South Korean prosecutors are seeking an arrest warrant for former president Park Geun Hye

To further investigate Park's charges of bribery and abuse of power that ultimately led to her impeachment this month, the prosecutors have officially requested an arrest warrant on March 27.

The request is made 5 days after Park was questioned for more than 20 hours at the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office in southern Seoul.

Meanwhile, her confidant Choi Soon Sil and Samsung heir Lee Jae Yong have been arrested and are currently under investigation for their suspicious relation and number of charges regarding Park Geun Hye's scandal.

Park Geun Hye will become the first Korean leader to be arrested since 2 military dictators' arrest in the mid-1990s for corruption and mutiny charges. If convicted, she can face a minimum of 10 years in prison.

Unfortunately this is the world we live in (no matter where you live. (some are worse than others obviously). The world as it is, and add corruption and people who feed off of populations of people with lies and deception, makes me want to go off the grid and live the way people used to live before technology. The problem with that is that I would go nuts without watching shows and hearing new music. Arrest her or not, there is some new person that could potentially be good, or bad or much worse  (since they all have the way to lead people in their favour. Not to sound pessimistic, I am sure you have all heard the saying "Talk is cheap" but these days, people listen to talk and promises. I have seen many political promises go down the gutter.  This world revolves around money now, whether we like it or not. If you can talk and make people love you and vote for you, you can get away with anything. Same goes with threatening. Us little people should just vote and hope the person we vote for is better than the others but not bad enough to threaten our (hopefully) happy lives. You just have to vote for who you think is the least corrupt of the bunch. Don't want to vote? You have no right to complain about the result. At least if you vote and the person is bad or the voting was rigged, you still have the choice to complain and try and change things.

Doubtful in this case. It is pretty obvious a good chunk, if not the majority, of the South Korean people have had enough of the political and business corruption this case represents. This is going to have to be a transparent procedure... 50 million+ Koreans all over the world will be viewing it under a microscope. But I assume South Korea also follows the legal principle of "innocent until proven guilty." The Constitutional Court of Korea did its duty. Now it's the Prosecutor's turn. I'm sure justice will be served. This case is simply too big to shove under the rug. Considering the evidence against them, it is very unlikely they will be acquitted. The friend will no doubt get slammed. Nobody gives a crap about her. The real question is how to sentence ex-Pres. Park fairly while preventing any perception of partisan politics on the decision.

Seriously? The owners are dead? How could she know the ferry was going to sink? Wasn't it like a train accident or the sinking of the titanic? There's too much google to do. If it's true, wow it's like an American prime time television soap opera with strange cliffhangers.

The Sewol was an old ferry boat purchased from a salvage. In addition to ferrying people, the boat also carried cargo. Companies paid the ferry boat owners to ship the cargo and they were paid remarkably well. The Sewol was legally allowed to carry 600 tonnes of cargo. On the day of the accident, the boat was carrying 2700 tonnes of cargo. It was improperly secured and when an inexperienced crew member who had never steered a boat that heavy, made a fatal error in the degree of turn, all the cargo shifted and capsized the boat. Investigative reports provide a great deal of speculation like the Coast Guard knew how heavy the boat was because they were taking bribes from the owners and delayed rescue efforts. The entire Coast Guard was dissolved by President Park. This tragedy is said to have started the quest to have President Park impeached allegedly because investigators found allegations of collusion between the owners and the government.

OMG, you are so right about the Coast Guard! I could never understand how in 2 hours they couldn't save the kids!!!! This is the 21st century, come on, emergency crews respond within minutes to a crash, and a boat is sinking and nothing, wow it's so sad p_p. I'm so heart broken for the kids who trusted the adults, even worrying for them, and they were waiting for help, which never came, and I'm disappointed in all the human beings that made the choice to not save those children. Reading your response, I realized now that it really was a choice and not an accident p_p.

You know when I read your comment, it made me think. Imagine we are the president of a country, I can bet money that within minutes or seconds of a terrorist attack, school shooting, tsunami, the sinking of a ferry carrying more than 400 individuals, we would be informed. That lady knew. wow. I'm so shocked now. Mental breakdown.

Bangeryun94 knows what she is talking about. And what she had commented are not faction. This accident trigger the starts of Park's investigation. There is corruption in politics. THat is normal and happens everywhere. But if it caused the death of so many people, truth needs to be investigated.

