An Interview with TVXQ

TVXQ DBSK KPOP Korean Music

Here is an interesting interview done with TVXQ / DBSK in a van on December 29th. The only time they actually had time to do an interview. They've just returned from Japan (rehearsing for end of year Japan shows) to participate on the SBS Gayo Daejeon show and will go back to Japan the next day.

Translation from vaseline@TVXQau and DNBN (with some corrections).

Q: Due to the song “JUMON-MIROTIC”, do you think your fan base / celebrity has grown?

A: “Yes, I think so. In airplanes, not only do the air hostesses request our autographs but the pilots also. That didn't really happen before. I’m very pleased that there has been an increase of male fans as well. During “O-Jung.Ban.Hap”, we were known as the group that sang tough songs. But now we hear from people in their thirties that we sing songs that they can also sing along to.” said U-know Yunho.

“I think we’ve become a national idol. There are a lot of older female fans that tell us now, “You guys all look like grown up men now. We see you as men now.” Our management even told us, “You can start dating now. It’ll help with your images, to look manly.” But we have no time to meet women at the moment.” said Hero Jaejoong.

Q: I think you guys have had some difficult heartaches right before JUMON-MIROTIC.

“We were afraid of the people that kept looking at us with the mindset of, “DBSK are no longer the “it” people in Korea. Your songs are no longer the trend.” We were afraid and worried during the period where we were preparing for our comeback in Korea. So we made up our minds to be head strong. We wanted to hear, “DBSK, they’re definitely something else / They’re different from other singers”. said Xiah Junsu.

“JUMON-MIROTIC is a song that has DBSK’s color mixed with Pop. It’s a song that gave re-birth to DBSK.” said Max Changmin.

Q: Hasn’t the fact that gagman Wang Biho (Yoon Hyung Bin) said, “DBSK’s fanclub consists of over 800,000 people, but how come DBSK can only sell 100,000 copies of the album?” helped you in your album sales?

“I admit that it did help and I’m grateful. His word wasn’t a pact or a rule. But more of a suspicion of, “If you are their fan, then you should be buying their albums.” I hear that other artists have increased albums sales also. I think fandom culture has really improved if you see the fans these days that clean up after everyone in concerts, and donate money towards the members’ birthdays.” said, U-know Yunho.

Q: I think you guys have formed a rivalry with the group “Big Bang”.

“Big Bang and DBSK sing different genres of music, and we don’t think we’re better than them. Big Bang knows how to have fun yet perform well on stage. I think, when we go on stage that we think “We’re the best on this stage”, but I think they also think that way about themselves as well.” said Xiah Junsu.

Q: I heard that “JUMON-MIROTIC” got banned by the Commision of Youth Protection

“I don’t understand the banning. So that’s why I feel like we’ve inconvenienced everyone. When we attended the Golden Disk Awards to receive the Daesang, we had to change some of the lyrics, but the original feel just didn’t come alive. I’m sure the people that listened felt the same also.” said Micky Yoochun.

Q: Ever since your debut, you have grown so very fast!

“Like some said, we’re only eating the rice that other people have deliciously made (other people paved the way for us). It’s just that we also put in that much effort, and eat the rice with ‘Golden Spoons’ (lucky / fortunate).” said, Xiah Junsu.

Q: What is DBSK’s dream?

“It is our dream to be able to continue doing K-Pop music that only we can pull off. It is also our job, our duty to get rid of the misconception that idols can only dance good but can’t sing or have no idea of what good singing is.” said, U-know Yunho.

Reading this at first glance, you'll think that they come off cocky as hell. They have a right to be, but the cockiness comes through because some things get lost in translation.

About the SHINee comment.  All I am going to say is that they would reach to the point of TVXQ status pretty soon, like in a few years.  I have to give it to LSM, knowing how to find talent.  He’s about the only man that I know of that releases major talent.  (well there are some groups that lately he release I don’t like. XD)

I did not find this interview cocky at all.  I don’t know, and if it was, I think they have the right to be.  LOL.

