Did they really? Celebrity crimes

We see them on TV. They are handsome, witty and talented. But just like us, they're humans and humans naturally make mistakes. Recently Kang In of Super Junior was slammed by Netizens for his involvement in a bar brawl, but the truth is that many celebrities' crimes have received less media coverage than it would have. Let's talk about some of the bigger "mistakes" made by Korean celebrities that seem to have been forgotten in time.

Actor and singer Ryu Si Won was nicknamed "Ryucifer" (Ryu+Lucifer) because he killed a person back in 1995; he accidentally knocked down a pedestrian while he was driving his Le Mans late at night. He was investigated but did not get charged against any crimes as he made a settlement with the victim's family, but the tag of a murderer still follows him. Ryu is an amateur car racer and still enjoys his hobby to this date, which only fuels people's accusations against him.

Actor and comedian Jo Hyung Ki who frequents variety shows these days with his image as a funny old man is known as "Killer Jo" because of the crime he committed back in 1991. He killed a woman in her 30s while driving under the influence of alcohol. What makes his case much more serious than it already is, is the fact that he took the dead body and dumped it somewhere else in an attempt to conceal his crime - ironically, he was caught red handed because he fell asleep in the car right beside where he hid the body. He served one year before being released, and his case is one of the landmark cases that law students come across in their studies as a drunk driving murderer being released after one year which remains highly controversial till this day. He began appearing in dramas right after he was released.

Actor and singer Lee Hyun Woo gained notoriety as "Grand Hyun Woo" (as in he achieved the Grand Slam of crimes) for various controversies he was involved in - drug use, drunk driving without a license, draft dodging, and to top it all off, appearing in a commercial for a loan sharking company (which is seen as a morally questionable act to Koreans). Thanks to his affluent background, he was not held back with his career and continues to frequent the screens to this date. Soon after being arrested with drunk driving without a license, he was selected as model for Hyundai's new minivan.

Numerous actors and models have gotten arrested for drug use earlier this year. The most notable one was Joo Ji Hoon, who famously told the judge "if you forgive me, I will join the army" - this comment angered the public as military service is a duty for all Korean males and he made it sound as if he was going to serve in the army just to improve his image. Many celebrities have been arrested for drug use in the past, including singer Lee Seung Chul, comedian Shin Dong Yup, singer Psy, and ex-Coyote Kim Koo who have all been charged for use of marijuana.

Shin Dong Yup

The Korean entertainment industry has been plagued with numerous incidents this year. Let's hope that our favorite entertainers learn from the mistakes of their seniors and not get themselves into handcuffs.

CLARIFICATION!!!

Tiger JK wasn’t actually guilty of the meth use but other rappers who were caught using handed him over to the police and accused him of smoking and dealing to lighten their sentences. He was wrongfully jailed despite a lack of evidence.

Holy crap. Jo Hyungki’s story is really shocking. He was drunk driving, killed a person, AND tried to hide her body and he only got ONE freaking year in prison?! That doesn’t make any logical sense at all. I can’t even begin to imagine how the victim’s family must feel.. especially when they come across his face on TV..

Ryu Shiwon’s story is ridiculous too. I can’t believe he killed someone (accident or not) and wasn’t punished for it. What kind of settlement could the victim’s family possibly agree to? Money!? -_-

ayamefan13's avatar

Thanks for informing us. Because I was pretty shocked reading about Ryu Shiwon just now. I had NO idea. Pretty surprising. I did keep up with the Joo Ji Hoon story though. But I think the reactions would be different in America than it is in Korea.

loveholic's avatar

This is frankly very disturbing.

