SBS Gayo Daejeon - Taeyang and Junsu Piano Battle

Xiah Junsu Taeyang 2008 Gayo Daejeon Awards

According to our poll, this was the most highly anticipated special stage battle of the night!

The Piano battle between TVXQ's Xiah Junsu and Big Bang's Taeyang went down on December 29th, 2008 at the 2008 SBS Gayo Daejeon Awards.

Taeyang performed "Don't wanna try" by Frankie J. And this wouldn't be a post about Big Bang if I didn't say, he really should stop trying. But I do have to admit, his English has gotten better. If this was the 2008 ESL Awards, he'd be the gold medalist.

Superior vocalist Xiah Junsu performed "My Everything" by 98 Degrees. Although his Engrish was cringe worthy and funny at the same time, his vocals clearly outshined Taeyang's.

You guys be the judge, who did better?

Who had the wet panty inspiring performance?

both did good.
taeyang had better english skills. junsu on the vocals department.
<3

i wish that taeyang chose a different song.. his vocals didn’t shine in “don’t wanna try”

damn. it would be better if they just sung in korean.

that was a piano battle? more like a vocal battle. junsu hardly played, he concentrated on singing more. taeyang actually played and sang. i like taeyang’s performance more. great english unlike junsu’s engrish.

Both of their English is understandable… at some parts, and then at other parts… ^^”
Junsu looks like he has too much eye makeup on, but great performances by both of the guys!

DBSK FIGHTING!!

oh, for sure Junsu did better when it comes down to vocal prowess ... but u’re right ... Taeyang did better pronouncing the english words ...

junsu’s voice is amazing!~ love how he’s so passionate while singing..
his english is cute! xD
i feel like taeyang’s vocals
werent that great…and it’s not cuz
of the song he sung…but he is pretty good at the piano.
i dont think pronunciation really matters…

cookieech's avatar

Both did good as they showed they could sing and play on the piano at the same time smile

Tiffy's avatar

Junsu was awesome. He played the piano and sang the heck out of that song!!!!
I wish Taeyang had performed a different song. “Don’t wanna try” is one of my favorite songs and he didn’t do as great, but it was still nice to watch.

it’s not that junsu hardly played the piano. it’s just that the cameraman barely showed him playing while in taeyang’s perf there’s even a shot of just his hands. so yea, it does look like he hardly played.
and no, im not defending dbsk, lol. (for those who think so, dont even bother arguing alright? yea peace out! XD haha)

Beat's avatar

of course Junsu’s pronuciation is bad because he doesn’t practice much
but his singing made up for that
love his perf. so much <3

CandyGirl89's avatar

i think taeyang did better. i understood what he said. i did not even notice junsu was singing english until i notice i knew the song.

Wow. Taeyang’s english was awesome. I actually understood. o-o
I think he focused more on the piano rather than the vocals
where as in Junsu’s case, he evened out both sides.
You can tell by their expressions as to who was more into the performance.
Both performances were great. :D
I’ll vote for…

i tell u sumthin..
it’s not because Junsu can’t play piano or hardly play piano..but because the cameraman didn’t shoot to his piano..if u judge this based on his expression because he continue close his eyes while singing..it’s prove all of u that he got the skill..he can singing and playing piano without see the piano..how prof he is!

I liked junsu’s vocals and overall more.
Logically Taeyang picked the harder song to play, easier to sing, and junsu picked the song that’s easier to play and harder to sing.

I could care less about the pronunciation, it isn’t an English battle. Then again it wasn’t much of a battle period. It was just them singing and plying piano?

Hey guys watch me bring my inner fangirl out.

Xiahhhhhhhhhhhh Junsuuuuuuuuuuuu I Love you.

It was SOOOOOO HARD to decide so I chose Neither but I really liked both performances…If only there was a BOTH!!Excellent performance though!!

hapacalgirl's avatar

I think in this performance junsu had the better vocals but taeyang had the better song.  They both did great wih the piano though. Although I wish Taeyang chose a different song because he has a really nice rnb voice and this song doesnt show it that well (still love the song though) plus you could tell if you listen carefully that he was extremely nervous as would anyone going against junsu. Junsu is an amazing singer there is no doubt about that but he should stick to singing in korean its more pleasant to my ears. Taeyang doesnt have the range that junsu has but because of the rnb tone in his voice its more universal while junsu sounds best when singing in japanese and korean because of the higher pitch in his voice. All in all loved the performance

i like them both. <3 why couldnt u make both an option? =/

I liked this performance just because I think both of them are the best looking ones of each group. I’ve heard Taeyang perform this song before and I’m glad he finally slowed it down. His english has really improved. It was cute when they showed Junsu singing Taeyang’s song.

