Big Bang KPOP Korean Music

Not mine exactly, but yours if you've ever purchased their albums, attended their concerts, or even downloaded their ringtones. Legally, of course.

YG Entertainment recently disclosed that Big Bang made a whopping 36,000,000,000 won in 2008, or around 24.5 million US Dollars, making them one of the most profitable groups in Korea. Yep, count the zeros, that is a lot of money! $_$

A good chunk of their income comes from concerts. Their two concerts in Japan, one in Thailand, and the three months of touring in Korea made them more than 5,000,000,000 won (around 3.43 million). Their album and mini-albums totalled 4,000,000,000 won (around 2.72 million). Other than that, being spokesmen and doing advertising for eight top Korean brands also contributed to a big chunk of that cool 24.5 million.

That does sound like a lot of money, but when you consider the fact that there are five members, and the artists themselves normally only receive 20% of the total profit, that 24.5 million quickly disintegrates into pocket change. By rough calculations, each of the members will only receive 1,000,000,000 won, or around 680,000 US dollars. G-Dragon, who is in charge of composing as well as some aspects of production will receive a bit more than the others... Tae Yang as well, because of his solo efforts. But you also can't forget about the taxes.

It's no secret that Korean boy bands don't make much after their management / company take away the bigger share (upwards of 80%). There were reports that Lee Soo Man gave H.O.T. only 1 cent per album sale... which was the main reason they broke up. But I really feel that they deserve more, since they probably have to work way more than the average person and endure all the other negative aspects of being a star, loss of privacy and such. Oh well, at least Big Bang members are not splitting it 13 ways like the Super Junior boys (with a cheap Lee Soo Man to boot). Now that is no kind of life. Looking at it this way, being a top idol really doesn't get you much. Then again in the big perspective, making a mid to high 6 figure sum before you enter college isn't that bad at all.

Do Korean actors get paid more?
It’s insane that they make so much, yet get so little.

so you’re popular but not rich
LOLOL that sucks
i’d rather have a respectable job and be rich than be an entertainer and not be rich
after all, big bang, super junior, etc are all equivalent to the courtesans and jesters and performers in a king’s court
kekeke….
poor big bang though

Korea really needs more of a concert culture. Album sales really don’t amount to much in terms of profit for a band. Bands in America do huge sweeping tours around the entire country for months at a time, yet Koreans only do about 2 or 3 at a time, and that’s only after you become really famous. That’s why Korean musicians make so little money. Concerts are where the real money is.

chubbiebunnie how do you know they only get 20%?did you talk to them or YG?hating on bigbang like always.

Actors make more because Entertainment companies like SM and YG train their singers and pay for their stuff and everything. Actors just act. If their managers had to train them then they’d have to pay their managers as well.

not only that they don’t receive all that amount. we should consider how much they needa work to make it up to that big number ... im sure they cant wait for their vacation in america (well apart from gdragon who needs to focus on his solo)

no avatar

honestly, sometimes i don’t really envy them. I guess they make a decent amount, but for the amount of work they do, and all the crap they get from the media, the fans and such. and also all this about over-exhaustion, that’s not good for their long term health… but i guess there are also good respects like receiving all those gifts from fans, and their job is a lot more fun than what most people have… so. yeah, i guess you have to take the good with the bad.

I do agree that they receive a small share but you have to think of all the people that have to be paid for the production of the album, vocal and dancing instructors, marketing, stylists, managers… it’s not ‘now sit there and sing’ and TADA we have an album….
20% is actually a lot. (though it COULD be more… i’m just saying…)

★corraaaaa's avatar

That’s still a lot of money…

milangurl89's avatar

dont really care, since i downloaded their songs & ringtones illegally and deleted most of them away after that.

sorry, daesung. if only u go solo, then maybe i’ll buy ur CDs. lol

hanii's avatar

That is wow… they should make more money than that, they do most of the work…

yeyoung's avatar

even though it’s still a lot of money for the average person, i think they should still earn more. the bosses of these entertainment companies are gobbling all the money up

@mikki: G-Dragon isn’t actually going to America for his solo album. He said that the reporters misinterpreted him and put out a news article about him putting out a solo album. He actually just said it would feel like a waste of time if he didn’t do anything in America, so after playing for a bit, if there’s any time left over he would write some music. Reporters then put out an article saying he would put out a solo album. All the members laughed when asked if G-Dragon was going to put out a solo album, because it’s not happening yet.

DBSK probably gets millions, and a larger cut as well. LSM doesn’t want to lose his cash cow, like he did with HOT, so he probably gives them a bit more to keep them happy. He probably treats Super Junior and SNSD like shit though.

