Choi Jin Shil’s Grave Robber Caught!
After a false alarm, the police investigation team in charge of the case of Choi Jin Shil's stolen ashes, revealed on 26th August, that they have apprehended a 41 year old suspect, Park, at his Daegu home just after midnight, a few hours ago.
From CCTV footage released by the police earlier, the suspect had surveyed the burial site between 1 - 2nd August, before committing the crime between 4 - 5th August. The police got a breakthrough in their investigations after they ran a check on a string of phonecalls made near Choi Jin Shil's burial site, against a lead from someone who mentioned that he saw someone similar in stature near his Daegu home. They zeroed in on a possible suspect on the morning of 25th and managed to apprehend him deep in the night. They are sure that they got the right man after finding the hammer (used to smash Choi Jin Shil's tombstone), same outfit, etc.
Besides the suspect, the police also recovered the urn and Choi Jin Shil's ashes. Unlike what many expected, the urn wasn't really lost or anything. But the urn was a bit destroyed, and the suspect had transported the ashes into another container. It's not clear right now, what the suspect's motive was behind stealing Choi Jin Shil's ashes.
But police did reveal that from the overnight interrogation attempts, the suspect had revealed, "Choi Jin Shil appeared in my dreams, asking me to take her ashes out, so I did it", "Choi Jin Shil took control of my body", hinting that perhaps he is of unsound mind. Police are not ruling out the possibility that he could be faking to escape a harsh sentence.
The police have also revealed that even though it's not possible to conduct DNA tests on the ashes now due to the high temperatures during cremation, they will try to use other methods to verify that it belongs to the late Choi Jin Shil before closing the chapter.