JJSnappy__HO?!^_^;;'s avatar

taeyang english is better but i dd understand what junsu said but you have to listen really closely both of them can play piano really well and singing junsu obviously won there (no saying taeyang is bad or anythin)his voice is so calming and warm that i dont care how pronounces it.he tried his best.^^ but i got to say even though i think our junsu (duckbutt/dolphin boy) was better taeyangs english was very good im impressed^^:D

why would u judge the performance by the english skills? i dont really care if i dont understand their english. i listen to korean songs and i dont understand them at all. get my point??? yuppp..

Oh and taeyang’s english is great because according to Amy Lee a choreographer who worked with them the big bang boys are taking 3 classes of English every week.

Dbsk is too busy country hopping to take classes i guess. Junsu does take glances at his fingers, but he is either looking up or his eyes are closed for the most part lol.

HyunJi's avatar

omg..junsu was….O_O
ASTONISHING.
i thought his english was pretty good actually.
he got A LOT better…he can actually pronounce his “th” now haha

no avatar

I actually prefer Taeyang. It’s a piano battle, and I think Taeyang played his song better. Junsu had bg vocals, and his melody wasn’t that prevalent. Of course Junsu had better vocals, but this is a composition battle.

this isnt a forum so i can spam here right?!
just wanna say one more thing! if u are a great singer u can sing greatly (lol) in ANY language. just feel like saying it raspberry

junsu first, hahaha

Junsu was jaw dropping.
An awesome and amazing performance from him
Taeyang did good too and his English is somewhat understandable
Although, Junsu’s English is not that good, we’re looking at talent hre.
Not perfect English. That high note he made gave me the chills.

P.S. Lol, are you sure this is a piano battle? Hehe, for my opinion it’s more like Voice battle because I only noticed their voices not the piano. But still *Two thumbs up

random because i cant wait anymore: DID U GUYS SEE DONG BANG STRIP?! OMFG!!!
(sorry :X)

I think Xiah’s outshined TaeYang, but nothing outshined YG family’s performance it brought the crowd to it’s feet.

well i was grading by english and how it was sang.you cant honestly say that if a american singer tried singing a korean song that you would not look at how they saying the words. i dont care how great your so called vocals are if i dont understand what you are saying what is the point of singing it.

Junsu is an amazing singer, his perf was so touching and emotive.
His vocals are so strong and he knows it.
Taeyang was good too, but I felt a little bad for him when they took his face, obviously he knew who was the best.

The BB dude did really well but when Junsu started, I totally forgot about him and how he did. LOL

rairakku's avatar

the notes in junsu’s song were more difficult to hit, but i feel like he went off-key more often than taeyang did (maybe it’s cuz my sister was also playing piano while i was listening to this -_-). and… he should stick with something he can pronounce better than english. he looked amazing, though :D
taeyang did well, too. i was really impressed with his english. i kinda wish he chose a more… rnb-ish song, but he did well anyway ^^
and he was so cute when he clapped for junsu at the end
the differing lengths of the two pianos are bothering me. it’d look so much cooler if they were the same length and fit together (like a puzzle! lol)

Because I don’t speak Korean and Japanese, and I know when a singer is good in any language.

Wow Taeyang’s english did get better! :] but i loved Junsu’s performance even if his pronunciation wasn’t great.

xiah junsu’s voice was angelic smile and he looked amazing.  i feel that taeyang’s song would be less well-received by the general audience, and r&b style is harder to pull off vocally.  He did a good job, and was smiling so sweetly and clapping for xiah junsu at the end smile~~~

Because I don’t speak Korean and Japanese, and I know when a singer is good in any language.
————
my point is dont sing in english if you wont sound good. i dont know korean or any other language so i sure as hell dont attempt to sing in it

sLaVe's avatar

If they had ONLY played piano and didn’t sing… it’d be much better. Actually, I take that back. if they only played piano WHILE BEING SHIRTLESS then it’d be much better.

“his (xiah) vocals clearly outshined Taeyang’s.”

Arie's avatar

hypocrites. is this a ‘who’s english is better?’ battle?
if you choose taeyang, at least choose him for the right reasons: his piano skills are amazing.
I’d still go with junsu, though. call me biased but his performance touched me a lot more, his voice is just gorgeous and he WAS playing the piano at the same time, he just didn’t have any piano solos.
also.. i loved how he actually enjoying taeyang’s performance, while TY didn’t even seem to acknowledge him…
