South Korea's football coach Hong Myung Bo apologizes for World Cup failure and resigns

Buzz

On June 10, football coach Hong Myung Bo declared at the Korea Football Association (KFA) meeting hall that he would resign from his position. Reflecting on the fact that South Korea had finished at the bottom of their 2014 FIFA World Cup group, he apologized for the team's poor performance and took responsibility for it.

To recap, South Korea lost to Belgium and Algeria with scores 1-0 and 4-2 respectively, and tied with Russia at 1-1. Some Koreans were so infuriated with the loss, that they even threw toffee at the players upon their return home.

I'm sorry, but did anyone else have an urge to stand up here and say--"BROS. AT LEAST WE QUALIFIED, RIGHT?" Jeez.

Anyways, this is surprising and unfortunate news, as just last week the KFA had announced that they wanted to keep Mr. Hong as coach for the 2015 AFC Asian Cup in Australia.

Mr. Hong has also had a reputation as being South Korea's star player back in the day, as he was the captain that led the national team to the semi-finals in the 2002 FIFA World Cup. He was a football player with many accomplishments, and played for multiple clubs (first Korean player to sign with an MLS team - LA Galaxy). Even as a coach, he was able to secure the bronze medal for Korea in the 2012 London Olympics. The video clip below, which was broadcasted on June 16th, discusses Mr. Hong's successful career.

With the announcement of his resignation, Mr. Hong follows the footsteps of the previous Korean national football team coach before him, Choi Kang Hee, who resigned just a year ago after taking responsibility for his team's poor performance in the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifications. Considering all the things the guy's already done for South Korean football though, I think he deserves a break, no?
