Big Bang shows off their Japanese Skills on MTV VMA Japan

BoA wasn't the only Korean artist in attendance at MTV VMA Japan on 30th May, Korean group Big Bang was there as well. They weren't there just for the festivities however, they actually had a role to play.

Big Bang was introduced as "Guest Celebrities" and showed off their Japanese and English linguistic skills for around 30 seconds before introducing Katy Perry. I can't really say much about their Japanese, because I don't know Japanese, but their English seemed pretty good. It seems like G-Dragon is getting better with the accent. Thanks to justine for the tip!

In other news, TVXQ / DBSK / Tohoshinki who weren't in attendance (because of their concerts) was nominated for the Best Group Video Award but unfortunately they didn't win. EXILE actually won the award, better luck next time boys.

yikes, sounds annoying. as one of their fans, i’m embarrassed. trying too hard to look COOL, in the end turned over-acting and look smug, especially GD. props to seungri though, at least he acted normally and his jap is better than the others’ (and yea, full sentence, not random words here and there). i dunno what clouded people’s brain saying their english/jap cute…. reality check: in both languages, they FAILED. that’s the fact. and those who said they should perform in mtv vmaj, honestly, what do you think this event is? VIP fanclub event? jeez… their role here is too insignificant to perform in the awards.

He doesnt have to try to be cool unlike some of the others. he just is. why do some have to act gangster? it’s embarassing to watch. T_T

i’m not bashing
but what did he mean by “and fresh I love it”
their english is getting better (actually just gd’s cuz i haven’t seen enough of the other’s english) , but it’s still really awkward

I don’t speak Japanese, but sounded like Japanese to me. AHA as for GD, just spitting a bunch of rap sayings.. “ARE YOU READY?” “I CAN’T HEAR YOU” Boy, you can do better than that.

I think people need to remember that Korean is the boys’ first language. And whatever other language they’re speaking, be it Japanese, English or some obscure tribal language, it always takes a lot of hard work and effort to pull it off. I understand that people have high expectations of them, but they aren’t miracle workers. They aren’t linguists, they’re singers and entertainers. Speaking in another language to target another audience is something extra that they’re doing, and something that we should welcome and support. It’s not perfect, and I’m Japanese myself. But I’m not going to laugh at their little mistakes, because I know how hard it must be for them to be speaking in a different language that they did not grow up with, and something that they did not learn in school.

I’d say that if any of those critics out there were to be put up on stage in front of an international audience and other celebrities, asked to speak in a different language that you have barely mastered while at the same time, keeping your cool and remembering your lines…probably only one percent of these critics can do it.

I don’t like Big Bang, and I hate it when bands venture out to other markets because many markets are just not receptive to other people. So when they do have the courage to do it, I have only admiration for them because it can’t be easy.

I totally agree with Taleeya @ 114…..These boys have enough courage to be able to stand in front of those foreign audiences who may barely know them…. Whether you like or dislike them, at least they have tried their best as another K singers to venture on Japanese market like Boa,Rain,Seven,THSK,SS501,F.T.Island etc.  Let just wait and see how will they be moving on. Some may pray from bottom of their heart for them but yet some may curse to death.
....Btw acting cool???  I have been seeing the boys around since debut and this is simply their style. They even looked more gangster when were they first debut o.0
And for GD random English. ^^  It’s really no surprise for GD. HaHa…Probably they go along well with what other members saying in JAP though.

have enough courage? they’re guest celebrities, they’re not there because they “have enough courage” to be there. wtf.

sure we don’t expect them to speak very fluent japanese and english, but this was embarrassing. especially g-dragon, his english is horrible. if you’re gonna speak a different language, don’t speak random crap like g-dragon did.

when they speak english it sounds like Spanish to me. I can understand the words but don’t know what actually they are talking about. Even though, bigbang’s pronunciation is the best compare to other teen pop groups(except Seung Ri)

Why r they in Japan???? Thought they were coming to America? Getting really famous in japan will be really hard.  They minus will just go straight to the U.S.  If they brush up on their english, change the name “big bang”, & work with good producers, they can will sell more cds and be more famous.  In the U.S. all you need to get popular & sell cds is to release hit songs. i think the U.S. is more open now, even for asians to debut.  I mean even boa got on the billboards. .... they should just go straight to U..S.

Yes Miranda@122 “I simply said HAVE ENOUGH COURAGE”  Who’s not ??  Mind
you dare to stand in front of a lot of FORIEGN audiences who barely care to know you…..And yes for the fact that this award show is exceptionally the second biggest MTV award to the rest of the world.  Dont you think it’s just huge for these boys??
They could be freaked out if they would have thought that what if WE werent capable of BEING there?????  At least I admire what they’re trying to do nevertheless.

GD’s throwing random english. Well well well….there’re always two sides of the coin. Some just lovin’it.  And yet some just….....huhuhu

@131: i hv no problem with you admiring them for what they did, whatever, that’s your opinion. but srsly, freaked out, wtf? they MUST NOT freak out if they want to venture to jap market, so courage is not an issue here. i don’t understand the logic: so just because they have enough courage, it’s okay for them to do something embarrassing? have you ever thought about what those foreigners thought of them when they were over-acting like that? they might dislike them, not-so-good first impression. one more: don’t compare them to people who are non-public figures; they (ie the non-public figures, not bb) don’t need courage at all as they’re not required to stand in front of “a lot of FOREIGN audiences who barely care to know”.

Oh Well…They’re just human…as us…Right?
And what i meant to say on my previous comment was only that if any of you : public figures or non- public figures were asked to be on spotlight as significant as them. e.g for ordinary ones..let’s say giving a speech in front of class or being in front of a lot attention for whatever you’re doing in daily life… It’s simply not easy. It take some guts for sure. That’s way it meant to be for courage. Got my logic yet?  And again for their “over-acting / embarrassing issue you’re saying ”  I may repeat…ones just so much in love for their appearance on stage that night…...while other esp haters may find it loahing.
....For ME I found nothing wrong at all. Did they act discourteous or saying something rude?? Hell no.  Why embarrassing? I dont get it.
