An Interview with TVXQ

TVXQ DBSK KPOP Korean Music

Here is an interesting interview done with TVXQ / DBSK in a van on December 29th. The only time they actually had time to do an interview. They've just returned from Japan (rehearsing for end of year Japan shows) to participate on the SBS Gayo Daejeon show and will go back to Japan the next day.

Translation from vaseline@TVXQau and DNBN (with some corrections).

Q: Due to the song “JUMON-MIROTIC”, do you think your fan base / celebrity has grown?

A: “Yes, I think so. In airplanes, not only do the air hostesses request our autographs but the pilots also. That didn't really happen before. I’m very pleased that there has been an increase of male fans as well. During “O-Jung.Ban.Hap”, we were known as the group that sang tough songs. But now we hear from people in their thirties that we sing songs that they can also sing along to.” said U-know Yunho.

“I think we’ve become a national idol. There are a lot of older female fans that tell us now, “You guys all look like grown up men now. We see you as men now.” Our management even told us, “You can start dating now. It’ll help with your images, to look manly.” But we have no time to meet women at the moment.” said Hero Jaejoong.

Q: I think you guys have had some difficult heartaches right before JUMON-MIROTIC.

“We were afraid of the people that kept looking at us with the mindset of, “DBSK are no longer the “it” people in Korea. Your songs are no longer the trend.” We were afraid and worried during the period where we were preparing for our comeback in Korea. So we made up our minds to be head strong. We wanted to hear, “DBSK, they’re definitely something else / They’re different from other singers”. said Xiah Junsu.

“JUMON-MIROTIC is a song that has DBSK’s color mixed with Pop. It’s a song that gave re-birth to DBSK.” said Max Changmin.

Q: Hasn’t the fact that gagman Wang Biho (Yoon Hyung Bin) said, “DBSK’s fanclub consists of over 800,000 people, but how come DBSK can only sell 100,000 copies of the album?” helped you in your album sales?

“I admit that it did help and I’m grateful. His word wasn’t a pact or a rule. But more of a suspicion of, “If you are their fan, then you should be buying their albums.” I hear that other artists have increased albums sales also. I think fandom culture has really improved if you see the fans these days that clean up after everyone in concerts, and donate money towards the members’ birthdays.” said, U-know Yunho.

Q: I think you guys have formed a rivalry with the group “Big Bang”.

“Big Bang and DBSK sing different genres of music, and we don’t think we’re better than them. Big Bang knows how to have fun yet perform well on stage. I think, when we go on stage that we think “We’re the best on this stage”, but I think they also think that way about themselves as well.” said Xiah Junsu.

Q: I heard that “JUMON-MIROTIC” got banned by the Commision of Youth Protection

“I don’t understand the banning. So that’s why I feel like we’ve inconvenienced everyone. When we attended the Golden Disk Awards to receive the Daesang, we had to change some of the lyrics, but the original feel just didn’t come alive. I’m sure the people that listened felt the same also.” said Micky Yoochun.

Q: Ever since your debut, you have grown so very fast!

“Like some said, we’re only eating the rice that other people have deliciously made (other people paved the way for us). It’s just that we also put in that much effort, and eat the rice with ‘Golden Spoons’ (lucky / fortunate).” said, Xiah Junsu.

Q: What is DBSK’s dream?

“It is our dream to be able to continue doing K-Pop music that only we can pull off. It is also our job, our duty to get rid of the misconception that idols can only dance good but can’t sing or have no idea of what good singing is.” said, U-know Yunho.

Reading this at first glance, you'll think that they come off cocky as hell. They have a right to be, but the cockiness comes through because some things get lost in translation.

thats great they can have a gf..fans gotta be realictic, cause dbsk wont be single 4 the rest of their lives and also, they wont date all the millions of fans they have…so to these crazy obsessive fans, get a life of your own, get real and deal with the fact, they’ll marry some day and not to U. Im a big fan, and if the boys have gf’s and are happy, then im happy too!

