Se7en is going back to Korea

Se7en is going back to Korea ... this fall, this according to an interview with Yonhap news and YG Entertainment CEO / Former Seo Taiji member Yang Hyun Suk.

Before he returns to Korea, he'll finish up his activities in America and Japan. Se7en plans to release his debut song "Girls" on iTunes on March 10th. Then two to three months down the line they're planning to release a second single. Se7en will then go to Japan in the summer to have some activities in the Japanese market. Finally returning back to Korea in the Fall, after more than 2 years in America.

YG CEO Yang Hyun Suk said this in the interview:

This isn't about album sales, more so about signaling Se7en's debut into the American market. We don't except our first single to enter the Billboard Charts or even receive a lot of sales, but that doesn't mean we haven't succeeded. We worked with famous musicians and producers such as Lil' Kim and DarkChild, that in itself is half-success. I had meetings with some industry contacts in America, such as officials at Interscope Records. Through these meetings I was able to have Lil Kim's participation. Another prominent US musician will be featured in Se7en's second single.

We never anticipated Se7en's debut to take such a long time with so many delays. During the process, he was working hard learning English and constantly recording music. At the same time, we were still researching the American market for Asian artists. It's very difficult in America because there isn't any Musical Ranking Type shows like back in Korea. Even TRL on MTV is gone now, so that makes it difficult. Constant Radio play and Music Videos are most crucial in America, and MTV won't play just a random foreign singer with a different look, musical style, and someone who can't speak English properly. To have Se7en's MV play on TV and have his music play on local radio stations across the nation is the key.

Another key is to change the focus / perception from being recognized as solely Korean / Asian to simply Artist. A person who has succeeded in this is actress Kim Yun-Jin. She's recognized as her character on Lost and not solely as an Asian.

I said to Se7en that although he is a star back in Korea, he's a relative nobody over here. Pouring money into it doesn't guarantee that you'll succeed. You must work hard and make music that fits the taste of the American market. You must also have fluent English and present yourself in a way that'll attract an audience. Although money doesn't guarantee success, it does help. We need to receive capital and have deals in place with major record agencies. We would need them to help shoulder the marketing and promotional costs.

While I admire the effort, I think they're going about it the wrong way. Instead of a potential artist having to learn English, why not try to promote someone that's already fluent? Like David Choi for example, or even someone else in YG Entertainment such as Teddy or Danny (Taebin)? These people grew up and went to school here, so it'll be much less of a project than Se7en. Se7en might be a star in Korea, but like YG said himself. He needs to adapt and change for the American audience... well, these artists wouldn't have to.

@rewind, lol!!!

WTF???? Did they even try???
Nobody really knew BoA, but she’s doing really good and is making a name for herself.
They should get off their lazy asses and realize that they actually have to release and promote music to become famous and known. It’s not gonna fall in their laps.

@ 51
Did you even read the article? -_-
They’re still going to try.
Why do I feel like a lot of you just read the titles and just start posting comments? >_<

for once i agree with an article here..that’s what i’ve always said…promote someone who is already fluent..cuz this whole learning english is really hard under this much pressure !!

YG will twist words when Se7en gets back to Korea..He’ll be like Se7en got to work with Lil Kim and Three Six Mafia and everyone will worship Se7en, not even knowing that those artists are not really big T_T.

i’m glad yg finally realized it
its just too early for asia to conquer the west
or maybe its america that’s not ready
but well, the point it, its just not time yet

I wish they would do something about Taebin.
I miss him so much!

mia's avatar

@ 58
No, YG isn’t one to twist words like that. xD
I’m sure he’s well aware that Lil Kim and Three Six Mafia aren’t exactly the “high rollers” in America (though I’m sure he still appreciates their help, because they’re still somewhat known).
YG’s BIG problem is giving out plans/dates that he eventually ends up pushing back, lmao.

lol Taebin wouldn’t do well here. Ever heard of Jin?

Just because they’re were raised and born in the U.S. doesn’t mean they’ll be successful.

pancakes, you can’t be serious.

no avatar

yeahh that’s ture. they should send Teddy or Danny

mia's avatar

For those of you saying “Teddy or Danny should go”...
umm, maybe they didn’t WANT to go??!
YG never pushed Se7en to go to the U.S. - this was Se7en’s dream.

Tiffy's avatar

@mia, STFU. I don’t know what the fuck your malfunction is, but I suggest you get over it. Yes, I did read the article for your info.

I heard of Jin and he’s garbage, his music stinks and he’s only good as a freestyler. Not to mention he had no promotion.

I as an American get rather disappointed when I read some comments on this site. I think people are way too cynical and jaded. Sure the American market is hard to crack…Unless you have a gimmick. For instance Justin Timberlake went from a boybander who (excuse me for saying this) had a market of mostly teenaged white girls to a cross cultural urban artist who now has a fanbase that represents every walk of life because he came with a signature sound crafted for him by Timbaland. A couple decades ago that’d be almost unthinkable.

But now that’s the trend, white artists have become capable of breaking into markets which were previously “reserved” for black artists(JT, Nelly Furtado, Lady Gaga, Natasha Bedingfield, etc.) And I think nowadays American culture is finally doing what people claimed it had already been doing for years. It’s melding. If Blacks and Whites can do it, there’s no reason an asian superstar can’t be a part of that process.

