Four out of ten young girls who have run away from their homes were investigated to have experienced sexual encounters.
The data was sourced from research material that was announced during a forum on teenage runaways which was held on September 20 at Daejeon Metropolitan Council. The forum served as a place to announce the facts on teenage runaways and suggest alternative measures that will decrease the percentage of youngsters that run away from home.
The research that was gathered and organized for this forum revealed that 38% of young girls in their teens who ran away from home have had some type of sexual encounters. These girls typically had these sexual encounters anywhere between the ages of 14 to 16. 32.6% of participants in this study answered that "there was more temptation to join the prostitution business" after they left home, 17.4% answered, "there isn't adequate work available" and 10.9% answered, "the chances of sexual assault increases."
What may be more surprising is that the people who suggested that these girls enter the prostitution business were usually their close acquaintances. The research revealed that it was 31.4% of companions (older and younger) who suggested prostitution, 31.4% of friends who suggested the same, and 17.1% of the participants answered that they decided on their own to make money by selling their bodies.
When asked about the reasons for resorting to prostitution, 21.1% answered that it was to "make money," 15.5% answered "because I was hungry," and 12.7% answered, "because my friends and companions requested."
