SBS Gayo Daejeon - Taeyang and Junsu Piano Battle

Xiah Junsu Taeyang 2008 Gayo Daejeon Awards

According to our poll, this was the most highly anticipated special stage battle of the night!

The Piano battle between TVXQ's Xiah Junsu and Big Bang's Taeyang went down on December 29th, 2008 at the 2008 SBS Gayo Daejeon Awards.

Taeyang performed "Don't wanna try" by Frankie J. And this wouldn't be a post about Big Bang if I didn't say, he really should stop trying. But I do have to admit, his English has gotten better. If this was the 2008 ESL Awards, he'd be the gold medalist.

Superior vocalist Xiah Junsu performed "My Everything" by 98 Degrees. Although his Engrish was cringe worthy and funny at the same time, his vocals clearly outshined Taeyang's.

You guys be the judge, who did better?

How come no one comments about how Junsu had backup vocals and background music? o_O

Uhm, idk this was really a piano battle.
It would have been better if it was just piano. No singing.
Junsu should’ve sang Frankie J’s song. I think it fits him better, in my opinion.

what the hell people. what do you mean junsu won? this is a PIANO BATTLE. not a singing battle,Taeyang looked like he cared more about playing the piano. Junsu used backround music and vocals, wtf? then whats the point of playing the piano.piano skills goes to Taeyang.

I think both of them got the engrish going on, but they were better than I expected since I could understand them.  I agree that TaeYang chose a more challenging piece to play but I have a feeling SBS decided to give him more airtime focusing on his piano skills since they knew he got nothing on JunSu when it comes to vocals.  I’m sure a lot of people already know JunSu is awesome on the piano.

Both did well, but JunSu’s voice just shines too brightly even for Mr. Sunshine himself.

I’m just curious as to why Taeyang only had a piano as accompaniment and Junsu had background music and everything.

i liked junsu’s performance better.
i know it’s a piano battle and all, but junsu clearly outshined taeyang.
even without junsu’s performance, i didn’t really like tayang’s. he doesn’t sing with enough passion that frankie j sings with. that song did not work on him.
but taeyang’s english was slightly better than junsu’s. lol

wow both were really good….i hope fans have become a bit more mature and respect both artists even if ur not a fan. I love tae yang to death and was so proud of his song and he sang so well (okay so he doesnt have as much range as Jun Su but his piano score was much more technical) and Jun Su was just great vocally even if his piano score was more simple and he had background accompany. Either way, both of em are winners….and u could see on their faces the support they had for each other. Junsu singing along with Tae Yang while Tae Yang clapped enthusiastically as the end of Jun Su’s perf…

VERYYY IMPORTANT QUESTION!!!
the song that Junsu sing.. is it live???
how did he have back group singer if it only him and the piano?????...
DONT GET ME WRONG
i LOVEEEEEEEE JUNSU!!!
but i was just wondering…....

sing wise.. Junsu win because he chose a HIGH pitch song and it was good!!!

melody wise… Taeyang win because he pick a hard song to play

Pronunciation wise.. Taeyang win beause i can understand EVERY WORD!!!

THEY BOTH MELT MY HEART!! I LOVE BOTH OF THEM!!!!

dat1flygirl's avatar

I like Taeyang’s song better, but Junsu is a true vocalist!!!

What a breathtaking performance; I am in awe. smile

xiah is known for being the worst english speaker in dbsk, haha couldn’t understand him but his vocals were excellent

I would say both fail. Don’t get me wrong both are good singers BUT put them against Jay Chou the beast of a piano player they’d both fail epically. I just say this because I saw the piano battle that Jay Chou and some other famous dude does in his Secret movie. Ho-ly shiit!

no avatar

Adding onto my last post: it is Jay Chou vs Yu Hao. Here’s the clip
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbSeZh6apVk
Again, ho-ly shit. How can their fingers go so fast?!?

though i couldnt understand everything junsu said, his voice is just so calming, and his vocal range is much larger.
though, i enjoyed taeyangs performance too.

Junsu totally wins this performance, even if his english isn’t that good but still i understood it, and his voice totally made it up, he really got a higher range of voice compared to Taeyang.

