Se7en is going back to Korea

Se7en is going back to Korea ... this fall, this according to an interview with Yonhap news and YG Entertainment CEO / Former Seo Taiji member Yang Hyun Suk.

Before he returns to Korea, he'll finish up his activities in America and Japan. Se7en plans to release his debut song "Girls" on iTunes on March 10th. Then two to three months down the line they're planning to release a second single. Se7en will then go to Japan in the summer to have some activities in the Japanese market. Finally returning back to Korea in the Fall, after more than 2 years in America.

YG CEO Yang Hyun Suk said this in the interview:

This isn't about album sales, more so about signaling Se7en's debut into the American market. We don't except our first single to enter the Billboard Charts or even receive a lot of sales, but that doesn't mean we haven't succeeded. We worked with famous musicians and producers such as Lil' Kim and DarkChild, that in itself is half-success. I had meetings with some industry contacts in America, such as officials at Interscope Records. Through these meetings I was able to have Lil Kim's participation. Another prominent US musician will be featured in Se7en's second single.

We never anticipated Se7en's debut to take such a long time with so many delays. During the process, he was working hard learning English and constantly recording music. At the same time, we were still researching the American market for Asian artists. It's very difficult in America because there isn't any Musical Ranking Type shows like back in Korea. Even TRL on MTV is gone now, so that makes it difficult. Constant Radio play and Music Videos are most crucial in America, and MTV won't play just a random foreign singer with a different look, musical style, and someone who can't speak English properly. To have Se7en's MV play on TV and have his music play on local radio stations across the nation is the key.

Another key is to change the focus / perception from being recognized as solely Korean / Asian to simply Artist. A person who has succeeded in this is actress Kim Yun-Jin. She's recognized as her character on Lost and not solely as an Asian.

I said to Se7en that although he is a star back in Korea, he's a relative nobody over here. Pouring money into it doesn't guarantee that you'll succeed. You must work hard and make music that fits the taste of the American market. You must also have fluent English and present yourself in a way that'll attract an audience. Although money doesn't guarantee success, it does help. We need to receive capital and have deals in place with major record agencies. We would need them to help shoulder the marketing and promotional costs.

While I admire the effort, I think they're going about it the wrong way. Instead of a potential artist having to learn English, why not try to promote someone that's already fluent? Like David Choi for example, or even someone else in YG Entertainment such as Teddy or Danny (Taebin)? These people grew up and went to school here, so it'll be much less of a project than Se7en. Se7en might be a star in Korea, but like YG said himself. He needs to adapt and change for the American audience... well, these artists wouldn't have to.

I think yg just don’t know what to do with the guy. Such a waste, since he’s a talented artist.  Funny how they had wasted 2 years of his life ._.

Of course he’s not gonna make it in America.

I like how YG’s being honest, but really, we all knew that already. Like Paul said, I think Danny and Teddy would have a way better shot. They probably wouldn’t want to leave Baekkyung and Jinhwan out of it, but those two as a duo would actually be ok. As long as Teddy doesn’t continue his wangsta-ness… oh wait. It’s too late for that. :p

Se7en coming back now might be too late. Korea and Japan have kind of forgotten about him… or at least moved on. This whole America business was just bad overall.

I guess they finally realized that his US efforts weren’t going anywhere so he’ll be on his way back to his homeland. Stick to what you know and do best se7en and just resume your Korean activities.

They should learn about the market strategy and the music before let the boy go to US. Is not like they are really new with the US market and condition.
I agree it’s all about preparation, but in the process they wastes his already good carrier and let him disappointed at the end.

From what it sound, it looks like YG already lost his hope on seven carrier in US and just drop his singles without do much about it…

I think the problem is that Danny and Teddy are getting a little too old to start over someplace new. Also, Danny and Teddy’s baller asian look isn’t very marketable in the US. Se7en’s more clean cut look is definitely more marketable. Well, who knows. I wish him luck though!

Most people who have commented don’t seem to know what this means. He isnt giving up on America, but rather, after 2 singles and an album, will go back to Japan and then Korea to do some work. He’ll continue to be in the US market as well, though.

