Johnny’s Entertainment expansion into Korea
240 Commentsjohnnydorama in Rumors | 25 Oct 2008 - 04:50 PM
It looks like SM Entertainment won't be the only one benefiting from expansion into other countries. Just as SM Entertainment is the most dominant record label in Korea with their Allstar lineup, Johnny's Entertainment is SM's equivalent, if not superior, producing the top teen idol bands in Japan.
We've all seen the large boom in Korean entertainment throughout Asia these past couple years, especially with BoA and TVXQ in the Japanese market. Well, Johnny's Entertainment and their hit groups such as Arashi, SMAP and NewS have also been growing quite a strong following in Korea.
Many Korean's prefer the Japanese pop groups because:
"The way a Japanese idol matures along with their fans starting from their junior days, is an amazing thing. There are many Korean fans that prefer Japanese idols instead of the Korean idols that debut perfected."
In any regards, Johnny's Entertainment will be opening a Korean office shortly, which seems to be due to Arashi's huge Korean following, approximately 200,000 fans.

I don’t think it would be like korean artists in Japan. Johnny’s boys already too busy in their own country. And sales in Korea not as high as in Japan >_>

If ANY Johnny’s group comes over, even though some of them sound awful live over there (coughNewScoughsorryPichan:<), they’ll sound soooooo much better than the crap that is Korean boybands singing over prerecorded tracks. But I honestly hope that doesn’t happen. There’s a reason I like kpop and there’s a reason I like jpop. I don’t want them to start mixing -__-.

The only upcomming activities for Arashi in Korea is their 4 shows concerts from Nov 1st-2nd at the Olympic Fencing Stadium, Olympic Park, in Seoul. It was orginally supposed to be only 3 shows, but because of the high demand for their concert tickets, they added 1 more show. It was reported that 26,000 tickets were sold out in 1 hour.
If I remember correctly, SM distribute JE’s CD in Korea, so I think the only reason why JE would want to open a Korean office is so that they can distribute their own CD(?) But I don’t really see the point, because sales in Korea is so low~ it’s not like they’re going to make any money from CD sales. Anyways, I doubt Arashi will do any other activities in Korea as they’re super busy already. They already have 3 weekly variety shows and each member has his own actitivities has well like drama, movie, news, and they have an upcoming concert in Shanghai as well.

Yeah I defenitely dont perfer japanese groups over kpop groups. I dunno why, well I think korean groups are better looking (my opinion!) and a lot of the japanese groups i’ve listened to are too poppy? I dunno how to explain it but there’s just a difference I feel when I listen to jpop vs. kpop.

well, i can understand why some koreans like jpop boybands over korean ones. its true korean boybands try and be these perfect little kids from day one of their debut; i can see where it can get annoying/bothersome.

“There are many Korean fans that prefer Japanese idols instead of the Korean idols that debut perfected.“ i totally know what they mean. jap idols are so much more.. innocent? cheerful? i dunno, they just seem a lot more ‘real’ to me & watching them on tv gives you a good feeling, but that’s just imo.
wonder where/who you got that ‘quote’ from though.

this is a blatant attack on korean pride
I HOPE ARASHI AND JOHNNY ENTERTAINMENT FAILS. i just listened to their song “sakura sake” and its really boring
i hope K culture flows OUT of korea, and nothing else flows IN korea

but this would probably help japanese-korean relations

@Kfan, you sound like a typical hypocritical Korean. Korean actors and actresses come to Japan every week to milk as much money as much as they can from their Japanese fans. And then you have practically every Korean acts releasing CDs in Japan because people in their own country down buy CDs. But when the reverse happens, people like you get upset. But the funny thing is, if you go to places like Namdaemun and Dongdaemun in Korea, everyone there speak Japanese and all the stores and restaurants have Japanese signs…So much for Korean nationalism.

I like both of the industries but I prefer Kpop artists over J-pop artists.
I’m kind of sick of Johnny’s boys since… most of them should just stick to acting than singing.
Love them in dramas, but can’t stand their singing or really cheesy dancing skills.

I agree since Johnny’s is a huge and popular entertainment group.
But I thought they would expand to China or somewhere else, rather than South Korea.

@22: totally agreed. #21, you’re an idiot. i honestly hope you’re joking, because if you aren’t then well, i don’t understand how such a moronic person can exist in this world. how do you live with yourself? seriously, what is dbsk, boa, se7en, etc. doing now? ..i’m so overwhelmed with your asshattery that i’m not even gonna build up an argument. it’s blatantly obvious how retardedly hypocritical you are. you’re hilarious, and not in a good way.

one of the dumbest moves ever. Why waste money on somehting that wont be beneficial to you? Korea’s album rates are as low as ever, the only one thats selling a big amount there is TVXQ, all the other artists all sold under 150k according to the current charts. Seriously. Who cares if Arashi got 200k fans in korea? I doubt most of em’s gonna buy the album. -_- Well it doesnt matter if JE bands go to korea and suck at their lives, because in korea you can practiclly lipsync on every stage. In Japan on the other, its looked down upon, and Japans music industry is the worlds second biggest so i see why someone would venture to japan and america (More $$). But korea? Psh. Not much to gain from there. And lots to lose.

It’s a smart move by JE. His boys may not be superior in the likes of singing and dancing in comparison to their SM counterparts, however they do sell a lot more products.
SM entertainment has spent a considerable amount of money to invest in artists like Boa & DBSK to start their careers in Japan. On the other hand, JE has hardly spent a dime in Korea & their group -Arashi- already has 200,000 fans.
DBSK fans shouldn’t be overzealous, more competition in the Kpop industry may mean that DBSK has to work harder. Which may mean better quality songs and more promotion in variety shows - which in turn gives Cassies more opportunities to ogle their idols.
I don’t know if JE will able to generate the album sales in Korea, but I guess when they make a comeback in Japan, after their long activities (?) in Korea, their albums will be selling like hot cakes. This tactic did work for DBSK afterall.

Oooooh, i only like Jun from Arashi cause i watch a lot of is dramas if not all

and i like NEWS especially Massu and Yuya. But thats it. Compared to MY favorite korean boy band, theyre just not as good
but yeah, they probably do sell a lot more cause japanese people tneds to buy CD’s instead of just downloading. I think. -_-

i know exactly what’s going in JE’s mind right now..
it’s payback time!LOL!
TVQX topping Oricon?
I say we give SM ataste of thier own medicine!haha!
if this is true it better be Arashi though,
cause they’re more established in korea than the other JE boys…
they have quite a number of fanbase in Korea already..
goodluck to them if ever!
haven’t done my research yet but are korean’s supportive of foreign artists?

@ rijae00_kpoplover, I wanna know that too. Younha was greatly accepted but then again she was Korean to begin with anyway lol It doesn’t sound like a bad idea, but not a fantastic one either. It has its pros and cons.
The only JE group I listen to / care about is KAT-TUN because they do like, a whole bunch of different stuff and they probably sound the least poppy. Though a few of them look kinda girly…
