Actor Kang Dong Won has publicly apologized for past controversy involving his great-grandfather.

SEE ALSO: Kang Dong Won offered to star in new French film

Though he's already released an official apology through YG Entertainment, this is the first time the actor personally spoke publicly about the matter. He made his first appearance since the controversy at the Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF) for his film 'Master' on May 3 and addressed the issue head on.

Kang Dong Won stated, "Early this year, there was a controversy about my grandfather. I want to apologize for this in a public space. There haven't been opportunities or spaces for me to do so. With this chance, I want to apologize once again. I will continue to study and reflect on the truth of this embarrassing history. I'm sorry for speaking on a personal issue like this."

As previously reported, Kang Dong Won is known to be the great-grandson of Chinilpa- a group of Koreans who were pro-Japanese and collaborated with Japan during the Japanese occupation of Korea.

Not weird, not weir, people hating on knetz and not doing research before putting a comment~ They are not hating on him because he is related to a pro Japanese, people knew that for years and didn't give a fuck. People are mad because he tried to cover it up by THREATENING TO SUE innocent people who were just telling the truth. HIS ACTIONS are getting him hate.

Of fucking course they would be, they have every right to be "butt hurt" over this! But they are not even hating him because of his family history, but how he handle the whole thing.

People going around saying that he has nothing to apologize for... You all do know that knetz are not hating on him for being related to a pro Japanese, right?? People already knew about this for ages and he still was popular. People are mad because HE and (YG) handle this really bad... they were trying to cover this up by threatening to sue people that did nothing wrong and were just telling the truth. HIS ACTIONS are what's getting him hate.

Forget it, it’s useless to explain these shitheads the reason why the Korean public reacted this way. They'll only continue to demonize k-netz and the general Korean public just because. Their brains can’t handle the fact that he is not receiving criticism because he’s the great grandson of a pro-japanese traitor. He’s receiving criticism because he praised his pro-japanese relative, and when people initially started criticizing him, he or his agency tried to remove everything from the internet and silence these people by threatening to sue them & whatnot. And when the scandal blew up, only then he started apologizing..

Well he could have not praise him?? Was he forced to talk highly of a pro Japanese?? Was he forced to threaten people to cover this up?? It is NOT ABOUT HIM BEING RELATED TO A PRO JAPANESE!! But the way he handle the whole thing was WRONG, he does have to apologize for HIS ACTIONS

Baloney. This was something dug up by a fly by night news site to cause a controversy. He's been punished. He's lost money and CF deals. He also has a right to sue anyone that defames his character and causes him harm under Korean law regardless of his guilt or innocence.

That's why people gave him the benefit of the doubt and he was still popular EVEN WHEN PEOPLE ALREADY KNEW THAT HE WAS RELATED TO A PRO JAPANESE this proves that people are NOT hating him for that!! They are mad because he tried to cover it up by threatening people! That is wrong!

The problem is not that he is related to a pro Japanese, but that he talked highly of him and tried to cover it up by threatening to sue people who just said the truth

That's not the truth either. This was published on a news site several years after he made the remarks. Then the so called news site tried to deny they had anything to do with it. Once it hit the internet the witch hunt began. He's apologized twice and now I hope he sues anyone and everyone involved.

He still never mentions how he threatened to sue people tho which is the real problem. I already forgave him, he was wrong and it's trying to make things right, but saying that he has nothing to apologize for is wrong

He made the remarks in 2007. When he knew nothing about his great-grandfathers "collaboration". His grandfather was not listed in the pro-Japanese dictionary until 2009. All he had heard about his great grandfather was good things at the time because when he sold his company he had given away most of the money. Someone digs this up years later and uses it to destroy his reputation and career. He has every right to sue and no reason to apologize. Many of Koreans living today are the offspring of "pro-Japanese" families but they do not have to answer for in with their reputations and livelihood. He should sue the shit out of all of them.

u didnt read the timeline of when he "spoke highly" of his granddad being a GOOD businessman. he found out the past waaaay later (AKP updated that too) Even us reg folk dont know our entire family history. many Sk have ancestry/relatives who were pro-jap back then and they did it for whatever reason. he cant change the past he took back what he said about his lineage and is obviously STILL upset about it. my point is we cant keep grilling those who had no bearing on their ancestors decisions.

I also read a more detailed report of why he was added to the pro-Japanese list and it seems the committee that compiles the list had a lot of reasons to add him but also a few reasons not. A lot of business owners remained and cooperated because they felt like they needed to help their workers and communities survive. In the end he proved himself by giving away his fortune and it appears he may have helped a lot of people poorer than himself. The people that get to judge him 70 years later are coming from a place of moral certainty never having had to make those kind of choices. When your family tells you someone has been admirable then perhaps they know better than 70 year old "evidence". Just an objective thought.

They were stating facts that everyone already knew about?? How is it fair to sue them?!? And why mention other Koreans related to pro Japanese when they have nothing to do with him trying to cover this shit up in such a shady manner? Your "oppa could never be wrong" mentality is really annoying...

Then he should have apologized about talking highly of him THEN. Or just let the thing go, people didn't give a fuck about it. AND I AINT HATING BECAUSE OF HIM BEING RELATED TO A PRO JAPANESE! How many times have I said this?! Most people aren't!! People already knew and still loved him a lot, it was until he tried to cover his past up in such a shady manner that people started to get mad. You still don't get their point?!? Seriously I wonder if you really just don't get it or just pretending to defend oppar

The movie news site I believe is who they threatened to sue. They dug up the interview and the Japanese dictionary and posted the story. When confronted with the truth, the truth that this would hurt his reputation they took it down and tried to weasel out of saying they posted it. By then the damage had been done. The victim here is Kang Dong won, not the Korean public.

They tried to cover it up because it's a fucking bullshit reason to ruin someone's career. Jeez how hard is that to understand? Obviously you think it's just find to go searching for ridiculous reasons to harm someone.

No, they threaten to sue normal people who just shared the link around to. And they took it down because they were scared of YG, not because they thought that it was wrong. I feel like you don't get what defamation of character is... you can't sue unless what they are saying is false, so yeah, he doesn't have the right to sue people who did nothing wrong

Not in Korea. You can sue if what they say is true. Look it up. I certainly do understand libel laws in my country which is like you described. Not in Korea the laws are different depending on the country. Even British libel laws are a lot less strict than in the US. I don't know who they threatened to sue but I do hope they pursue it. This was a witch hunt. A story for click bait on a website that ruined a guy because he said some things 10 years ago. Just pathetic and pathetic to defend it in any way.
