Megadeth Marty Friedman on TVXQ

Marty Friedman, former lead guitarist of heavy metal band Megadeth and a Japanophile recently shared his thoughts on TVXQ / DBSK / Tohoshinki:

(translation cr: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) / sharingyoochun@wordpress)

"They would sell even if they weren’t good looking! TVXQ’s singing ability is worth its value in money.

TVXQ, an accapella dance group from Korea, and who attended last year’s Kouhaku Uta Gassen, can be said to be the representative of “Global J-pop” with their impressive harmonizing.

Maybe fans will say it’s bullshit, but to me, if you can sing, you’ll be able to sell even if you weren’t good looking, right?

Their song [Bolero], is a great ballad that showcases their super vocals.
What surprised me was that compared to other J-pop ballads, the feeling for this song is dark. The beat is slow, and there was no usage of guitars etc. Even so, the song gave off a dark and haunting vibe to me.

I like K-pop too, and I listen to it often, and there are of course other songs with dark vibes too. The difference with J-pop is that K-pop uses Classic music as it’s foundation, thus naturally creating a melody with a dramatic feel.

At the “ending climax”, one person (Jaejoong) uses an almost feminine pitch to produce the effect of harmonizing between men and women; the harmonization from the 5 of them is amazing!"

It's pretty cool that a well respected musician like Marty Friedman in a genre like Heavy Metal would give praise to TVXQ. I suppose it shows that with their talent they can transcend borders and boundaries, good music is good music, talent is talent. Regardless of who, what, or where, if you hear something you like, you'll recognize it.

@241
i applaud your post. i am quite familiar with Marty Friedman because big bro is a big fan, though i don’t like his music i agree he’s a great musician and it’s a great honor for Tohoshinki when someone with his credibility praised them. but really, to have him say Tohoshinki as “the representative of global j-pop” makes me choke a bit since they’re born and bred in Korea lmao. and yep Bolero is one of their greater works so far.

I’m shocked when hearing Marty’s comment after my friend told me this news. He’s a genuine @$$ packed with talents. Megadeth my love. I was on a burst when reading some comments above, questioning about Marty’s talents, but a big thx to #241 (yo, got Metallica?) OK, calm down now.
To whoever sh*t questioning Marty doing wrong in pointing that Jeajoong whatever doing, check this out (look for comment from dbskdream) http://sharingyoochun.wordpress.com/2009/06/27/news-trans-090627-american-musician-marty-friedman-on-tvxq/#comments
Glad that there’re still good listerners out there, not only full of rabid f*cking listeners.
Hmm this group’s live perf of Bolero is cool (whatever link my friend sent me) but still keep my opinion - at least no decent music I see so far on this site.

great singers and great music should be appreciated even though it’s not your style or whatever. DBSK is talented, they work really hard to be what they are now.  they have the most members in their official fan club (which means there are WAY MORE who are not in it), they’re so great that i love them to death!

Frankly, I’m surprised Marty Friedman likes TVXQ’s vocals… because there are other groups out there that have better vocal capabilities. Since I like TVXQ, I’m glad someone in Friedman’s genre is praising them.

This is really old news, Marty Friedman made that comment on J-Melo during the time they were promoting Bolero which is around Jan/Feb 09.

GOOD NEWS FOR THEM! and for all the people who always teased DBSK, this fact is show the real DBSK, guys. They can sing more more more better than SuJu xD
and this statement was said by Megadeth’s member! Totally awesome, right?

Cieru's avatar

Having an artist such as Marty Friedman praising TVXQ is amazing because he’s from the heavy metal genre. He’s right when he said TVXQ would sell even if they weren’t good looking. All these non-fans talk bullshit about how us fans only like them because of their looks and how they have no talent. Talent is talent. Just because you don’t like their style, their songs and they’re overexposed, does not overpower the fact that they are talented singers. I always thought they were talented and having Friedman praise them himself just made me even more confident about them.
