

Tulips's avatar

I don’t understand why people are going “OMG he gambled, oh and he smokes! The world is ending, he’s going to hell.” or people who are sticking up for him. Honestly and unfortunately, he knew the risks of gambling. It’s not like a Korean celebrity getting in trouble for gambling hasn’t been in the news before.
First of all, it’s GAMBLING. it’s not like he was dealing drugs. It’s not the best habit to grow, but its an outlet for having fun.
I find the only bad part of this situation is the fact he knew he was breaking a law as a Korean citizen, not the fact that the act of gambling.
Love Shinhwa, but if you commit the crime, so to say, deal with the consequences. But hey, if I had some of that Shinhwa money, I’d gamble too. lol
Oh, and stop asking why he got fined, since gambling in Macau is legal. Read the article. It states that the Korean government sometimes fines Korean citizens for gambling out of the country too. Might have something to do with him attracting attention by going over there five times and spending 120,000 dollars. lol

jhadem's avatar

maybe he’s just bored because he doesn’t have the other shinhwa members to play with..haha!
shinhwa fighting!
