Idol Groups Disrespect Moon Hee Jun

Moon Hee Jun KPOP Korean Music

It seems like the drama of this year's MKMF absolutely refuses to disappear. Netizens are buzzing about the various idol groups' reactions when Moon Hee Jun received the MKMF 10th anniversary commemorative award on behalf of the ancestor of boy bands, H.O.T.

Fancams of Moon Hee Jun's acceptance of the award surfaced on the internet recently. The video showed that none of the idol groups stood up other than the elder statesman of the new generation of artists, DBSK. The rest of the idol groups just clapped nonchalantly in their seats. Netizens are angry at the disrespect shown to Moon Hee Jun, because it is an established fact that without H.O.T., these idol groups wouldn't be anywhere near where they are today.

Netizens are split into two camps on this issue, some are saying that idol singers have grown increasingly impolite, that in any other fields people would not dare to be so disrespectful to a sunbae (senior) of 13 years. While others seem to think that the reactions are a bit too intense, and that the idol groups certainly respect their sunbaes, that they just don't show it properly.

What a shame! I feel that this is quite inexcusable, I mean even in Hollywood, when someone like Harrison Ford goes up to the stage, the whole audience stand up. If they can show that much respect in the U.S., they certainly should in Korea. It's not the first time that someone suggested that proper etiquette is disappearing in the KPOP world, does this prove that they're right?

Check out Moon Hee Jun's acceptance speech: (video credit: dreySJ13)

@YBDong: Actually as I said before, there is a video of this, but it’s only focused on the seats around DBSK, so it doesn’t actually show everyone. The video only shows the Wondergirls, Joo, Da Vici, 2PM, 2AM, U-Kiss, and Brown Eyed Girls not standing up, while DBSK does, so people should stop condemning every other idol group besides DBSK.

Big Bang, Suju, and any other idol groups that I’m missing out aren’t in the video.

Also, the netizens are not a single entity. They are made up of millions of people with different views and opinions. Netizens are not hypocrites because with every new “controversy”, it’s not always the same people taking part in the discussion.

There’s a trend i guess.

New idol groups know no respect to seniors.

H.O.T is a legend in the Korean music industry. They are the seniors. And the rookie idol groups show no respect.

LOL, if i were in the audience, i would have stood up too for H.O.T

jason's avatar

the song played while moon hee jun was coming out is called “pray for you” which was on H.O.T 5th album. track number 5. anywayz, as a hardcore H.O.T fan as i or johnny once were, i think the other teeny bopper groups should of stood up and showed some more respect. H.O.T would of stood up if YG went up and got the award for seo tae ji and the boys group. yes, mhj was criticized alot of his music and his appearance, but i believe he is very good at what he do, which is making his own music, has his own style, and has his own image. but he was also part of the group that has revolutionized the korean boy band music industry. for that, like h.o.t or not, all current boy bands should show respect not to just h.o.t but to the older korean music bands and etc. and to all you people calling netizens crazy, shut up, cause you are a netizen also…

How the hell is Wonder Girls not an idol group? Geezzzz.

Anyways even if DBSK is not in the same company, they would’ve stand. And it’s not excuse even if you dont think you’re an idol group to not show respect. It’s respect, people, respect. Man, you kids these days lack proper etiquette.

WTF is wrong with you ppl dissing DBSK for standing up and questioning their motives. My gosh, they stand and clap for everyone. Just cause you’re not a fan of them, you have no rights to talk about them like that. I bet if it’s WG who were seen standing, some of you guys will have nothing to say.

Anyways, if this news is true then this is a “BIG deal” at least to HOT and their fans and the music industry. I think all over asia, showing respect to your elders is the most important thing for a person. Even if you’re not a HOT fan, or if you’re not an idol group, it doesnt take away the fact that you gotta show respect for your seniors.

BTW dont you dare compare HOT with Nsync. Nsync did nothing for the music industry beside riding on the fame of the idol boybands with the Backstreet Boys during their time. HOT was a pioneer of idols for the Hallyu. If you dont know, STFU.

well its just HOT, shinhwa, GOD, even up to DBSG….the feel aroun dthe groups have changed,,,suju was the shanging point era…

after suju came the new wave…like shinee , 2pm 2am…all the new Younger groups…they seem to be lacking respect altogether…

the managements probably have let up over the years,,,less strict..less manners…

HEEJUN and HOT deserve Full and utmost respect from everyone….

and yet still when i watched certain shows and like suju introduced HOT songs/info…and other groups didnt really make any remarks or even admitted to knowing them or looking up to them…they just do their own thing.

