According to the Korea Customs Service (KCS), a group of Korean citizens have been arrested for smuggling 2,348 kgs (5,176 lbs) of gold in their private parts over the course of 2 years.

A total of 51 people were arrested at Incheon International Airport in early April. It's reported that the smuggling first started about two years ago in 2015.

Male smugglers hid five or six gold bars sizing 3cm x 3cm and weighing 200 grams in their rectums while the female smugglers hid the gold in their rectums or vaginas.

The value of the gold revealed to be about 113.5 billion KRW or about 100 million USD. This is the highest value of gold confiscated in a single case.

The gold price in Korea tends to be higher due to a 15 percent additional tax put on gold products. A KCS official explained that gold smuggling is an easy money making business because of the price gap.

To resolve the issue, a sweeping crackdown on gold smugglers will be soon implemented, according to the official of KCS.

So what I'm not understanding is this. 1. So they confiscated all 2348 kg worth of gold, but they've been investigating for 2 years. So wouldn't they have sold alot of it rather than stockpiling 2 ton worth of gold?2. How come metal detectors don't pick it up at customs?3. How do the authorities work something like this out? Are they working with the other countries law enforcement, whistle blower perhaps?

If you buy gold chain or gold ring or whatever and smells like "you know what" then you know where they come from.

This is gonna sound dumb but can't they legally bring it over? Or do they have to pay something to bring it?

if they legally brought it, they'd have to pay a tax on it. But if they smuggled it in without paying the tax, they'd make a higher profit, cos they'd sell it at the same price of pple who did pay the tax. Mind you this isnt for gold jewelry, this is for like raw gold.