Its amazing the hypocrisy and legal bullcrap that korea deals out.  Its like as long as you were drunk or a man, you can get away with anything.  Guy rapes an 8 year old to the point where doctors had to remove her anus and the guy only gets 12 years which he appealed because he said it was too harsh.  Man rapes his handicapped granddaughter for years and years but the courts say its okay since she doesn’t have any other family to take care of her. You murder your entire family but its okay because you were in debt.  WTF KOREA!  http://koreabeat.com/?p=10734#comments

  THEY ARE SO   HYPOCRITICAL

iluvCHOKYUHYUN's avatar

i never knew shin dong yup was arrested for drugs! i hope this would lessen now :(

MarshaBarsha's avatar

AH! wow some of these stories are CRAZY, damn i didn’t know korean celebrities had it like that….makes our american celebrities look like saints lol, all we have that i can think of with the murdering thing is OJ Simpson
@4: Yeah, that’s true this IS so much worse then what jay did but this is life i guess….never makes sense T.T
</3

love 'em's avatar

ouch..that’s a lot…

Fadexoxo's avatar

ok @ 19 stop comparing AMERICA and KOREA!!!!! we live on to different sides of the planet, of course things are gonna be different but killing i think is universal!!! even tho we probably see more killings than you doesn’t mean we think he should have gotten less of a sentence….. damn! -___-

purplestar23's avatar

Woahhh. Why did they get such a short amount of time to pay for what they have done?! The power of their career. It’s scary.

no avatar

i don’t think these ppl will like u to bring this up again lol
@4 i agree
life is so not fair

byewaney's avatar

WOAHH~~~~killing (accidental or not), drunk driving and drug abuse and they didn’t get punished or condemned for it?And they say Jaebeom is a “disgrace”?
Korean never fail to amaze me. I guess this is how CIVILIZED they are.
I respect their love and loyalty for their country and culture but somehow when it comes to humanity and respect for other people~~~~Korean just don’t have much of that.
Sorry to all Koreans, I’m sure not all of you are like that since I have Koreans friends who are very good people but too bad most of you are like that.

sho0rty's avatar

Shin Dong Yup ?! :O Shocked

zero's avatar

OMG. If this is true I can’t believe Jo Hyung Ki still have the guts to show his face on TV. I can’t see him the same way again. Every time I’ll see his face on starking I’ll think of him as a murderer. My god, what is up with that? He even tried to hide the body!! That is just plain sick. Drunk driving and irresponsibility results to the death of innocent people. He just served for a year. Thats just great.
The same with Ryu Siwon, he wasn’t even punished. That’s so hypocritical, some of the guys in these article accidentally killed people due to their irresponsibility and they were freed from their sentence. While the netizens criticized Chansung of 2PM for throwing some trash and mortify Jay just because of some old comment. Some world we live in.

Summer Time!'s avatar

@4 -> seriously stop bringing him into almost everything! Korea doesn’t evolve around him but the second one is so shocking! Only a YEAR?! He was caught red freaking handed! tsk tsk South Korea.

ikolp's avatar

holy crap… i didnt know that about jo hyung ki!
he’s always on tv talking about that erotic movie he did.
he built up that really good image by being the good husband to his wife and i liked him for it…
he looks so different now…

H0SH1's avatar

wtf?! only 1 year? that’s ridiculous..
in north america, the emprissonement can go up to 7 years and above..

melany21's avatar

It’s probably not right but i’m actually comparing this to jay’s case.. and I have the following question ; why the hell is he back to America, why the hell is he not forgiven ? I really don’t get it probably never will..
all humans make mistakes, nothing you can do about it. Only with some cases above I totally agree with people ; what is that 1 year ? WTH .. you’ve killed someone, like never going to come back , and you get 1 year ?????

Kurt's avatar

I believe in second chances..but poor families that lost a family member..

JooRinRin's avatar

Shin Dong Yup and marijuana?!
Jesus, I never thought that the celeb’s would be able to get back on their feet after murdering someone.

salut's avatar

wow..some cases are quite shocking. never heard of the stories before
@4 completely agree with you
so some people can’t forgive Jay for saying sth bad about koreans and their country but killing their own people is ok? damn… what’s wrong with them seriously =\
