On the night of May 9, three broadcasting stations reported that presidential candidate Moon Jae In has become the 12th president of South Korea.

The three major broadcasting stations MBC, SBS, and KBS closely monitored the election and declared Moon Jae In as the victor.

All three broadcasting stations revealed that presidential candidate Moon received a total of 41.4% of the vote.  Followed by Hong Jun Pyo with 23.3%, and Ahn Cheol Soo by 21.8% respectively. His rivals conceded victory after the news.

Following, Moon Jae In declared victory and stepped up to the podium and gave a message to the masses. "Thank you. Thank you so much.  This is such a great victory thanks to all of your support in order to create a righteous nation and a nation of unity...I would like to thank the fellow presidential candidates who have walked along in this race together and will work to strive towards a new future in building the new Republic of Korea."

Moon Jae In is the son of North Korean refugees and is a human rights lawyer turned liberal politician. He favors limiting the power of chaebols and has a very different outlook on North Korea compared to the previous administration. He favors dialogue with North Korea as opposed to sanctions and being strict which was favored by Park Geun Hye's administration and the United States. Also on his plate will be the THAAD issue, which was deployed last week, and which Moon Jae In stated that he will thoroughly review it.

would it have to be coalition government because he didn't have a majority?

He got 40 percent of the votes whereas the rest of the candidates received less than that. It won't be a coalition government because that's not really how it works in Korea. There were 13 candidates on the ballot, it's very difficult for someone to receive a majority.

It's good to see an older Korean person with their natural gray hair. It looks handsome. I can count on one hand how many old Koreans I saw with their natural gray hair and I lived there for 2 years!

Definitely the best candidate, even though I don't agree with him on some things. It's time for a Lunar New Korea with Moon rising.

I don't follow politics and so don't know if he is good or not but I do follow kpop!  And I hear no mention of thanking Twice.  Why?!!   Cheer Up was his anthem for his campaign and I'm sure that helped with the voters.

Yeah Koreans are not that ignorant that they would vote for a president for their anthem song lmao

Obviously most voters' primary voting criteria would be based on the candidate that resonate with their concerns, issues and political outlook. You obviously are ignorant in taking my statement seriously. This was a tongue in cheek reference to this site's past article about the new prez using Twice Cheer Up in his campaign. This is allkpop site not a news site so stop being so obtuse.

If I remember correctly a few other candidates used kpop songs as well. Don't ask me what they were though.