Im a full on HOT MOON HEE JUN supporter…and it DID bother me a bit as to the lack of response…but..i dont know <.<

i agree w/both sides of the netizens.
as a krn myself, i don’t think the standing ovation is really established in krn culture(???)
i don’t think the hoobaes are use to the standing ovation kind of thing.  & i’m pretty sure they all looked up to h.o.t., since they grew up w/their music (as well as s.e.s, shinhwa, sechkies, finkl, etc.).  they’re just young.  if the older singers were there (shinhwa, g.o.d, etc.) i’m pretty sure they would’ve stood up for them, since they’ve been in the biz for a long time.  these new idols are kids- they’re still newbies.

DBSK stood up because they RESPECT H.O.T. I remember Junsu saying that he was a huge fan of H.O.T. and JJ once got in a fight because he was standing up for H.O.T. also I think JJ once said he was in the official fan club. All the other idol groups should be like DBSK, respecting their elders. SHINEE is doing well though, because they look up to DBSK And DBSK are good idols for SHINEE because DBSK is always polite, humble and hardworking

What i dont get is when DBSK received their awards, all of the idol groups stood up..im sure most of you have watched it.. Everyone was like bowing like crazy to Dong Bang like WG during the end of the awards..

does this mean that idol groups choose the sunbae to respect ? i dunow.. as long as they respect Dong bang,,i have no problem. but not standing to the legends like HOT, is a no-no..for seniority and formality’s sake..

..G.O.D..Shinhwa..H.O.T..TVXQ..

the rest has yet to prove themselves to be more than ‘idol’ groups to be l0oked up to..

no avatar

Part of me thinks that it’s wrong for the current idol groups are disrespectful for not giving moon hee jun a standing ovation. H.O.T is no doubt a legend. But part of me tolerates them because the idol groups that are present there probably feels no attachment towards H.O.T. Like WG, BB, 2PM and 2AM are considered quite new and they perhaps don’t really listen to H.O.T. BB is always praising Seo Tai Ji. I have to give props to DBSK though. I don’t know if it’s because they’ve been in the business longer but I understand how they’ve gotten this far. They’re polite and they always look so enthusiastic when some artists perform. I hate it when people look stoned during a performance. The least you can do is bob your head along to appreciate the effort that the artists have put in for the performances. I notice that a lot of artists sitting down just stared. Maybe that’s why DBSK gets so much camera time.

One thing I liked about DBSG was the fact that throughout their 5 years of being in the entertainment business, they never once let their image crumble. They were always aware of what they do at all times. They do what they were created to do, which was to sing, dance, and perform.

The breakdown of the entertainment business and this “trend” of respect started with the newer groups. I’m a fan of most of the newer idol groups, such as BB and WG. However, I honestly think that the period before these newer groups were create had much more respect for each other. While I love how these new groups put a new edge on the korean music industry, I definitely don’t love the disrespect that comes with it.

Even though I’m a fan of a lot of the groups today, I can honestly say that DBSK are not competitors. DBSK are sunbaes to these newer generations just as H.O.T were seniors to DBSK. Just as a lot of the artists and programs say, a lot of idol groups look up to DBSK because, taking all bias aside, they have accomplished things that a lot of artists dream of accomplishing. Just like H.O.T opened the doors for all of these idol groups, DBSK took part in opening the doors even greater across Asia. This is why I’m glad that DBSK are seen as role models and stood up. While they are still seen as part of the new generation, they still retain elements of past generation they debuted in.

i have to agree with a lot of the comments here. i think it’s completely disrespectful of those artists that weren’t standing, if that is truly the case. but a part of me wants to believe that they were standing, though not as long as dbsk probably was. i don’t think ALL the new groups are disrespectful… i’d bet an arm and a leg that if snsd, sj and shinee were in the audience as well, they’d all be standing alongside dbsk. with sm, as long as one group is standing, they’ll all be standing. so maybe other management groups just need someone to lead them by… i don’t know, i’m kind of getting off topic.

my original reason for wanting to comment is to say that this is just another sign that another era in kpop has come. i agree. the last of the older generation in kpop was super junior and idol groups who debuted after that are literally KIDS in the business. So long as you have a 90er in the group, you’re kids. so learn some respect.

i think if its a commemorative award for lifetime achievements or something that really stands out and has hugely affected kpop or anything else in entertainment, ppl should stand and applaud them. if its a reg song of the year award then fine, don’t stand but i think it SHOULD be intuitive to stand for these types of achievement awards.

