A woman in her 20's who attempted suicide with a man that she met online was found guilty by a jury.

The Soowon court sentenced her to 6 months in prison and 2 years of probation.

The court explained, "The defendant was indeed suffering from a bipolar disorder, but the fact that she was able to contact the victim, choose a location of suicide, and prepare materials to carry out the act proves that she had the ability to know right from wrong...Because of the defendant's crime, the victim lost his life and serious damages were made."

The court also added, "However, the defendant was also seriously injured and was severely traumatized. The victim's family also petitioned to forgive the defendant, and so we are taking those factors into consideration."

The woman met the victim on a suicide-related website and decided to commit suicide with him. Two days after they met, they took sleeping pills in an empty house and also burned charcoal in order to take their own lives.

However, the woman woke up moments later, escaped the house, and survived. The victim did not make it.

WTF she woke up and escaped? didn't she want to kill herself in the first place and that is too light of a punishment

Black_wind tyneexxx Friday, October 14, 2016

well, many people who attempt suicide decide they don't want to die afterall while they are at it.....

micahxo_lu Friday, October 14, 2016

Honestly why is she going to prison? She should be getting mental health care, not rotting in prison for 6 months.

bangeryun94 micahxo_lu Saturday, October 15, 2016

She fled the scene and didn't call for help that perhaps could have saved him.

micahxo_lu bangeryun94 Saturday, October 15, 2016

Well I'm not sure if she didn't call for help, it doesn't really say who reported the incident. But prison or not, she needs access to mental health care.

bangeryun94 micahxo_lu Saturday, October 15, 2016

You're right. It doesn't say HERE who reported the incident. This happened quite some time ago.

michinpabo Thursday, October 13, 2016

What was she guilty of?

how the hell did she "wake up moments later"? sounds super fishy to me. i think it would take a lot to knock that dude out, so if she did the same, how was she able to just miraculously wake up only MOMENTS LATER? i think there is more to this than some woman who just got "lucky" and then chickened out from a suicide pact.

NinjaPandaChu lmm913 Thursday, October 13, 2016

Might be that some people metabolize drugs and things differently? Unless you were under the impression that everyone processes substances in the EXACT same way, in which case you are quite mistaken.

lmm913 NinjaPandaChu Friday, October 14, 2016

every human's body works differently? you dont say. here's the thing though. she supposedly took enough pills to knock herself out and yet magically wakes up just moments later. PLEASE. typically when people take a sleeping pill to help them rest they take 1 MAYBE 2 and are out like a log. yet this chick supposedly took enough to kill herself, and yet she just wakes up a few minutes later. Okay......

propanda lmm913 Friday, October 14, 2016

Well you can't really kill yourself with pills. It very rarely works out.

lmm913 propanda Friday, October 14, 2016

i get that, but its not like she just took some pills and was just going to drift off to nothingness. the were trying to die from smoke inhalation/carbon monoxide. the dude died but she just up and left. they never stated that she had to go to the hospital and had to have her stomach pumped, or treated for smoke/carbon inhalation. something just doesnt seem right about her story

People don't need punishment for attempting suicide. They need treatment.

RAS33 OhMyGuy Friday, October 14, 2016

assiting suicide, it's basically killing

edward75890 RAS33 Friday, October 14, 2016

No it not coming from a student going to Harvard studying laws in American and out of the country

bangeryun94 OhMyGuy Saturday, October 15, 2016

She got the prison because she left and didn't call for help or assistance that might have saved the man.

When I read the title my mind went straight to Dazai of Bungou Stray Dogs. Anyway, personally I don't think she was in her right state of mind. True she chose the location and materials but in order for someone to want to commit suicide they must be at their breaking point. I definitely think there's some sort of psychological issue there. Also, if the other person wanted to commit suicide too how is that her fault? Do they jail all the internet trolls or bullies that cause teens to commit suicide?

ladamenoire Thursday, October 13, 2016

Criminalizing suicide is cruel. Period. And frankly, I'm surprised it's this way in Korea - most places I know where that's a crime are very heavily Christian. Korea's not nearly so religious, and even those who are religious tend to not be crazy about it. Never mind the significant Buddhist population. I don't know. Suicide is a choice a desperate person makes. Why add to their pain?

PetalElf0331 ladamenoire Thursday, October 13, 2016

As far as the religious breakdown is concerned, from the stats and articles I've read about Korea's main religions, Christianity has surpassed Buddhism in number. Christianity has the highest number of people in S. Korea in recent years, so they aren't mainly Buddhist anymore, but I also think Korea has large percentage that identify with no religion. I may just be reading some incorrect stats, but this is what I've seen.

ladamenoire PetalElf0331 Thursday, October 13, 2016

No, I think you're right, actually, but the point is that most of the countries that criminalize suicide are heavily, heavily Christian. South Korea doesn't fit that pattern - the majority of people who are religious may be Christian, but like you said, there's a lot of people who identify as atheist.

PetalElf0331 ladamenoire Thursday, October 13, 2016

Sorry, I took your argument the wrong way, thinking you meant stats, not political and social structure. Korea may be more Christian than Buddhist, but it is definitely not structurally Christian like European countries like Italy. I never thought about that, it's an interesting point.

Eh, sorry, that's the Catholics who criminalize suicide by saying "you won't go to heaven/you'll go to hell." Protestants don't believe you can lose your salvation over that.

RAS33 ladamenoire Friday, October 14, 2016

they aren't charging hef witj suicide though?

ladamenoire  Jarhon (Banned) Friday, October 14, 2016

Korea is not religious the same way, say, Saudi Arabia is, though. It's not a theocracy. Don't facepalm at me. Not my fault you misunderstood me. And no, NinjaPandaChu, I'm talking literal criminalization. Some countries try to prosecute suicide attempt survivors for having committed a crime.

NinjaPandaChu ladamenoire Friday, October 14, 2016

I have heard that certain parts of the USA list suicide attempts under some types of crime just so the police officers have reasonable cause to enter the home to save the person(s) involved. Otherwise, they couldn't do anything. Might that be somewhat similar?

propanda Thursday, October 13, 2016

This is fucked up. If it was murder or kill I'd understand, but if it was suicide attempt I don't understand at all, I don't think person can be criminalized from attempt to end their own life. I get that she was part of other persons life ending, but in this case I think he was responsible of his life ending not her. She would need help not punishment.

That would be the case if she were a neurotypical person, but she has bipolar tendencies as well. She may have gone in with the full intention of killing herself, but here's the funny thing about BPD... you have lows... and then you have highs. Like it or not, she might have freaked out and her self-preservation sense overrode whatever else was going on.

propanda  Jarhon (Banned) Friday, October 14, 2016

There is only 39 comments in the page and I was one of first one's to comment.. The problem with that was that it was double suicide. People do those from time to time as well as group suicides cause suicide is terrifying. She didn't just prey on mentally ill person and made them commit suicide while getting something out of it, she tried to commit suicide herself. Only difference is that she got severely injured instead of died.

It's people like you who make other people what to kill themselves. Yes, you are a bully and a liar and you have proven that many times here. The problem is that you are either too stupid or too evil to care.
