Indie artist Yi Rang has gone viral.

She was the winner for the 'Best Folk Music' category at the Korean Music Awards.  During her speech, she talked about how hard it was to make ends meet as an indie artist, saying she made 420,000 KRW (approximately 360 USD) in all of January, and then 960,000 KRW (approximately 840 USD) in all of February.

Because she had to make ends meet, and her rent was 500,000 KRW (approximately 438 USD), she asked the audience if they wanted to buy the trophy from her starting at a bid of 500,000 KRW. Someone in the audience actually offered to buy it from her for 500,000 KRW and handed her the money on the spot, and the video ended up going viral.

You know what's sad, a lot of Asian countries don't recommend one to go into Arts. (Especially in mine) that's why we should all support this kinds of artists

Wow, she got 360 in Jan and 840 in Feb and that's when she seems to be one of the top indie artist (she's won an award)... It sucks, she shouldn't actually pursue it and look for another mode of income...

korean entertainment industry is so different, it's so hard to make a living. is it because of the high living cost?

I think it's rather the opposite. If she's living by herself, $400+ for rent is doable, but difficult. I think it's the fact that she's a musician and it's very hard to make money in this industry. Honestly, it hurts knowing that people have to struggle and live a difficult life for wanting to do what they love.