@ secret… Super Junior DID NOT attend this year’s MKMF and snsd weren’t there either!

no avatar

there is no such thing as showing too much respect to your sunbaes or your elders. idiots, this is korean culture… asian culture actually. if there is someone who’s older than you or debuted earlier than you did in the industry, it is common sense that you show respect to them. and seriously, this is an award for H.O.T. people, not for some noobs who debuted with trashy kpop music. it may seem like netizens are overreacting, but seriously, i don’t blame them.

no avatar

why are people making up reasons as to why dbsk got up? its not about being on the same label or about yunho making them stand up. it’s about showing respect for a band they all truly like and just becuase they’re respectful. just read anyone’s thought’s on dbsk. sbs or mbc pd’s even. they ALL say tat dbsk is one of the most respectful people they’ve ever met. which is one of the reasons everyone loves them. no matter how popular they are, they still manage to be humble and respectful.

as for netizens being angry, it’s NOT stupid. you’re talking about a country wherein age and seniority is everything and where being respectful is of the utmost importance. so for these ‘idols’ to not get up, is like a slap in the face for HOT fans becuase lets admit it. without HOT, there wouldn’t be a these idol groups. they paved the way for them like boa paved the way for kpop stars in japan. also, the fact that everyone stands up for talentless groups, i wont name names, but doesn’t stand up for the one that actually counts is the perfect WTF?! moment. or are they all just standing becuase they know the camera’s will be pointing?

idols these days need to get off their high horse and learn some manners, so they can be role models and not just ‘trends’ that will soon die out when they stop having catchy music

^we’re not calling them heroes for standing up, cause it is expected since it’s respectful to do so towards seniors in the industry. However, the fact that they were the only ones who did while the other idol groups did not shows that even though they are more established as artists, they remain humble. Which is a far cry from many other idol groups who i will not name.

so i’ve watched the vid someone posted earlier, and it’s TRUE… the only one who really stood up was DBSK while the others were comfortably sat on their seats. i dunno if they even gave a damn to Hee Jun’s speech at all, coz it’s too blurry. DBSK gave a standing ovation in the end of the speech and I think it’s really appropriate. if you don’t believe me then watch it for yourself… it’s quite sad, though =(

Well, DBSK is well-known for their respectful and polite manner. They even bring this manner into Japan. I read somewhere a Japanese MC said that they’re very polite. Aah, Koreans should be proud of them….

Well i dun know if they did or didn’t stand or their reasons, but people weren’t expecting him to be there that night, probably it was the shock, i dun know. But i did see a lot of the idol groups and member really enjoying the performance and like staring in awe, so maybe it was the shock, like i said i din’t notice i was too busy screamin and cheering, lmao. As for Hee Jun and H.O.T, every idol group today knows about them, one cause they’re always mentioned in kpop ang most idol groups are compared to H.O.T, as for Hee Jun’s popularity, he wasn’t as popular as when he was in H.O.T and many netizens gave him a hard time for doing rock music, but he still manage to mantain a good amount of popularity. I’m not going over board to defend anyone, but i think that even if you don’t like him, people shouldn’t put him down because of it, as of last year his popularity did increase, as well as after Hollywood Bowl. I won’t make any more comments on wether the new idol groups were disrespectful or not, if they were, that’s their business. On happier notes…i did enjoy Yuhno fanboying…lmao.

There is such a double standard here, if it were SNSD who were the ones that didn’t stand up, almost everyone would be having a field day full of hate msgs. Basically, as long as you’re not SNSD go ahead and be dispectful cuhs no one’s gonna give you shit for it. Seriously, it doesn’t matter whether or not the artists in the audience had an attachment to HOT or not. It’s impossible for them as KPOP artists not to know what HOT created for KPOP and idol groups. Age and not being around the HOT days is a lame excuse. HOT is so lengendary, you would have to be living under a rock in Korea to not know who the hell they are! It’s just boggles my mind beyound belief that the artists in the audience didn’t get up even after seeing DBSK get up. It’s like hello? What are you thinking?! The award presented wasn’t even a small everyday award either, but it was an anniv. award to recognize the impact HOT has made to KPOP. I don’t understand why they got up for other artists for other smaller awards, but not for MHJ who was there on behalf of the entire HOT. Some of you obviously don’t understand the Korean culture here or are just in denial because your artist took part in the act. As for DBSK, as a non fan I still give them props. They’re a hella polite group of boys.

no avatar

I forgot to add that for once, Korean netizens actually brought up a good point to discuss. And it’s not only netizens either, but there were actually media outlets that talked about the same thing. Btw, when some of you guys criticize “netizens” you might want to be specific and say “Korean netizens” or something because you know you’re actually a netizen yourself rofl.