Sakyan's avatar

I think they both did great, but junsu’s voice just overpowered his piano playing skills, even though he did have backup vocals and music he overpowered that too. His high notes was amazing, taeyang’s voice kind of crack a little bit but its okay atleast i understand most of what he was singing.. i love their engrish its just too adorable.

being a korean singer has nuthin to do with speaking decent english.its about singing ability and vocals.junsu not only sung well be he gave his heat out with such passion that speaking fluent english has nuthin to do with singing in the stage especially you’re an artist

no avatar

since this is a piano battle…
Piano skills: taeyang cause i heard more piano playing in his act
vocals: both, they sang how the song was supposed to sound soft/powerful
who looks more into it: junsu 0_o lol he was relli into it
and since everyone is judging on english i would say taeyang i understood him more( might have to do with he was singing more softer and junsu was going really high)
OVERall: hmm i think they both did great but i would say taeyang

**i wish i could play the piano= [ **

wow both of them has some beautiful talent
also taeyang’s english really impressed me.
the screams was crazy for the other dude whoa.

Su and Taeyang should make a lovechild… I mean TY’s English + Su’s amazing vocals = everybody satisfied xD

—I choose Junsu.

why are people saying taeyang’s engrish is better? i can’t understand decipher a word!

junsu’s was okay probably because the song is well known and people know the lyrics. but no engrish please.

Lol, this might come as a shock to people, but I just couldn’t resist: I’m almost 99% sure that the piano playing was pre-recorded, there were no signs of a mic in either of the pianos at all compared to the cumbersome voice mics.  I am a concert pianist, and have had recordings and live performances with Mics, and trust me, if you are going to sing with a Mic, the piano needs a Mic too.  Some might argue that the voice mic would pick up the piano, but it won’t sound so loud and in the foreground if that was the case.

So the point of the above paragraph?  This wasn’t a bloody piano battle at all hah.  I was expecting so much more from both of them, in that aspect I was sorely disappointed.  So what’s left are the vocals and stage presence. Though I have to say Taeyang’s feel for his song’s pretty good, still no competition, Junsu wins by a mile.  Even though Junsu had more off-key moments, overall his song was harder to sing, and he nailed it in terms of holding the audience’s attention, this boy’s a natural performer.

One last thing, an important part of a co-operative performance such as a piano duo or a concerto is to enjoy the other’s performance, or at least look like you enjoy it.  Whether it’s to smile and nod to the orchestra’s exposition, or to acknowledge and enjoy your partner’s performance, it’s important to show some enjoyment.  So Taeyang being the young performer he is, need to perhaps learn this skill, the audience will look at you for signs of appreciation towards other artists.

oh yes junsu’s vocals.. could he possibly be the best of korea? like seriously. bloody amazing.

prerecorded or not, Taeyang’s song is a lot more difficult to play listening to the chord progression. Vocally, I would have to hand it to Junsu. Overall the two of them did a great job.

considering taeyang had practise from big bang’s japanese album, he’s english should be much better than junsu’s. now if junsu had the same type of training…>.>’‘
vocally, hands down junsu beats taeyang here. if taeyang picked a harder song (not saying he’s isn’t hard but it just didn’t show enough range, etc.) then maybe it’d be a tougher decision to make. but here, junsu outshines him.

the heck TY was eaten alive ! although it was a good fight.. Junsu hitting those notes while looking at the piano at the same time, is amazing ! so effortless! and i love how he looks at TY at certain parts of the song !!! Go DOng Bang !! 1 pt. !!

stevewonder06's avatar

i agree with rxlcrab all the way. It really does look like the piano music was prerecorded lol. and about the background vocals and music…yea junsu had them but i think he could sing the song a capella if he wanted to and nail it lol. the engrish would be the only problem…>_< hehehe.

no avatar

TY has better english but Junsu’s vocals are definitely better..
eventhough i’m a VIP,i got to say Junsu’s de winner if dis is a singing battle although i dun understand a word he sang..
i din notice much on de piano since i can’t keep my eyes off Junsu..hahaha xD

too bad they didnt use yoochun cuz he’d probs own both english vocals and piano playing=D
but junsu and taeyang were still good =D

cutieroo's avatar

Junsu wins without a doubt. even though his english was a bit accented, his was better then Taeyang’s surprisingly, and he made up for it with his angelic voice. I LOVED it. I didn’t even know he could play the piano though, it was awesome. Taeyang’s performance was also great, such awesome piano skills.

no avatar

Don’t say taeyang didn’t enjoy or acknowledge junsu’s perf cause when junsu finished you can see taeyang clapping like he was his proud brother. if this was a piano and english battle, Taeyang wins..i love his smile <3 but overall, i prefer xiah’s perf even if i couldn’t understand what he was saying.