Also, Se7en’s working on a debut here also because he wants to. If he really didn’t want to do this, he wouldn’t. Simple as that.

Why don’t (many) people seem to understand this..?

no avatar

wow….soon it will be 2 years since SE7EN came to America to work on his debut and only 2 singles released?  and who knows how they will do.  That letter nearly admitted defeat….how unfortunate.

crypticbluerose's avatar

I never thought about our lack of music ranking shows, like we used to have. Makes things quite a bit harder. I think 106 and park still comes on though. I don’t watch BET no-more though myself.

well good luck to him.

Peachdoll's avatar

wow that was a shock. They wasted so much time, but it’s good that they realised it now and not over 10 years :O Yaaay Se7en!

Meepstio's avatar

wow I feel sorry for YG. It’s like all this effort for nothing..
hopefully a lot of people will buy his song on I-tunes.[And hopefully play on the radio?] Honestly I only think BET will play his video.

If SE7EN can’t make it here how does he expect Big Bang to?

Lady Tee's avatar

Its hard for a person that’s not black to make it in the hip hop world without being branded as copycats. Only people I can think of non-black are JT and Robin Thicke and that’s because they have big people working with them, T.I, N.E.R.D, Timbalake etc.

I wish him all the luck though! Se7en fighting!

mia's avatar

RED QUEEN MEDIA sucks in handling Se7en’s promotions, that’s why there’s so many delays in anything happening with him in the U.S..
They’re a new, amateur company.
Also, do not take everything what YG said, especially when it comes to “plans” and dates, because YG themself are always pushing dates back (we’re still waiting for the girlgroup!). So who knows if he’s really gonna have a Korean comeback THIS year.
Se7en came to America, because he wanted to try breaking in, not because he knew he could break in.

no avatar

i so agree with what you said. why waste money when you can save money and get better results? xP

XxkurdyangelxX's avatar

god that was a waste of time. I think his career in korea and japan may have flopped! its been so long, loads of people have probably forgotten about him!! best of luck to the guy..I hope he can atleast pick up his career from where he left it. I hope he doesnt go away quietly like some people do.

cookybear's avatar

so hes guna waste a load of time failing in america, when he could make a good comeback in korea

no avatar

You can’t be succesful in America as an asian singer. I don’t see why they are trying. Only thing you can do to become succesful there is a collabo with someone like Kanye West or Pharrell Williams and make a super catchy commercial song.

The_Lost_City's avatar

dammit why are they doing it like that?? it doesnt work like that in america, he cant release a single every 3 months!!
—————————-
and he cant just disappear, unless he wants to become a one-hit wonder…he has to commit here for at least a year!!

Jeanne's avatar

exactly, i agree with the post. they should get people that already know the american market and have grown up around it. i think it’s because they get korean americans who make it in korea that they think they can bring a korean to america and make it. but we’ll see how things go. smile

Lady Tee's avatar

oh, not BB…Even if Se7en made it, that doesn’t automatically mean BB will make it…Boy bands are a thing of the past, as much as I love DBSK, boybands just aren’t wanted if they don’t bring anything new that’ll make people think, ‘hey boybands are not so bad’ and I don’t see Big Bang bringing anything new into the American market.

cassie.blingout's avatar

I think it is difficult to survive in America’s music industry because it is HUGGEE and extremely packed with people everywhere, so i would say that seven just lack some luck. it is not easy to get noticed there.but then again, i admire him for standing by his dream somehow. good luck!

i don’t think his 2 years in the states was time wasted at all.  most of us don’t know what he was doing while he was here.  i highly DOUBT the guy just sat on his ass playing video games all day.  he came here to pursue a goal and if better english is all he got out of it then he’s a lot better off than these other kpoppers who never even tried.  se7en’s a young guy…his popularity is gonna still be there when he gets back to korea.

and it cracks me up whenever the conversation turns into “they should find someone in the states who already has good english”...well, DUHHH!!!  don’t you guys think they ALREADY KNOW THAT???  why do you think SM, JYP, etc keep having these auditions in the states?  kollaboration has also been around for a while too.  the bottom line is…it’s not easy finding asian talent with mass market appeal.  asian will get there but it’s gonna take some time.

rukiddenmeh?!'s avatar

yeah i agree with you that they should try to someone who’s already fluent in english. 1tymmmm<333

—————————-De La Methode—————————————-

You´re speaking my mind here. They certainly are doing this all the wrong way.
Why the hell would people in the US bother to listen to someone who isn´t fluent in their language? What kind of impression is the artist giving to the audience?

