Big Bang shows off their Japanese Skills on MTV VMA Japan

BoA wasn't the only Korean artist in attendance at MTV VMA Japan on 30th May, Korean group Big Bang was there as well. They weren't there just for the festivities however, they actually had a role to play.

Big Bang was introduced as "Guest Celebrities" and showed off their Japanese and English linguistic skills for around 30 seconds before introducing Katy Perry. I can't really say much about their Japanese, because I don't know Japanese, but their English seemed pretty good. It seems like G-Dragon is getting better with the accent. Thanks to justine for the tip!

In other news, TVXQ / DBSK / Tohoshinki who weren't in attendance (because of their concerts) was nominated for the Best Group Video Award but unfortunately they didn't win. EXILE actually won the award, better luck next time boys.

They need to stay in Japan to improve their Japanese. I had to listen to it twice to understand them.

There was no way EXILE was going to lose lol.

they’re not cute

It’s horrendous

@51 When THSK debut in Japan their Japanese weren’t that good either. They live in Japan long enough to master the language compare to BB who stay for only… i dunno..2-3 months a year perhaps..

As a Japanese speaker, I must say their Japanese are LOLable…but it was fun to watch XD

There’s no such thing as a “black” style. If there is such a thing, your DBSK is wanna be white since the bboy trend was not made by asians.

SeungRi’s Japanese is a little broken…and it’s still pretty simple. But Japanese and Korean have really similar grammar so I guess it’s easier for them.

Riku aka# 54? you’re a fucking idiot. They’re not wannabe blacks, and even if they were, what’s so horrendous about it? Are you still so ancient that black people still ‘horrify’ you? And like someone said, if Big Bang are wannabe blacks then DBSK are wannabe whites…but I guess it’s okay to want to be white.

their Japanese has this werid accent but it’s fine I guess! it’s hard to speak without an accent anyway~

I find it impressive that most of the k-pop artists either know Japanese or Mandarin. I have trouble with those languages. I think I speak French better than I can butcher Mandarin. :DD

i don’t know why ppl expect them to have good japanese already. they’re barely starting to focus in japan, give them time.  it took boa and dbsk a few years to get a good handle of japanese.  it’s never easy for anybody to learn a different language. and of course they’ll always have an accent since they’re native korean.  my grandfather moved to california from china when he was 22years old, and he still has some accent.

@64

I agree. Blacks and Whites have started their own trend. Asians haven’t unless you count their old traditional music with their instruments. That’s what they started and they now follow trends that are set by other races.

I don’t like how GD split english here and there in his first public japanese show. I prefer them to speak in Korea (as they are representative from korea) than speaking english. The audience is japanese, they are korean, and although they are introducing an american artist, they can just say it in english at the end of the speech.
Japan is as bad (or as best, you choose) as korea in term of valuing their culture. All artist (who is mix or foreigner like Jero, THSK) win the japanese public by showing their high interest in Japanese culture and show their willingness to accept it. Learn to lower your head GD, learn it!!!!
Daesung is such a sweet heart ^^

As much as I like Big Bang, it’s a good thing that they didn’t perform at the MTV VMAJ. It would not have been in their favor. They need to seriously improve their language skills (Japanese and English) to perform in front of a Japanese and/or English-speaking audience to gain credibility.

Gd sounded like a fool spitting out random phrases.
Daesung, Taeyang, and Top looked good.
I’m pretty sure Taeyang has th best japanese out the group for those who were asking.

For the people who asked why Katy Perry was there MTV VMAJ is pretty huge. They always have foreign artists perform including Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, etc.
Japan is either the 2nd or 3rd largest music market in the world so yea…....

maryclaude's avatar

with practice i’m sure they’ll be better in japanese. smile
though… i didn’t like g-dragon english- it’s too random D: i normally like g-dragon the best but he seriously looks like a girl here >_< i didn’t know who katy perry was so i thought g-dragon is katy perry from the pic haha XD *fail*

omg big bang roxz >-<

jillybean's avatar

Their Japanese was a bit…iffy, but DBSK took a little while to master the language as well, so I’m sure it’ll be the same for Big Bang. They should study it during their spare time too like DBSK did smile

The boys are more talented than most Jpop groups out there, that’s for sure…

no avatar

@96
You compare them with some JE idol bands only, right? Japan has lots of quality JPop groups that master in singing and some can compose real music, not just sampling.  Even with JE idol boybands, I’m not sure if BB is really better, or just a hype.

The best thing is that any group don’t have to be no.1, 2, or 3 to be recognize and successful because japanese market is large. As long as they have a good quality to offer, they can be successful finally.

Brooke's avatar

about their Japanese, no comments here. I thk GD’s trying-to-be-American-accent English might sounds ok for Asian audiences but a little bit come out of no where for native speakers. Anyway we dont need to be so harsh on this, theyre still young and with all the potential. they’ll getting better

musicislove's avatar

good japanese? bad japanese? i’m just glad they are even speaking japanese (that japanese album left me with close to no hope!)
the english is getting there. progress is always good. =)