She does and she makes sense! She actually made me think! Yes, there is corruption in politics and unfortunately even in corporate companies, but to this extent where you would let more than 400 people die in a ferry, even Bush was alerted of the WTC attacks within minutes, even before getting in that classroom, he knew. I'm not gone comment on that because it's off topic and different somehow, but to think that an informed president as well as all the government officials and the coast guards did not move a finger when that ferry was sinking for more than 2 hours, and that the citizens (fishermen) went to rescue the people, I'm truly appalled. I'm glad they started an investigation and I hope they will get most of the culprits behind the bars.

Personally, I do *not* like the idea of PARK GEUN HYE being PROSECUTED for CRIMINAL ACTIVITY, and likely put in PRISON. However, I have NO PROBLEM *IF* PROSECUTORS want to try to RECOVER 'ILL GOTTEN' MONEY from PARK GEUN HYE ; which that might be more a CIVIL COURT type proceeding (so NO JAIL TIME). As far as CHOI SOON SIL and LEE JAE YONG ; *any* kind of CRIMINAL or CIVIL PROSECUTION and PUNISHMENT would be FINE with me. THEY are *NOT* an ELECTED S.KOREAN PRESIDENT.

why shouldnt she be prosecuted?? if youve committed a crime that is known by everyone (meaning you cant throw it under the rug and ignore it) then they should be in prison. just because shes a former president doesnt mean she should have immunity

She's responsible for the deaths of everyone on Sewol. It was her taking money from the ferry owners so they could overload cargo on the ferry that caused the deaths. It was her shielding and taking money from law enforcement that covered up the biggest police/blackmail/prostitution scandal in Korea that stalled because she contacted all those being investigated in exchange for money. And that's just 2 accusations. There are dozens more. She should be in jail for a lot longer than 10 years.

if you put the sewol tragedy aside, she has been found guilty of bribery and conspiracy with a cult leader. THATS why shes been impeached, why shouldnt they arrest her if they have enough evidence to impeach her? this isnt about personal preference, she committed a crime so she should be in jail. and this isnt a crime thats controversial (like lgbt rights, abortion, etc.) everone knows what she did as wrong and no ones on her side. i just dont understand why you think she shouldnt go to jail. i mean im not trying to yell at you or say your opinion is wrong i just dont get where youre coming from

I hear you ; your logic is sound. It just seems 'bad' to have an ELECTED S.K President, and the first FEMALE one, put in PRISON. To be honest, PARK GEUN HYE seems more just kind of DUMB and OVERLY TRUSTING, rather than CONNIVING and MANIPULATIVE. NO PROBLEM here to IMPEACH PGH over being *incredibly* 'ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL.' *LESS* FEELING like I want to see PGH in JAIL over it though. BUT again, I realize that others see this DIFFERENTLY, and have SOUND LOGIC to 'back them up' on it.

Which, THAT should take awhile. As in, WONDER *if* PARK GEUN HYE has any SWISS BANK ACCOUNTS ??? ... Likewise the same question for CHOI SOON SIL ???

The very fact that such prosecution is even possible speaks very well of Korea. In comparison, in countries such as the USA and the UK where leaders have broken principal laws as well as committed ultimate violation of international law by carrying out the war of aggression against Iraq, as well as proxy regime change wars in Libya and Syria, the leaders never prosecuted. Bush, Blair, Obama and others will never be punished for the seas of blood their policies have shed.

But reality is that transparency international lists Korea as one of the most corrupt out of so called 1st world countries. So why was her corruption any worse than thousands of others? ITS NOT. Korea likes to follow trends, things blow way out of proportions and this was one of thebiggest examples of that. Sure she's a criminal, but so are half of the goverment and business sector in Korea. It just became trendy to hate her.

Perhaps if she didn't have the deaths of over 300 high school students on her hands because she and her friend were accepting bribes from the ferry owners, our corrupt government would have given her a pass. Maybe it was the police/blackmail/prostitution scandal where she informed all those investigated in exchange for money. Or it could have been for taking millions of dollars from the Japanese to be used to make the remaining comfort women comfortable in their old age but they haven't seen a dime of it. Nobody has. Or it could be that we are just sick and tired of seeing assholes fill up their pockets at the expense of the innocent, the old and the poor.