Yes them dating thing.  Fans would be sad, but they need to get over it.  LOL

I don’t think they sound cocky at all - in fact, I think they sounded really humble. It’s always struck me how down-to-earth DBSK seems, despite the fact that they’re treated like living legends.
I’m also really shocked that SM is finally allowing them to date publicly (now if only they could find the time…) - that’s a big feat for an idol group and I honestly never would ave expected it or for them to reveal it in an interview. They’re being a lot more candid now, I think.
By the way, I think you should have highlighted the whole paragraph on Big Bang - maybe people will finally stop comparing them.

Oh, and @ Sarah:
Please don’t bring SHINee into this - people say enough crap about them in relation to DBSK as it is - and making a comment like yours on a site like this is only going to start up unnecessary, unwarranted bashing.

awawawawa… heheh i agree with what xiah said… each group not only bb and tvxq, when they are on stage they think they are the best… and omg… why are people bring shinee in here.. no, dnt do that… and wow… that video was funnie.. ahah i la hongki he’s so cute.. ahha heechul was just laughing.. lol..

>Thanks for not spelling my name correctly as well. (it sorta alleviates my prior embarassment)

> Anyhooo, i believe we have now reached above 100 posts. Awesome or what! ^_^

Sorry, I didn’t mean to mispell your name (yeah I don’t pay attention either “Carl” usually becomes “Cral”), but I did mean what I said about your spelling of “Sarah”(Sahra) being so much more cooler, which is why I did indeed change it. raspberry

Danish, huh? Just wondering, are you perhaps Danish?

Huh? You changed your name now? Whatevers - yeah, I replied right after I read the comments just below your first one so I didn’t see the huge argument going on on the second page. It does explain why there are so many comments already though.

Well, I guess that’s that.

@Sarah
1. ok, now you say that all fans of DBSK should be called cassies not because of some rules or past agreements but because it’s easier for you? Then let me call myself not a cassie but just a DBSK fan because it’s easier for me
2. i really appreciate your attempt at being nice smile
-I used an actual dictionary too. It’s pretty popular one, at least here in Europe. (the web version of it is here if you are interested http://www.ldoceonline.com/ )
-I was studying logic at school and in university for some time. It’s pretty interesting thing. If you have some time, you can try to find something about this study too.
According to one of the basic rules of logic, if a fact is not wrong then it is right. My fact is “4/5 of Shinee are not that good at singing”. I ask you (=a person who knows and likes Shinee more than I do) to prove me wrong. You disagree with my opinion but still don’t provide me with the facts that disprove my previous statement. So the logical consequence is that if my fact can’t be proven to be wrong than it is right.
-Everything depends on taste indeed but if a person really can sing, his talent is, without question, seen. I’m actually quite a nice person too and even if i don’t like shinee i still find jonghyun a very talented boy. if you give me some links (for example yt links) of performances that show that the vocals of other boys are good, I’ll stop this argument. the question is if you are able to do it.
3. “English is not your first language, don’t argue with someone so much better than you” - Could this explain this phrase for me, please?
if i am being rude or was rude in some of my previous posts, i’m terribly sorry. firstly, you already know that english is not my first language and i am not able to express my thoughts perfectly in this language. secondly, i guess our mentalities are kind of different too, so there can also be some misunderstandings :(

Like Einsten said “Work is 1% inspiration plus 99% transpiration”

DBSK is where they are not only because they are good singers or good looking and charming, is because they are very, very strong willed, ambitious, disciplined, perfectionists and hard workers to the point of exhaustion.

They have been like that for 5 YEARS.

Their success was not easy or random.

Maybe some new groups will be where they are now, but DBSK will be in another level by that time.

no avatar

In response to a couple people’s response:

I don’t think that they are being cocky as well. They need the confidence in order to perform well.

I’ve always thought that they deserve to date and be happy. Yes, there will be some jealousy, but if we are realistic, only a small handful of fans will ever have a chance with the boys. And if the girlfriend does something bad, then well, that’s life. People make mistakes. They definitely don’t need a storm of fangirls telling them what they can/should or can not/should not do.

