Newbie Actress Woo Seung Yeon Commits Suicide

Newbie actress Woo Seung Yeon (24) was found hung by her family on the 27th. The death is being ruled as suicide and the police have released the statement "Although there is no will found, before her death, she sent a text message to her younger sibling saying 'I'm sorry.'" She is known to have been suffering from depression after failing an audition and breaking up with a long time boyfriend. A family member revealed that she had received treatment at a hospital for her depression, but it had worsened in recent weeks and caused her to commit suicide.

Woo Seung-yeon started off as an internet uljjang, before modeling, and had even branched out into acting, appearing in the movie Herb and the mobile sitcom Yap. Her most recent role was in the movie Private Eye, which was released earlier this month. She was born in 1985 and was planning to return to return to her school, Joong Ang University where she was majoring in French Language & Culture.

In addition, her cyworld is getting attention as it was revealed that she wrote a message titled "Good-bye" on the 25th and had changed her background music to Toy's Sorry and Time Alone. Because the guest book function on her cyworld is closed, netizens have left their condolences through comments under her picture uploads.

‘.....found hung by her family…’

someone needs to brush up on her phrasing. That’s such a wrong way to put it.

RIP.

how stupid can some korean actresses get. it seems like a trend to hang yourself when you’re going through some rough times…i may not know what they have been going through, but seriously. is suicide the first thing that everyone thinks of when things get shitty??

no avatar

so dumb, WEAK,  so WEAK WTF. FREAKING WEAK IDIOTS. I DON’T THINK THESE KINDS OF PEOPLE DESERVE TO LIVE LONGER. yes I know I don’t have the right or this is the time. however, they DON’T KNOW HOW PRECIOUS LIFE IS. WHAT KIND OF SOLUTION IS TO TAKE ONE’S LIFE? YOU DON’T GO TO HEAVEN FOR TAKING YOUR OWN LIFe. SO WEAK. WEAK.

It is so sad to hear these things.  It is definitely a bad trend happening in Korea recently.  Honestly, I wish that people didn’t find suicide as the final answer as a way of solving their problems.  Suicide is not the answer for lack of success.  Depression probably makes it worse, and wishing that it didn’t happen doesn’t change anything, but still… my sincerest condolences to her family.  It’s always those left behind that suffer the most.

HeroofXanadus, that is such an insensitive thing to say.  Yes, life is precious and a gift, but it doesn’t mean you can go and call someone “weak” for making a poor decision.  As the article states, she was depressed and actually taking medication.  This means physically her body was producing too many and too little of certain chemicals.  It’s not as black and white as you might think.

Besides, she probably wasn’t thinking about going to heaven when she committed suicide.  It was just a fast way out of her current situation.  It’s really the family that suffers the most.  They’re the ones who grieve.  So please don’t say such things.  It’s rude and uncalled for in a situation as such.

My condolences to the family.
Any loss is a hard loss but a child who was just barely starting to do things.. with hopes, its just a sad sad thing.

Depression is a very serious thing.

I wish people would take it more seriously by offering REAL HELP than the usual “here are some meds, go home” routine.

All she had to do was see that things weren’t SO BAD.. there’s always something good in the bad.. -sigh-

I don’t think I’ll ever understand how so many people have the courage to end their own lives =/  Medication doesn’t always do the trick either. These people who were depressed needed to TALK to someone. This is really sad to hear.

RIP

the fucking government should think of a way about handling suicide cases, not running around banning all the songs that existed in this universe

My condolence to the family and I wish she may rest in peace. There is definitely “something wrong in Korean entertainment industry”.  Monopoly is the word, because of too much competitions with less competitive company´s having so many abusive PD´s, managers and people behind in this industry with so much influences by having money+power are absolutely to blame. Somebody has to do something!

suicide is deff not the right way to go
but sometimes people feel like they are trapped, can’t breathe, and have no escape from things. i just wish they could see the alternatives and reach out to people for help and guidance… it even says she was planning to head back to school. she could of headed in a different direction in life~

70. xiah.junsu I agree. The closest thing the government wasted their budget on was those HAHAHA campaigns telling people to be happy. As entertaining as they were, they aren’t going to work on a depressed person who finds life not worth living anymore because they’re not quite sane. They can’t be responsible for their actions. The government needs to address depression and mental illness to the public- it exists, provide help, support groups. (We’re very open about it in our country and we have one of the lowest suicide rates in the world) People need to be aware of it so they know when to get help. Otherwise they just do rash things like kill themselves. People who diss and say it’s a “trend”. Have you ever gone through depression? How would you know what emotions she was going through? How insensitive and shallow. Don’t judge if you don’t understand.

The insensitive ones here saying she’s weak and stupid to commit suicide needs to stfu. Others can never truly understand the extent of pain depressed people go through unless they’ve been there before.

This is truly tragic.  RIP to this lovely girl and much condolences to her family and friends.

it sad to see that people who go through depression believe there isn’t any other way to get out of it and pick suicide as the answer, but that isn’t the case. there is plenty of ways to get treated. i see suicide as a coward way out of a problem and it just hurts the other people involved in your life.

the doctors should have monitored her rather than just send her off with meds. she killed herself over such a little thing- depression can cause you to make stupid choices.

Honestly, no one should give a crap about people who just decide to end their lives because they failed an audition or broke up with their BF. Its not like everyone elses lives are utopia. If people show no more interest people might stop commiting suicde because right now it seems like a final publicity stunt.

affidare's avatar

Oh goodness, another suicide~? This is too sad… :\

what the heck….if they’re depressed, why can’t they just talk it out >< suicide is not an answer =[