@procrastinator
you are probably right. but popularity is a complicated thing
DBSK during “Hug” era were more popular then Shinee after all their Nunas, Oxygens and Amigos. So who knows what will happen in 4 years. All I know for sure is that DBSK will never be as popular as they were during O-JBH period. Their only chance now is Japan.

procrastinator, can’t agree more with you.. SHinee definitely start off with better songs and situation.. and they’re different from any other SM boybands. somehow, super junior’s songs sound like DBSK’s. and they’re like no difference, besides their looks. DBSK are more god looking, frankly said. Shinee on the other plate, have their own style of fashion and music, that’s a really good thing though.. I’m quite bored at suju and dbsk though.. sorry for the cass, I’m not bashing them cause I like them, very much to be honest. but don’t you also think that they’re getting a little boring? I mean, their songs sound almost the same. I know it’s so SMP style whatsoever, but can’t they grow more creative or innovative ? like you can guess the songs. too predictable, aren’t they? but nonetheless, still like em’ but starting to give SHINEE more props and attentions. smile

im a big TVXQ and i think the same way
@natsu
dont know if japan is there only chance
but if i is they will be ok
since in japan their are getting very popular
an alot of people are noticing them

^nah I think their fourth album had a huge difference from o.j.b.h(which i did not like, only 3 songs i liked) rather mirotic had a lot better songs(is one of my favorite albums actually at the moment)

Gosh I forgot this is not the place to talk about other artists..
I’m starting to sound like those people who sneak into bigbang posts and boost up a war there.. ridiculous.. so, the interview was fun to read.. well, God, give them girlfriends.. and hopefully they can survive from the fans.. amen..

I agree SHINee is a great group, but to say they’ll be bigger than DBSK is a pretty big assumption. It may possibly be true, but we won’t know until years from now. (I personally don’t think so, but I’m bias =P)
Can I say at least that DBSK are 10x better looking? lol…

1. heh, funny thing is that many dbsk fans on lj and soompi often say things like DBSK is different from any other boysband. It’s their moto or something.
2. Shinee always reminds me of Big Bang, U-Kiss and all that young boysbands that have debuted in year 2008. Nothing new

yeah, they kinda go like more electronic pop-ish kind of style in Mirotic.. but still, sort of predictable. It’s a shame that mirotic got banned, cause under my sky is plainly lame. either way, go for dbsk, they got to stand still on top, after 5 years ..

it didn’t come off as bitchy to me
it’s just that dbsk is so big, there is no way they can’t completely deny their success. it would be weird to see them be like “we look up to big bang, we hope to be as good as them someday” or something
they have to agree that they’re pretty good haha

@Mia: No problem, I respect your opinion, and don’t mind agreeing to disagree. ^_^ Thank you for not being a lunatic fan and understanding. For me though, considering SHINee’s age and experience, I can’t help but be impressed.

@Reina: I’ve listened to each member’s solos and Changmin’s voice overall just failed to impress me. High notes don’t mean anything to me. A banshee can hit a high note. I love Junsu, however.

i didnt think they started it off cocky…. and why is shinee mention here people???? kinda stupid to compare them??? And who knows the future?? whos knows whats gonna happen in 5 years from now??? gosh just stick with the facts now. Even if there is a day that shinee’s popularity will overcome dbsk its normal. Stars in korea dont stay popular forever and thats the truth. but dbsk will still be a lengend. As they have set marks in the industry like no other before.

bitching does not equal disagreeing. well, at least in my dictionary. personally i think that 1/5 of Shinee and 3/5 of DBSK are really good at singing. Am I allowed to have my personal opinion?

Being new to K-Pop, I have a question I was hoping someone here could answer. What does SMP music mean? I gather it’s a genre, but of what kind?

Thanks!

@Natsu: I’m sorry you feel that way. However, I think that what Mia and Reina did was state an opinion. You clearly said that your statement was “hard facts”. Thinking that what you have to say is fact, in my book, equals bitching, making you the first one to bitch. Congratulations! Feel free to disagree, but you should feel honored to have made the list, you crazy Cassie, you. :D

@m3mi: I mentioned SHINee because I felt that they were relevant to U-Know’s statement. Though, your obsessive question marks and obvious irritation makes your post bitch number 4. Congratulations!

Although, I think that my initial statement was misunderstood. I’m not talking about songs, albums, situations (wtf?), or popularity. I just like their voices standalone and was impressed by them for their age and experience (or lack there of).

Stop being so defensive, ladies.

He’s been made out to be the aesexual one so much, I had started to doubt he has any male urges. Although, after hearing his statement about wanting to do a lot of kissing scenes (with girls) I had regained hope; but that statement just made him seem so innocent and “untouched”. raspberry

Of course, someday that will change. I hope its soon, they all sound so eager to get laid. Well, at 20+ what can you expect from a guy? Especially in a culture so conservative about sex.