This is how twisted average af people get when they understadn nothing. President has no fucking relation to maritime safety regulations but ofc even sewol ferry disaster was somehow her fault. How this all ACTUALLY started was 1) She was unreachable during the time of the crisis for 2 hours cause she was attending some personal meeting --> that got twisted into spiritual worship session with choi --> that got twisted into the entire accident being her fault --> that got twisted into the wreckage not being lifted being completely blocked by her... NONE of that is actually obviously true. It just shows what kinda fucking delusional bullshit gets written when the idiot mob aka the public is allowed to run rampant.

https://en. wikipedia. org/wiki/Sinking_of_MV_Sewol ... <-- Briefly, what happened is that the SEWOL was a JAPAN owned 'moth balled' (retired) ship. And the S.KOREAN family owners of it did arrange to BUY it from JAPAN. So then, they did an INTERNAL REDESIGN of it to CARRY MORE CARGO (needed S.K Government approval). Then, the SEWOL was like *more* than TRIPLE OVER-LOADED (so *way above* approved WEIGHT LIMIT loaded) when it was STEERED in ERROR by someone NOT the CAPTAIN (who was NOT even on the BRIDGE at the time). And the SEWOL 'lost balance' and 'flipped' onto its side ; they *suspect* due to the (*OVER LOADED*) CARGO SHIFTING INSIDE of it. And people SUSPECT that MONEY CHANGED HANDS to allow the APPROVAL of the REDESIGN and OVER LOADING by the S.K GOVERNMENT. Just figured it should be said about the SEWOL ; why the FAMILIES of the dead young people are UPSET in this situation.

So twisting this somehow as her fault is fucking moronic. Now what's equally rich is that one of our earliest arguement were about corruption in South Korea, where I pointed out how systematic and wide spread it is.. and you insanely defended how its not? ... well here we are .... The trial against her hasnt even began yet, they just issued the arrest warrants, but here we have you the moron, talking shit which crimes she was guilty of like its some kinda truth. --- Now should I be apologizing for the fact that I AM actually intelligent, that I had the privilege of living on a nordic country with perhaps the best education in the world, with least corruption in the world and best free press in the world which all allowed me to developed a reasonable rational mind that actually understands shit and doesnt follow utter bullshit like a moronic lemming or vindictive idiotic mob? Jarhon, your'e right about the fact that the Korean Coast Guard was utterly incompetent and the regulatory agencies that are supposed to ensure maritime safety were too busy stroking those they are supposed to regulate. But it is also true the buck stops with the president. She had nothing directly to do with the sinking and clusterfuck rescue operation. It would not have gone any better even if she was on a dinghy on scene or at a bar in Dodge City Kansas. But as president she was ultimately responsible for the fuckups on her watch. But the real issue isn't the Sweol, but how Park allowed Choi to basically run a rogue mafia operation within her government. Can't argue that she didn't mess up. But she is hardly the beginning or end of corruption. The real damage will be if a leftist KimJongUn lover is elected president in a backlash. Just glad we have Trump as our CIC. If South Korea decides to go lick KimJongUn's balls then Trump will hopefully pull out every last aircraft, missile battery, tank, US serviceman, and arty round from South Korea and transfer them to strengthen Guam's and Japan's defenses, and leave South Korea to face KimJongUn nukes and ChiCom bullying on their own. You started off fine but oh boy did that derail quickly. 1) SK is strategically crucial position and ally for US to hold.... oh wait, there's no 2)

I am *not* clear that N.KOREA actually wants to do a FULL MILITARY ATTACK of S.KOREA ever. After all, KIM JONG UN and the N.K MILITARY have a NICE LIFESTYLE as things stand now. BUT, I *agree* that a USA MILITARY *withdrawal* from S.KOREA would *remove* the *excuse* that N.KOREA has it to NOT ATTACK S.KOREA. The 'HAWK TYPES' in the N.K MILITARY would be 'shouting' about 'this is our chance' and like that. It would surely *boost* the possibility of an N.K ATTACK on S.K by at least 50% compared to what it is now (my guess). Personally, I think that an N.K ATTACK on *JAPAN* via MISSILE (some day) is the most likely 'first attack' N.K MILITARY manner of ATTACK that might happen. NOT so clear to me that KIM JONG UN really wants to kill his 'own kind' (so *other* KOREANS) in S.KOREA that much on a LARGE SCALE basis. Because N.K MILITARY *would* take some DEATHS too. And also, some sort of 'intervention' by say the USA or even JAPAN might happen. Myself, I think that JAPAN *hates* and *fears* the N.K MISSILE ATTACK *more* than say S.K or USA. Plus, IF N.K could do a *successful* MISSILE ATTACK on JAPAN, *then* N.K could *demand* an S.K SURRENDER. But, I actually see mostly N.K MILITARY and KIM JONG UN just ENJOYING THEIR LIFE STYLE. While making these 'ATTACK NOISES' with the MISSILE TESTS and all that. 'Dirty Tricks' (blow up a S.K building) are one thing. But an ALL OUT ATTACK *risks* a LOT as I see it for N.K MILITARY. BUT, if you have say KIM JONG UN get ASSASSINATED. And some 'twisted' type person like SADDAM HUSSEIN (IRAQ) takes over ; WHO KNOWS what might happen.

