22-year-old girl complains about bashing from her parents for her weight

Buzz

On a recent episode of 'Hello Counselor,' a 22-year-old college student came on as a guest to make public her struggles to see eye to eye with her parents. Apparently, the girl was confused by her parents' contradictory comments about her weight and overall physical appearance. In a letter, she vents about her parents who sends mixed signals about her weight by declaring that she's too "overweight" and calling her names such as "pig," yet at the same time, egging her on to join them when they gorge on nighttime snacks.

The letter revealed that oftentimes, the family would order takeout knowing full well that she was dieting and then proceed to tempt her with the food. However, once she eagerly joined to feast with them, they would immediately bully her by nagging, "Haven't you had enough," making the daughter feel guilty that she even dared to come out and eat with them in the first place. Upset at her family for being so fickle, the daughter would be fuming by the end of this nonsensical episode. The clueless mother would then appease her with an unctuous apology and goad her yet again to eat something, which of course, the daughter unwittingly falls for. As soon as she even starts picking up a piece of chicken, however, the mother would yell, "How will you lose weight at the rate [that you eat]?!"

The father isn't too big a help either in this scenario either. As soon as he learns that his daughter is dieting, he complains, "Why must we stop eating for you? If you want to eat that bad, then come eat with us!" But once again the daughter is guilt-tripped when the father admonishes her with, "Please stop stuffing your face, you pig!" The daughter, who has had enough of her parents belittling her with conflicting commentary on her weight exploded, "Either don't ask me to eat with you or don't tell me to diet!"

After MC Lee Young Ja finished reading the girl's imploring letter, she beckoned the girl (Kim Minji) to come out on stage. At this point, everyone, including the audience, MCs, camera crew, and guests are expecting Minji to be some morbidly obese girl who can barely support her own weight on her two feet. However, contrary to what the letter made everyone believe, Minji turned out to be of average weight. In fact, she could hardly be called 'fat.' Some audience members immediately rolled their eyes in skepticism and the MCs were bewildered beyond belief at the sight of this girl, who was far from being 'heavy.'

As Minji further explained her predicament to the MCs, she was asked to reveal her weight and height, to which she nonchalantly answered, "160 cm (between 5ft 2in and 5ft 3in) and 55 kg (~121 lbs)." The MCs then turned to the audience and asked whether these are normal body proportions and the majority nodded their heads in agreement. One audience member was even heard hilariously exclaiming, "Isn't that normal?" Minji's parents, who were sitting in the audience, didn't seem to agree. The mother stressed that because her daughter is young, she needs to be "pretty" and lose an additional 8 kg, which would make her a flimsy 47 kg (~103 lbs). The father was also supportive of the mother's unrealistic expectations and asserted that to lose weight, [his daughter] shouldn't eat (I'm sorry, waht [sic]?). He frankly told the MC panel that he berates his daughter, "Stop stuffing your face, you pig!" and declared his distaste for "fat women," to which Lee Young Ja just laughed awkwardly. And then he went on to say, "Gyeonsang men tell it like it is," as if that would justify the comments he was making.

The parents aren't to blame entirely, however, as it was revealed that Minji has unhealthy eating habits. The father recalled a time when he found his daughter eating fried chicken all by herself late at night, holed up in her bedroom. Minji admitted that she loves fatty foods such as hamburgers, pizzas, pig feet, chicken, ddeobokki, and fried chicken and that she can eat a whole pizza by herself (girl, so can I). Because her family is always breathing down her neck about what she eats, she resorts to just eating junk food outside, away from their radar. She also confessed that after meals, she indulges in even more food including sweet drinks and snacks back home. Thus, the parents, in addition to being worried about her daughter's outward appearance, can't help but be a little concerned about Minji's health. But they are certainly going about the issue the wrong way. Minji may brush off her parents' derogatory comments now, but there is a possibility that she may develop serious eating disorders and maybe even start be disgusted by her own body.

As someone who also has dealt with nagging parents who made insensitive comments about my weight (Mind you, I'm around Minji's weight but also around 6 inches taller.), I couldn't help but feel a bit irate at the parents' tactlessness and the callous way they called her names instead of being supportive of her.