Negative attitudes from the fans is what has screwed Se7en over. I’ll ask you all this: Do you really think executives don’t pay attention to what’s said online?

@ mia
Tiffy has a point. I get that they’re still going to “try” but what’s better than trying? Yeah actually doing. They have yet to release anything to test the waters, they can’t simply make assumptions about the feelings of the entire market when most haven’t even gotten a chance to make a judgement one way or another.

^J4red,
Thank you for your comment.
As a Se7en fan, it really hurts me to see how many people have become so cynical towards his attempt (and dream) to break into the U.S..
Of course, we’re not sure if he’s going to be successful or not, but so many netizens here are already dissing him before he actually makes his debut. I can understand the doubt, but some aren’t considerate about the process they (Se7en & his ppl) are trying to take with this. There’s no guarantee about how all this will end up, but it doesn’t hurt to try.

mia's avatar

@ 70
I understand what you’re saying that they haven’t actually “released” anything. And that’s why I said RMQ sucks. I don’t know what strategy they’ve been doing all this time, but it doesn’t seem to be working.
I wouldn’t point at Se7en nor even YG for this though, because they are trusting RMQ to promote him well (which they haven’t been doing well so far).
I think Se7en is doing the best he can with what he can do, unfortunately he might be in the hands of the wrong people who would help him. (RMQ)

★corraaaaa's avatar

For me, it’s not that I hate Se7en or anything. But yes, it does hurt him to try. His career in Korea and Japan is virtually nonexistent right now and it’ll take a HELL of a lot of work for him to regain the status he once had. By disappearing for two years to work on his dream, he may as well have just retired for all they care about him now. If he was really serious about this, he would have tried HARDER. Undoubtedly he’s working hard as is, and maybe it’s RMQ’s fault. But when your dream is to overcome the subtle prejudice against Asians in the American market, you have to try a helluva lot harder than just hard. If that makes sense. lol. He could have pushed and pushed and pushed for RMQ to manage him better, or to get another agency altogether, even if that meant a breach of contract.

When his album comes out, I’ll still support it. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t still disapprove of it. This is all just imo, though. lol.

come back. come back now.

it is awesome that he will be returning to korea, but
i still don’t get what he was trying to accomplish in America
just so people can listen to a song and remember his name
or try to remember
and then he will “eventually” be back
as much as i love Se7en… they did a bad job of promoting him
he stuck to the west coast and that isn’t the entire USA
you got the east coast too you know

Another thing is, that the companies are trying too hard hard to sell the “asian” factor. Why should he be treated differently just because of that?

They should look at all of this in another angle. Se7en, assuming that he really wants to make it in America, should try harder if he wants to compete with thousands of american artists there.(proper English would be a good start)

The asian factor alone simply won´t cut it for him.

He certainly has the looks to attract a crowd.

His songs though, are in no way suited for US-listeners.

I like Se7en but this US thing is just not working for him. I agree with bringing Teddy or Taebin.

though it has been two years i dont think now is not such a bad time
i mean which male singers are his competition both justin and usher are on haitus
and well unfortunately chris brown is going to take a hellava time to recover from his scandal
anyway i hope se7en the best of luck
techincally its only been a year and half he did hold concerts in korea and japan in 2007 so about people forgetting him i dont know if thats exactly true
the time hes going to absent is the time most artist take to record a new album so i think his fans will rememeber once he performs again

surprise.

I hear a subdued tone in that statement… it’s like “Yea… we’ll just throw the song out into the market and pray it will make us a buck or 2…” raspberry

But… I think it’s good that he’s going back. And I agree they should try to debut someone else. Someone who is able to adapt to the culture.

sierraskyeshoei's avatar

The statement has a defeated tone to it. It sounds like “Let’s just toss the song out there and see if we can make a buck or 2 since things are not working out…” raspberry

But I think it’s good he’s going back. And they should really consider sending someone more in touch with American culture.

YG’s statement was perfect.
On the writer’s comments: Se7en is arguably more talented than the other YG artists, and his appeal would be better suited with pop music. There are already failed Asian rappers in the U.S. market, and while Taebin seems like a good shot, Se7en also has the dancing ability to cater to a predominantly teenage audience (see Chris Brown).

OMG SHOCKER!!! O_O no! please dont go back! im counting on him! i believe he can definitely make it here! *ends sarcasm* lol

why did i laugh when i read the title?? it’s like those are the words that i’ve been waiting for so long…

while se7en was in america i thought that would automatically mean he’d being doing stuff in conjunction with 1tym gummy big bang and all ygers who have at some time connected to the us. they could have made a real force together but they have to realize they would start from a lower place than they’re used to. like a smaller scale tour would be nice and then the fans could actually see them and not just be expected to channel the money. but they were expecting radio play? they play like 10 songs on the radio… i agree, Jin was even a BET sensation and then, like, nothing. not that his product is super commericial but there are literally ZERO asian artists in the commercial media and it’s not because there arent tons of asian-american bred hip hop, r&b, rock etc acts trying. true actors are there but nothing on the radio or mtv. tho dir en grey supposedly has their video on mtv sometimes? though i didnt catch it… speaking english is a big plus. i’m happy overseas acts know that the fans are here to support them but american kids might have to break the market first.

Does it mean that YG didn’t invest much in Seven?  Maybe he’ll bring a better style back to Korea from what he has been learning/practicing during these 2 years.
The statement from YG pretty much confirms their failed attepmt of breaking into the US market.