I also think that you can be a fan without joining a fanclub, or therefore being a Cassie. For me, being a Cassie is like… pledging you preference to a group, but I like many groups at the same time. Sometimes I will like DBSK better. Sometimes I like Big Bang better. It just all depends on what I like at the time. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it. But I definitely think that you can be a fan without being a Cassie. So they have way more than 800k fans out there.

stevewonder06's avatar

I don’t think they were being cocky in their responses. I lol’d at how the dating thing was bolded. hopefully fangirls will leave them alone and let them be men and date other women.
LMAO @Hongki, he seriously can’t dance to save his life but its funny though XDD at least he can sing. lol.

stevewonder06's avatar

oh and it also funny how even DBSK mentioned that BB and DBSK have different genres of music so yea there you go people. theres no big rivalry between them. I do admit that i’ve said DBSK is, in my opinion, better than BB but i do agree with what they have said though that they are different genres and stuff like that. lol.

stevewonder06's avatar

@natsu
if one person can’t prove you wrong it doesnt automatically mean you’re right. there probably is someone in this world that can prove you wrong. I think Shinee is good at singing(maybe not Taemin or Minho but they have their own special talents as well.)
anyways im just saying. and yes not all DBSK fans are cassies.

I don’t see how they come off as cocky, LMAO, but they deserve to be, I mean seriously they’re like one of the top in asia. And what JUNSU MEANS is that if they don’t think they’re the best on stage, they will never be able to perform to an acceptable standard, he mentioned that in a previous interview as well.

AND YES! THEY CAN FINALLY START DATING! Hell I ADORE them, but this is great for them to now finally be able to go on with their social life. The Hardcore Cassie’s better not hurt their gf’s though >_>...that would be the most retarded thing ever.

no avatar

I don’t see what’s cocky about it.  I surmise their 09 activities will be similar to 08:  Asia tour, Japan tour, a-nation, and Korean album.

mangoes's avatar

I’m a hardcoreSHINee fan and I don’t see how are they’re related to this article-__-

However, I do think they sound cocky. Lately, they’ve been cocky. But I guess it’s still bearable since it’s not that much, though I don’t think ANYONE has the right to act cocky, so when I read people saying “they deserve to be cocky”.... wth? no one does.

Hmmm. As for their success, I am truly happy. They deserve what they have now. Certainly, they have worked a lot to get their place and no one doubts how Talented they are :333

DBSG hwaiting! :3

no avatar

I don’t see how they are being cocky at all, instead I thought they were pretty humble with the interview, as they always are. I’m happy that they’re finally allowed to start dating, and it still irks me that there are fangirls who can’t stand the fact that can have gfs.

LMAO at Shinee in being in the comments. I think AKP’s comments sometimes gets as ridiculous as soompis. I love Shinee, but comparing them to DBSK right now is still a little early. I’ve yet to see another band hold as strong a foothold on their popularity 5 yrs down the line as DBSK, so only time can tell.

Obvi alot of people rnt gng to find wat DBSK said Cocky or bad becz most of you guys prbly like DBSK and r probably Biast.

Admit it, u stoopid fans. Dbsk sounded like ryt retrds in tht interview. Just becz their so popular doesnt give them the right to be cocky and arrogant. But then again nobody can judge how DBSK r from Interviews, Peformances, etc.

With the Shinee thing, it was very lame on bringing it up and i think that Shinee’ debut was WAY more popular then wen DBSK debuted. Doubt anybody even heard of them when they debuted. <—dbsk. Its the same with Big Bang, I doubt anybody heard of them wen they debuted.

Who nos really wat can happen in the future. but i hope Shinee the best since they r a talented group. <—

( Somebody said Shinees vocals r rubbish. Uve gotta bee kiding me. Their al above average! Tae mins like U know, U know wasnt very good of a singer at first but through years hes improved.

Also somebody dissed, shinees capablities of rapping. I dont see DBSK being brilliant at rapping, Have u heard hero rapping its worse then minhos.