It’s Internet so you can call me any way you want.
But there were 2 things in your response that i found questionable:
1. isn’t cassies the name of the chinese and korean dbsk fans? well,  i’m not from asia
2. according to dictionary “hard facts”=information that is definitely true and can be proven. Can you prove me that all 5 members of Shinee have impressive vocals? if no, then all i have said before is hard facts. XD

I love DBSK, but I admit that Shinee are indeed more talented than DBSK when they first debutted, but somehow they are just not as popular as DBSK was during the “Hug” days, but I think that’s because there are so many other rival groups. As for the future, who knows who will be bigger? But yeah, as a group Shinee is very consistent. DBSK, however, still leads in vocals and performance but that’s only because they’ve been around longer. But again, to say that Shinee will be more successful than DBSK in the future is uncertain. Talent= instant success. I hate to bring this up, but compare CSJH to WG. CSJH is clearly more talented but WG is more popular.

@Natsu: Thanks, I will definitely do that.

To address your quandaries:
1. Cassie is used to refer to DBSK fans in general, since their the original fanclub and the largest. No one cares about what they call themselves outside of Korea; and most people refer to Cassies outside of Asia as “International Cassies” because as I said no one cares what they call themselves whether in Australia, Peru, or Anartica. A Cassie is a Cassie.

2. According to Webster, a fact is a concept whose truth can be proved or something that can be verified according to an established standard of evaluation. Information doesn’t have to be proven, unless its being refered in a scholarly setting, so anything can be information, but not everything can be fact. “Hard Facts” is not in any acceptable dictionary, but stands as an expression for a truth that can be hard to swallow; like the hard fact that Dallas won’t be going to the Superbowl this year. Hopefully, English isn’t your first language, because that statement was just pathetic. I’m stating an opinion not a fact, so I have nothing to prove, now you also fail at reading as well as trying to sound intelligent.

When TVXQ rarely ever does anything involving women/girls, Junsu is the cheese that stands alone to maintain the innocent role.

From the Haptic CFs to the Mirotic video, where everyone was captivated by the chick and he was giving a ligh show.

Though, as I said that will all change; but will that change be a good thing. Junsu can be sexy minus hot chicks hanging off him (Seungri) and any mucho-macho-behavior, hopefully gettin’ some won’t change that. XD

Its okay to bitch about bitching, but not okay to bitch when you’re a zealous fan who will bite for no reason at all. Bitching must have a purpose and a good reason behind it.

Now, say something worthwile next time, or you’re banned from this discussion.

1. ok, and who is BigEast then in your opinion?
2. You actually don’t make a lot of sense you know. I state as a fact that more than half of Shinee boys can’t sing. You disagree but at the same time you ignore my request for showing me why my opinion is only an opinion but not a fact. You can’t prove that more than a half of Shinee boys can sing.
And yes, English is not my first language that’s why I use a dictionary when i find out that some people don’t fully understand what i mean. The definition of “hard facts” is actually from a dictionary. I didn’t make it up.
p.s. i sound like a cassie and a bitch and you sound like a butthurt fan, sorry

I can understand that you’re not a fan of DBSK, but to call them AVERAGE?! If they’re “average” then I don’t know what you think of the rest of the kpop groups. If they’re “average” then the rest of the groups must be “below average”.

@Natsu:
1. “The Cassies of Japan”, see how easy it is? Its much easier to give them all one name, than care about all of their incarnations. A Cassie is a Cassie, I could care less about what Japan wants to call themselves.
2. Since I’m nice, let’s do this play by play:
- You misdefine a term and bring up the dictionary.
- I prove you wrong by citing an actual scholarly dictionary and two definitions.
- I tell you that fact is information that must meet a requirement.
- I insult your ability to utilize the English language because it is quite pathetic.
- You then say that you say that your statement is a fact, but cannot match the actual definition of a fact by A.) supplying
proof that can be evaluated by an established standard of evaluation and B.) providing a credible source to support your claim.
- A standard, to help you better understand, would by like a reference point when making measurements (12 inches = 1 foot; 3 feet = 1 yard)
- Since music is subject to change and everything depends on taste, there is no standard for evaluation, we can only state opinions.
- I have repeatedly said that this is my OPINION, so I therefore cannot prove it and have no intentions of doing so, since I obviously understand the different between an opinion and fact.

My advice:
- The internet has a lot of facts, see if you can find any.
- English is not your first language, don’t argue with someone so much better than you.
- Stop trying.

I respect your opinion of me, I don’t agree, but I know how you people are. I don’t think there’s anything worse than stupid, so “butthurt” is, my dear. (Which, by the way, is not in the dictionary either, just so you know). smile