Why deliver some half assed number when there´s still so much work to do? And excuse me—-but someones voice is a very CRUCIAL factor in music industry. He needs to get that under control before recording in another language.

After all, you certainly wouldn´t go to a doctor who´s never learned to hold a scalpel properly either?

Don´t get me wrong here—-I like listening to some korean music (even though I don´t understand that much of it)—-that way at least, I don´t get the feeling of half-assed songs.

(by the way——-Se7en should have released “Crazy” instead—-much better song)

At first RMQ seemed promising in handling Se7en’s attempt to crossover to America, but so far they’re a bit disappointing.
Se7en is basically the first ‘project’ for this company, so they probably don’t even know what they’re really doing and/or not executing their plans well.
It’s already tough as it is for someone like Se7en to break into America, knowing there’s all kinds of things working against him. Having an amateur company helping him do so isn’t making it any easier.
I can’t say if RMQ is or isn’t trying their best, but eveything they’ve done just seems lacking.
Maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about, but it’s really worrying.
And as fans, unfortunately, all we’re left to do is give them (RMQ) the benefit of the doubt - as they have Se7en’s career (and rep) in their hands.
I felt like so much damage has already been done, and all I can do is try to hope that’ll it get better…
(I wrote this @soompi, but I wanted to say it here too) x]

lol YG’s last paragraph in his interview just basically tells us they dont have the money.
and i agree with de la methode, why se7en in the first place? teddy and danny would’ve been much better, and im not even talking about speaking english.

lol @ “half-success”. Se7en is really popular in Korea, and even in Japan, so he should just stay here. For the most part it seems Korean actors/actresses do better than Korean singers in America (dunno if rain counts but at least he got decent coverage in Speed Racer). I wish Se7en would come back sooner I really enjoyed his old stuff before he left for the U.S. :’[

this was so anti climactic… *sigh* se7en it seems it all went wrong
better luck to the next guy who tries!

i hope at the very least he got to bang a white chick
If he did, at least he’ll go back to korea with something to show for his efforts

Hideto16's avatar

30.(bobacious) I get what your saying, but your saying it all wrong see JYP already has a company here in the US…so instead of audition people in the US and bringing them back to Korea…why doesn’t he just debut them here? Huh come on JYP!!!
All those people from US that are in kpop groups could have all tried to debut here!! But BoA is a different story, she seems to be doing well

Being brutally honest in my Opinion, I think it is very possible that black Americans and black artists do not want to lose domination of the US music market, can feel some of it starting to slip away from them because trends are changing now, and they are fighting hard against it.
Many hate Akon, an immigrant, for signing on and bringing out a white New Yorker like Lady Gaga and a latino like Colby O’Donis to keep up with the changing scene. If they really want equal treatment of talent and not be used as a carrot to draw Asian Americans in to see black artists perform, Akon is the only one I can think of who will honestly do that. Otherwise they have to do try to do what Gaga did and come in through Europe, Canada, and Australia but without the powerful support that Akon gave.
The age of Latin USA is dawning and there really is no holding it back. It demands more diversity.

@pancakes: what are you talking about? African Americans still don’t have domination of the US music market. And don’t give me BS about Obama being the president, there’s still no equality.
What America needs a damn reality check, our country started out as a country of IMMIGRANTS and will ALWAYS be a country of IMMIGRANTS.

i give him props for giving his best… i think he will succeed one day but that day is not today…heheh i really miss his music and it’s true America is not that into music like in Korea or japan where they have show that shows ranking… eheh i wish they did though it’ll be tight!