I think I know why TVXQ is now allowed to date. Japanis their priority now, leaving Korea to be pleased by SHinee to defeat Big Bang themselves and if you observe, fancams aren’t allowed in Japan. You could go to JAIL for that. If you try to follow JE stuff, they tend to be caught with girls by the paparazzi and they are idols. Thus, it gives them some kind of manly image and fans can get an idea of what kind of boyfriends they could be (eating Italian that night? classy. Going to a golf range for a date? fun. movies? sweet.) AVEX especially does that with their female talents, like Koda Kumi dating that SMAP guy or Ayumi with Nagase or Namie Amuro with Ken of V6 or that AAA girl with that guys from NEWS. To let them pull that kind of tactic with the boys might happen, now that the boys are actually talking about dating. XD It’s just too Avex of a move.

no avatar

hahaha they got permission to date now? I know they all had some relationships but those were secret. But now I can see Jaejoong and Hanhyojoo!!! lol… or maybe not.
I don’t think they were really cocky because you have to believe you are the best or at least really good to perform well and to get people to notice you. And even if they were being cocky, well… who cares because they kind of deserve to be. They’ve accomplished so much

I don’t find them cocky at all. I actually like how they handled the interview, it’s honest and very professional. Perhaps it’s the honesty which came off as cockiness to some people.

Shinee are talented for their age. For me, their strength mostly lies on Jonghyun and that they dance choreographed dance very well. Hopefully when they get older they’ll build more charisma and stage presence like their DBSK sunbae. Then they’ll be more successful.

The thing is, in Japan if fans see idols on dates they don’t post up fancams or pictures for the entire world to know (cough*taesu stalkers*cough) so DBSK are pretty safe there. I’m saying that because I’m pretty sure one of the DBSK boys have a gf in Japan. don’t ask me how I know, I just do.

although i’m a die-heart fan of dbsk…i dont really mind them dating…it’s been 5 yrs. it’s about time that cassies need to give them some space…people who love them should hope for the best for them and like them for their music…for me…of course they’re cute and good-looking..but if it wont for their beautiful voices i would’ve stop beening their fan a long time ago…and 5 yrs has gone by for me as their fan…so as long as they keep making music for me to enjoy i’ll be happy and support them…i hope they stay as long as some of the japanese groups…who are probably in their 30s and still getting no. 1 hits.

i actually disagree w/ some people who say that Shinee had a more successful debut…
dbsk was more popular when they first came out…and their relationship w/ their fans seem closer…one of the main reasons for that is that many groups debuted the same yr as shinee while the presence of dbsk was stronger because their were fewer groups that debuted during their time..

shinee is a good group and will probably follow in dbsk’s footsteps…but they are not the new dbsk…their music style is different from dbsk…dbsk debuted as an accapella-dance group while shinee is more of a hip pop/r&b group…their music is different so therefore we shouldnt compare them…
personally, i think no one can replace dbsk…

ya they do sound a little cocky, but i think the music/entertainment business does that. sorta hard not to be with like 800 000 fans (and i think these are just the ones in the official fan club, not including people like me) and girls drooling at your feet.

nah they didnt sound cocky at all. one of the things i really like about dbsk is that they are down to earth (act or not, i still appreciate it) even when they’re considered asia’s star. i think it’s a value they obtained in training, i gotta give it to SM for that. srsly, being proud n cocky wont do them any good, even if everyone knows they have the right to be. yunho is sometimes cocky tho, but i dont blame him since he’s the leader n i think being a leader probably that kind of personality is the best.
regarding shinee, it’s still to early to say. dbsk had a cute concept back then, but shinee jumped straight to teen pop.
dbsk should try and be like shinhwa next. that group released like, how many full albums? 8?

at least even if they are considered as an idol group which is what they started as, they put a good new meaning to that name raising up the standards for other idol groups to emulate. Its can either put other idol groups to shame or it can make them work harder to be close to whatever their sunbaenims had already achieved,
