20-year-old man is charged with sexual assault after helping a woman escape rape

Buzz
On January 27, a 20-year-old male netizen wrote a post that trended on Nate saying that after trying to rescue a woman who was being raped, he himself was charged for sexual assault.

According to the netizen, the incident occurred in Busan around 4AM in December. At the time, the netizen was hanging out with his friends until the late hours, relaxing after having completed his College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT). The netizen left to go home and walked down an alleyway to take a shortcut to the bus stop.

While walking down the alley, the netizen noticed that in a nearby corner, a woman was crying while in the arms of a man. As her jacket had been thrown aside, the netizen realized that she was about to be raped. The netizen explains that because he has two younger sisters, he felt he couldn't just pass by without helping. He stopped the man from attacking the woman, blocked him from running away, and even hit him.

The netizen provides a picture of where the scene occurred below:

In the end, the netizen explains that rather than thanking him, the woman charged the netizen for sexual assault. Although he attempted to fight the charge, because there was no CCTV footage of the incident, the netizen was unable to prove that he had actually rescued the woman. He had to pay a fine and tried to look on the bright side of things, saying that at least he could erase sexual assault from his criminal record after two years.

The netizen shares that he said to the victim, "Even if the assailant was holding a deadly weapon, I would've helped you." He also said, "Although [being sexually assaulted] leaves women with a sense of fear and a scar that is difficult to erase, you have now dealt me a huge blow at a time when I'm looking forward to going to college.

He continued to say to her, "If this same situation happens again, I will act the same way. And so, even if it's just one word of thanks, I want to hear it from you."

The netizen then ends the post telling women to be careful not to travel alone at night and that witnesses should always step up to tell the truth.

Netizens, however, were outraged by the story with some vowing that they would never help a woman in a similar situation ever. Comments include: "Ah... seriously I'm getting angry at this bitch.... This bitch ugh...," "Looking at the comments makes me more and more certain. Unless it's family, let's not help others!" and, "Hul... stuff like this makes me hesitant to help women out...."
