If accent is really a problem then
why come singers like shakira can get popular in america?
I think race might have a little bit to do with
I know people who will not look at a movie if the cast is majority asian
unless its an action movie
and if they do they will bitch the whole time
and people who wont even listen to a song sung by an asian
even if it is in english
WTF
I know Mike lives in Hawaii so it's expected to hear Utada there since most of Hawaii are asians anyways
but where the heck do you live hitomi?
I don't hear any of Utada, Se7en or BoA and I listen to the morning radio every weekday.
i live in Waterloo, Iowa -_-
..Damn that is a random ass place to be hearing Se7en yo
I tried to request for BoA on my local radio...i don't think they have her ROFL
Canada is less of a democracy than America! I've been requesting like crazy but have I heard a single breakthrough English debut song even once on the radio? Noooooooooooo sirreeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
Asian artists won't break through because America is scared of China.
Because they should promote in radios, TV shows, etc.
not clubs people.
People love to go clubbing and dancing, but they should realize
that some of us arent like that.
And i think that because some of the artists don't have perfect english, so
i think that their management are afraid that people are not
going to support them because of their english skills.
They are making it!!. Slowly but they will break through!
Americans are closed minded. They all like it in their "LOCAL" way of thinking. Just English!
I lived in other countries and they embrace music from all over the world.
Theres the racial issue also.. Yes americans are racist. Its sad but its true. A number one nation in economy but they lack on the cultural knowledge.
Minorities are the ones that know how to appreciate all cultures because they come from other places and some of them are even from mixed backgrounds.
Thats why Asians can break through real fast all over the world except in America.
'cause the only reason we know of that Tequila chick, is because she's a whore.
I doubt any Korean singers are willing to go that far xD;
[and I'm hoping they never do] lol
Correction, She's a smart whore because she made money from it. =D
Asian artists won't break through because of the age-old issues of stereotypes. It's a sad thing really.
I thought i should add that charice has the BIGGEST chance to break through. Why? Cause Opra gave her stamp of approval and everyone knows that if Opra approves it EVERYONE loves it.
Also the guy who produced Mariah, and whitney is producing her. So yea if an asian artist is gonna break through, it's prob gonna be her
WTF

gah! i know! i would rather hear BoA then Se7en. no offence(:
but i still would love to buy her CD at a...umm idk...a STORE.
i went to Mall of America and they still didnt have it. :(
I didnt read any of the jibberish that was posted above me so I'll write the main reason why Asians can't break out through the music scene just yet;
Asians are either:
1. super genius nerds that LOVE math/science and have no chance with women since we have little dicks
2. stick skinny gangstas with baggy pants, long hair bangs, a tattoo with a tiger or dragon, and a riced out honda... still with tiny dicks.
3. hard working grocery/dry cleaning/nail salon business owners that have come from their native countries 20 years ago and STILL can't speak english... and still have tiny dicks.
4. Martial Artist.
Asians lack sex appeal. Asians still have tons of stereotypes to break through.
BoA? Se7en? Wonder girls? Crown J?
All talented people. None of em' speak a word of English. Sorry. (and the crap coming out of Crown J's mouth is not considered English to me kthx).
From my observation it's going to take YEARS before any Asian artist is going to be successful in the US industry. The artists mentioned above are paving that road, but it's going to take someone a lot more special to make that success a reality.
People are becoming less ignorant though. My friend was at a premier of Fast and Furious and he said that a group 3 8th grade white girls were screaming for Sung Kang.

You're definitely right. People are becoming less ignorant. As I stated before, it's just going to take a very very long time before Asians are accepted as "mainstream" in the entertainment world. I commend AKP's continuing support of that. I just happen to be a skeptic as of this moment. For all of our benefits, hopefully that will change in the future. :]
Sony, a Japanese company owns Sony Pictures which owns Columbia Pictures, Tristar Pictures, and MGM. Sony Music owns Columbia Music, Sony BMG. Sony owns big media companies in America but they don't have asians in the key positions (managers, producers, chairman, etc.) If they did then these people would put big money behind asian artists and a much higher likelihood of success. Justin Lin is like the only young asian director in Hollywood, and he made Sung Kang into a cool - likeable character. You need asians in these key positions and being promoted properly. Korea's Samsung (world's largest conglemerate) should buy a large american media company and put asians in key positions. Threaten to pull advertising money and dollars to various media outlets / networks (TV and radio) unless they playback your asian artists music and they will be put in rotation with a lot of airplay in no time. Money talks, and you need asians strategically positioned in these key roles. You never seen an asian artist really pushed with multi-millions of dollars trying to promote them and what not, so how can one really succeed without any support?
Also, I think trying to bring over established stars in Asia is a big mistake. Sure they have appeal over there but that's a different market. They don't really know our culture nor language, so the best way to succeed is to find talent within (the Asian-American community). Have the parents encourage kids to do acting, comedy, music, etc. instead of the stereotypical doctor and lawyer. I think with the 2nd generation of asian-americans who grew up in this culture becoming parents, you'll see a lot more of that, with a much larger talent pool to draw from.
Asian artists won't break through because America is scared of China.
^ THAT made me laugh.
Truthfully, the main reason why the asian artists that are transfering over from the east to the west wont break through is cause they just have that loving asian accent.
Because of American stereotypes on asians, that asian accent just doesn't sound....cool? Like if you think about it, every other major accent besides the asian accent is much cooler. Kinda not fair right? But what can we do about public opinion?
Therefore, the only solution left for our precious asian stars is that they somehow fully and perfectly learn the english language along with the slang as if they lived here for like....10 years...
Of course...that's pretty difficult...
Another thing these asian artists need including the ones that grew up in the states, is the backing of a major label or artist.
I'm sure you guys have heard of Kid Cudi....i'm sure you've possibly heard of Drake...
These guys are backed by the best of the best such as Kanye West (Kid Cudi), and Lil' Wayne (Drake). Hell...even Kanye West had to be backed by Jay-Z to make his success in the industry. and if you wanna trace even further, Jay-Z was backed by Biggie. Rihanna was backed by Jay-Z, Chris Brown backed by T-Pain...i believe, and Justin Timberlake backed by Timbaland...
Everyone's got backs.
Out of all the asian artists I've seen, seven's closest to breaking through. Looks like he's gaining some back and hopefully some more. 'Cept he REALLY needs to perfect his english to the point where noone's able to tell that he has an asian accent.
So that's my theory to it.
1. Need major backing by producer or artist.
2. Get rid of the asian accent.
i don't think its that they can't break though its just that no ones ever really tired before. I mean sure there were probably a few that did but they didn't keep going with it. Yeah i'd say its going to be diffult and may take some time but if they got the talent, the drive & then determation anything is possible
Well it would make sense if Asian Americans were getting fame. They aren't even getting much national media attention and they are citizens. I couldn't see why foreigners would get more publicity than locals.