I agree with secret - American artists don’t make much money from their album sales either. That money goes to their producers and the like - that’s why so many artists are now beginning to produce their own music (and of course, because they want a greater hand in the creative process). All of their profits come from tours.
I don’t really understand why most artists don’t do solo concerts in Korea - despite the fact that their fans see them performing constantly on music shows and festivals, I’m sure they’d still shell out the cash to go see them perform all (or most) of their songs live. And it’s not like the entertainment companies wouldn’t benefit from that as well….I guess they don’t think it’s worth it considering the amount of money they’ll have to spend to set a concert (or worse yet, a tour) up. *sigh* I do hope the artists get a bit more money though - they deserve something for all of the stress and overwork they have to endure.

haha. yes, it is generally a mid to high six figure sum. but at what cost?? their souls???

no avatar

LOL , insane yes, but if you take away the crew , lights, equipment and other travelling expenses. . they’re not left with a lot .BIG bang travels a lot .TVXQ of course makes A LOT MORE income because of their well known name in Asia, but like any artist these groups loses a lot of their profits to the companies. But then again YG isnt abusive and horrible like SM. Most likely I would say each member would have their hands on a couple thousand?

no avatar

680,000 USD for each member is not a lot??!!! That is a F#$#CK ton of money! Or did you mean to say that they make 68,000 dollars each? Could you imagine being 17(Seungri) and make 680,000 dollars a year?

That’s all they make for a profitable year, with all of that training and traveling? That’s shitty money. Then I wonder how much other groups make, those that aren’t so lucky? Prob. eating dirt. Damn I feel bad for them. I think that’s why artists start asking for more money or change company once they rose to fame; cuz finally they can make ultimatum, give me more or I’ll find somewhere better

pieee's avatar

they are doing it cause they love to perform..not for the money.

~Loco_Roco~'s avatar

@ kiim, pretty much lol YG just does stuff for the music. Money is a plus (still VERY important though. Can’t have a broke label lol). All K-Pop artists should get more IMO. With all the harsh training and whatnot.

Well, I mean… if you think about it, the company is the one that invests alot of money on them with their costumes, producing the CDs, possibly even shipping (think of gas prices!) the said CDs (not to mention their other merchandise!), and for sketchy companies (*ehemSMehem*), buying the artists’ popularity, the company has the right to be compensated so much.

I’m sure Big Bang gets a bit more than 20% though (it’s just an approximation), because they’re not really a conventional idol group. Compared to other idol groups who have to pay royalties to their songwriters, Big Bang has their own songwriter and composer, which probably cuts the cost in half, resulting in a larger cut for the members. I’m not sure about this, but does G-Dragon engineer the albums as well? Because that would result in even more profit. 680,000USD is still a lot for one year, but they probably make even more than that, because you can’t really group them into the same calculations as other idol groups.

Thats really sad.. If ur an American entertainer thats what you give away for charity…. lol wow thats really sad. They deserve a lot better. TOO BAD T_T

Due to their status that they’ve built up over the last 2 years, they don’t require much promotion either. They always seem to make huge hits of their albums with hardly any TV appearances. They also have a friendly CEO who is close with them all. A lot of the costs that you would see crippling an idol group, don’t do the same to Big Bang. They are the lucky ones.

that’s ALOT of money T_______________T
even though it’s only around 20%...

Their name (Big Bang) = $$$

I’m happy for Big Bang, but they always deserve the most! I seriously think that Big Bang can succeed over here in America. I know that they will appeal to more than just Asian American people, too (With me, they have). Yea, they’re that good. My sister listens to some of their music (from me) and doesn’t even realize that they are Korean.

I’m not surprised that Big Bang does well.

i think YG is more generous than SM..
u shld look at GD’s closet..
there’s tonnes of clothes,shoes & accessories..
so,i think they get quite a lot for their income..

No doubt YG Is more generous than SM , but i think YG probally give more money to G-dragon. He wrote all the lyrics and composed/produced all songs on Stand up Albums/other albums as well. YG probally gonna give him a little more.

YG Entertainment treats better to all its artists and since Big Bang is the ‘new face ‘of the company and the most famous, it’s probably that YG’s CEO gives them more than a 20% of the money ot the guys and it’s a fact that G-Dragon receives more then his members because he is not just the songwriter but composer, leader, producer, etc. Even Tae Yang mentioned in an interview that G-Dragon is not just the producer of Big Bang but producer of YG Entertainment, so now you can imagine how money this guy has in the bank.
If G-Dragon receives more than the rest is well deserved.
I’m sure they receive more than 20% because their CEO is a close friend of them. I remember an Interview when he told that G-Dragon is like his own son.

I think it’s quite fair that they got 20% share from the album and the company got the other (although it’s supposed to be a little bit higher like 30?). After all, that 80% go to production cost, producer, composer, music engineer, promotion, and all technical stuff. But I think they’re more loaded than this since all the individual activity are go to their own pocket.

DBSK sure got payed most, they just held an asian concert last year and a japan concert this year. That’s a lot of cash. And I saw the member carry a very expensive bag around.

The thing that I don’t understand is, why YG publish the numbers? To show the success rate of BB (we know that already) or for transparency?
