Do you think “East of Eden” will succeed?

Opinions are divided on whether the big-budget drama "East of Eden", starring the hot hot Song Seung-Hun, eye-candy worthy Dennis Oh and others (hahahaha), has what it takes to be the next Winter Sonata? (in terms of Hallyu power, anyway)
The extremely anticipated and hyped drama finally aired on the 25th, in celebration of MBC's 47th anniversary. Viewers are not shy about listing their complaints. After the broadcast, a special aired which contained an introduction of characters, footage of filming the cast in Hong Kong, making of the film, NG (bloopers) reels, views of the open set, etc., viewers spammed the message boards on the homepage. They complained that the special was more like a DVD special feature, and then they complained that there was no reason to air a special - netizens left comments like "I don't see why they needed to broadcast a special", "I wanted to see the actual drama, not a special", "The special was a waste of time", blah blah blah.
On the other end of the spectrum, they also left remarks like "It's like a big-budget movie, not a drama", "It looks like a fun drama will come out after a long time", "I feel like I've waited so long for this," etc. Jeez.
For those of you unfamiliar with the plot, basically, it's about a man (played by Song Seung Hun) who, as a teenager, witnesses his father being murdered. He swears to seek revenge on his father's killer... But in truth, his own younger brother, who grew up to become a prosecutor and promised to help his 'brother' seek revenge, was switched with his father's killer's son at birth. (Man, can Korean dramas stop this whole switched-at-birth thing?? It rarely even happens in real life!) OMG, they're not brothers!!! What will Song Seung-Hun the main character do when he finds out the brother that was beside him all these years was actually the son of his mortal enemy?
Honestly, I think this sounds way too typical, with a few 'twists'. 50 episodes are already 30 episodes too long. I can already imagine the dragged-out crying scenes, emotional outbursts and OF COURSE, the flashbacks. In a nutshell, there are skyrocketing expectations for this drama due to Song Seung-Hun its 'stellar' cast and the wasted $25 million that could've helped feed hungry children in North Korea big budget. Do you guys think East of Eden has what it takes to succeed and break Korea's succession of relatively boring and unsuccessful dramas?

WOOOW, i had to read that plot line about 10 times before i got it lol. I can see it doing well coz of Dennis Oh, but seriously the media needs to stop creating a hype because it will only make peoples expect more.

lol i’ve been waiting for a long time. any drama song seung hoon is in it will automatically be a hit. yea the storyline is so overrated and repeated but hey thats what makes it addicting.

Your articles have great content, but I do wish you’d read over them and edit. They always seem to be full of grammatical and spelling errors. Sorry if this sounds criticizing, but without those little mistakes, your articles would be an awesome read. :]
And in response to the poll, if they present this cliche theme well, who knows what will happen?

I still dont know why Winter Sonata was so popular… its the SLOWEST damn love story ever even on kdrama standards. Im still gonna watch it regardless.

Nope. All hype. The storyline is too, ‘been there done that 100 times’. The only thing that’s gonna prop this puppy up is the eye candy. People swooning over how good looking they are, not the plot or the acting for that matter.
But then again, I’ve consistently noticed that Korea has low standards, because the ones they call ‘good actors’, with the exception of Song Kang-Ho, a lot of times I’m left scratching my head and saying,‘oh really?‘

I don’t know. I hope it is. They used so much money and had such a good cast that if it sucked, it’d be suchhhh a waste.
Agreed with “nikeg”.
I watched one episode of Winter Sonata,
and maybe it was Bae Yongjoon or Choi Jiwoo’s hair cut,
but I’ve vowed to never watch the whole thing.
And yeah, I’d still watch this drama anyways.

lol. Maybe it’ll do well in Japan and be popular, like Winter Sonata. WS was never popular until it got popular in Japan.

^that’s true…
I never really like Winter Sonata, I never see the hype in that drama but I could understand why Japanese ahjummas like it…I think Summer Scent was better not because of SSH, I didn’t even like SSH at first…and it’s SSH, it might become a bit draggy but I think it will be good…Just SSH being there, it’s more than enough…It felt like I haven’t seen him for years…I hope for it success! It has good and great actors in it…

Well I’m sorry but I don’t think it will succeed just because people are anticipating and expecting so much of it, hate it when they make you do it.
I’d prefer a drama that surprises me and turns out to be great than a high promoted one that’s not even half of what I expected.
So basically it could be good but not as good as people are expecting it to be.

I like this writer, she’s cool and writes the long ones. =D
I personally chose maybe since you can never know. It could become underrated(pshhhh), overrated(seems like it), or just right(like Winter Sonata, IMO). The story is so so since so many dramas have done it before.
and yea, Winter Sonata was pretty slow but i still liked it i guess but that’s the last really slow drama i watch XD I remember being addicted to it on AZN Television hahaha oh those days…lol.

#12, when I first read the title a while back, I thought of John Steinbeck, as well. Thank God they’re not doing it, because I’m certain that it’d be butchered beyond belief!

I think for it to really succeed I think the audience is going to have to look more towards the actors and not so much the storyline…

Haha, I really do appreciate the constructive criticism (and even the senseless criticism, cuz it’s funny).
SSH <3 Dennis Oh <3 But I dunno if I’d watch 50 episodes just for them. -_- I put Fail. Hehe.

the plot doesn’t fail the drama… it’s the bad acting that fails a drama. i think this drama can bring up its own color and do well. [= i just can’t imagine lee yeon hee playing a character like that… O_o

Im definitely not gonna watch this since im not that much of a korean drama-addict anyway but I think it’ll do well. And your right about flash backs -___- it happens a lot in korean soaps, gets sooooo tiring and annoying :/
and i like your articles! keep ‘em coming 8D

agree @kisstherain…though plot does a lot to keep the interest of the viewers, it doesn’t really weight as much. Sometimes, even though how great the plot is if the actors are bad, then it won’t get anywhere. It’s like a great composer + the worst singer…as long as there are good acting and such…For example Summer Scent, I don’t think the plot is that good, it’s predictable and kind of draggy in the middle. However, what I like about it is the sceneries, music, especially music, it has my favorite serenade in it. The flowers, plus it didn’t start in their childhood memories, it’s not too dramatic either. It’s cute from the start and then get melodramatic.
But for East Of Eden, I can tell it will be very dramatic, it starts from their childhood memories and such. But like what I said earlier SSH is enough for me to watch out for maybe 1-20 episodes, I just don’t know how it will go…