Still early 30s and you knowit, the fact that you call that middle aged, just shows how fucking pathetic your point is when you've lost on every single logical point and gotta resort to talking bullshit. Also I called YOU trash, not korean people. Cause you are. It's not an insult but a fact based on how you abuse dead children to drive your bullshit narrative cause you can't back it up with any actual facts. And as I CLEARLY said, I wish Korean people would one day join among advanced countries, but anyone claiming it is that atm, atleast compared to many social policies, human rights or number of other factors when compared to nordic countries or even most of europe is delusional. Understand the fucking difference between demanding greatness and belittling/insulting. ... Though if even simple logic is too much to ask for, I should lower my expectations.

As long as SK behaves like an ally, then we should defend them as we have done loyally, and at great cost in American lives, for the past 72 years. But our forces in the peninsula serve only one purpose - to prevent NK aggression. There is no wider strategic importance to SK. Our strategic posture in the Asia/Pacific region can be just as easily maintained by our bases in Japan, Guam, Singapore, Australia, and other operational locations - and with far less risk to our forces and possibility of tripping WW3 because a NK scud landed on a US barracks at Osan. And NK is the bastard child of the ChiComs. They protect it and enable it to threaten SK, Japan, and even the US. So if the South Koreans decide that selling a few more phones or duty free trinkets in China and becoming a tributary state bitch to the ChiCom NK enablers is more important to them than the 72 year old alliance with the US, then fuck them.

When it comes to the lives of 50 million South Koreans and the threat of tripping WW3, there is little room for supposition as to the intentions of 33 year old megalomaniac hereditary despots. Fatfuck Jongun and his cronies' only concern is maintaining their power. And the only way to do so is to remain the wardens of the world's largest concentration camp. The real victims are the 25 million North Korean slaves whose only hope for freedom and an end to the horror they live is a military action that topples the Kim regime. The Kim dynasty will never give up power voluntarily or peacefully. And his nukes and missiles are his insurance policy against that. Catch 22.

@3percenter <-- Yes, KIM JONG UN and his 'crew of thugs' are *strange* ; no question. I personally do *not* see S.KOREAN 'politicos' being 'cozy' with the idea of 'co-operating' with KIM JONG UN somehow ; at this point in time. So, here comes the 'next big question' as I see it. IF N.KOREA gets the ability to use a MISSILE to deliver a NUCLEAR WEAPON strike on TOKYO, Japan ; will JAPAN just *accept* this as a *new reality* to 'live with it' in the future ??? And what about that *same* question with regard to WASHINGTON, DC ??? ... Having said all of that ; there has been 'discussion' that one could just load a 'NUCLEAR BOMB' onto a BOAT ; and cruise it into some PORT (MIAMI, FL) and BLOW IT UP. But again, my question to you ; is do you believe that say the USA and JAPAN plan to 'tolerate' a situation where 'wacky' KIM JONG UN can fire a NUCLEAR WARHEAD MISSILE at their CAPITAL cities ??? ... NOT looking for a debate on your answer ; just asking for your viewpoint.

Averting a military response to NK depends on how far the ChiComs are willing to go to squeeze their bastard child into giving up its WMD programs. As far as military options, that depends on whether your average North Korean People's Army field grade and junior officers would be willing and able to act independently and take the initiative. There can be no military action against NK without decapitating the entire civilian/military leadership from Fatass JongUn down through senior officers in key command positions. Otherwise the likely result would be the unleashing of 30,000 artillery pieces and thousands of rockets and missiles on Seoul, Incheon, and other major South Korean population centers in range. Plus the NK has huge stockpiles of chemical and bio weapons that can be delivered via shell, bomb, rocket, or missile. Nukes aren't the only WMD in the NK arsenal. If Fatass and his crony generals are no longer giving orders do those battery commanders take it upon themselves to initiate retaliation? A lot of South Koreans will die, and massive damage can be inflicted in just an hour of sustained bombardment. The CIA/NSA/DIA/ROK Intelligence probably have intel on how the NK command structure would hold up and react under decapitation. I think that is a major factor in deciding whether to seriously consider a military strike. As far as Japan, they can't do anything alone no matter how much they are threatened. Any unilateral Japanese strike on NK would risk ChiCom and even South Korean fury. It could trigger a regional war or even WW3 if the US defends Japan as it is bound to do. But time is running out on military action. Once weaponized MRBMs/ICBMs are fielded by NK any attack could trigger a retaliatory mushroom cloud over Tokyo, Seoul, or Honolulu in the least. Anyone who thinks Fatass and his regime will go down without unleashing a spiteful and vengeful response is delusional.
