Se7en, BoA, and Wonder Girls in People Magazine

Korean Artists Se7en, BoA, The Wonder Girls, and Japanese artist Utada Hikaru have a half page feature in the April 20th Edition of People Magazine. The feature is titled, "Coming To America... Asian Pop Stars." It's not too detailed, only giving a snippet of info about the artists, but still, it's pretty cool that they're in People Magazine. And at least they don't think all asians look alike. Remember the last time an asian artist was in People Magazine? (Rain is that really you?)

I’ve never understood why people like Utada so much. She can’t sing or dance. Never been a fan of Se7en and I was really disappointed with “Girls” I mean I usually like all of Rodney Jerkins beats, but Se7en just killed it for me. The Wondergirls are fine they have some catchy songs as does BoA.

I’m glad they’re finally getting the recognition they deserve! (8 I just don’t like the “sounds like” comparisons though. BoA is much more put together than Britney Spears. .__.; She’s more talented, too.

Kool! I also would like to see Shinee & Big Bang make their way into American limelight also. Boa, Se7en, and the Wondergirls are truly awesome and I believe they can succeed much more.

meh. The artists that I personally consider interesting aren’t reaching out to the US market because they
a) Don’t have to
b) Don’t have the funds to

so… yea. It’s a shame that more people don’t encourage other types of music other than bubblegum pop (which I also enjoy) in Corea.

wonder girls!!! go go girls!!!

omg haha yes, i remember the time they did one on Rain and they put some other guys pic =P anyways out of all of them i personally like utada hikaru more

Why did they pick that picture for Wonder Girls? >.>

Se7en = Justin T.
BoA = Britney S.
WG = Spice Girls
Utada = “lightweight” MARIAH CAREY???? I like Utada, but I don’t think so…

Waah nice! :D

Alright, I’m buying the issue just for this half a page. Exposure, however tiny, is still exposure.

@24 mia..
For some reason i kinda like their image that way…
It’s different from other groups. at least they try something out of ordinary, although i’m sure the americans will find it very VERY odd and laughable.

Not sure if WG gonna make it there, but FIGHTING WG!!!

EpikPOP's avatar

@9: Im not trying to be a bitch or anything so sorry if i offend you but some reasons are: she can sing, she doesnt dance so what? Her songs are good and she puts feeling into them. Her songs arent really the types of songs that a person would bust a move for. Yes WG and BoA have catchy songs but i dont think they are “talented” when it comes to live perf but there are some performances that are really good.

Woaaah, so Wonder Girls are releasing an English version of Nobody in America? I didn’t even know that. xD

yay wonder girls…!!! but seriously… why that picture…?! there are so many better ones…

I never realized how many people were debuting here O_O
They all have a chance if they go about things the right way.
Utada’s one of my favorites =P

Oh man, now I wish my mother still bought People. I’s not much, but it’s something and they even mentioned WG! That’s a surprise in itself. Hopefully this will really make people check them out - Utada’s new album isn’t bad, tbh. I don’t agree with her ‘sounds like’ at all though.

@ 17
Well, they want to give people some sort of idea what they sound like and they chose the artists they considered their sound to be most like. I can’t say I agree with all of their picks but that kind of thing is to be expected. They do that with other artists in other magazines too.

Where did that BoA pic come from? It doesn’t even look like her…>.<...it’d be funny if it wasn’t. LOL But speaking of looking alike…that WG pic, why that one?! Oh well, a mention is better than nothing. I wish them all good luck.

goldenGAZE's avatar

Utada seems to be doing the best at the moment, lol @ the person who said she can’t sing. I was VERY disappointing with BoA’s album but i liked IDIFL, wish her luck since she is working hard.

I want a copy of the magazine now ^^.

Go BoA! Think I might have to go out and get this magazine… 2009 will be the year of the Asian Invasion.

no avatar

@9 Utada can sing better than 99% of kpop stars, that includes BoA, WG and se7en.

On another note, i think the WG American debut is rushed. BoA and Se7en have some American appeal, but i really don’t see it in wg. they are compared to the spice girls, and we all know that was in the 90’s. Also not to mention how bad the WG’s engrish is, even compared to BoA and se7en

purpleheights36's avatar

Honestly, I think there are better pictures of se7en. .say. .allkpops background? Well at least they’re getting some recognition and exposure. . Best of luck to them! Hwaiting! and err. . to Utada; gambatte? (is that even right? i’m not that familiar with japanese words).

As much as I love Utada, her voice has gone DOWNNNN in ability.

And I swear, I’ve never seen that BoA picture ever. It almost looks like a Chinese popstar.. can’t put my finger on it.

Wow, so that’s what asian superstars are going to be known for here in america… the asian versions (read between the lines: wanna-be’s) of Mariah, JT, Britney Spears and Spice Girls.
Very, very flattering.

Utada can sing but she strains her voice too much. Since Utada sings in her own “style” it sounds out of place in some of her tracks since her voice is more suited for ballads and RnBish songs. It’s kind sad how PEOPLE magazine also points out her lyrics.. her songs would be so much better if she didn’t write the lyrics. Her lyrics might work in Japan but in the US its just too cheesy.

As for BoA.. songs are good but she needs more variety than just DANCE tracks.
And her music style is not very eye popping since it’s nothing new. BoA needs to come up with her own style to catch people’s eyes.

SE7EN’s track is cool but the sound is a bit outdated. I still think he has a chance if he uses different songs and bust out those dance moves of his.

Wondergirls.. um? An English ver of Nobody would be cool.. but I can honestly say people are gonna say if they’re trying to act black or be posers with that ‘Dreamgirls’ look.
Nor or their vocals up to par either. But it’s this (fob.. the bright colors, etc) look Wondergirls has that might get them attention though..

I think they all should just stick with their own style they had in Korea or Japan and bring it here in the US. There’s no point in following trends in the US, because people get tired of it and want to see/hear something new.
