BATTLE OF THE HYOS

Hyomin v. Hyosung

Two sexy singers. Two sexy comebacks. But in this battle, there can be only one winner.

HYOMIN - "SKETCH"

MV CONCEPT..................8
Hyomin's concept was a dreamlike encounter with an artist in a tattoo parlor. Shifting between one suggestive scene to the next, this MV sees her in his arms, on the bed, and in front of the camera. She leaves quickly, making you wonder if this was just a dream. It's all very well done and filmed, and the scene is passionate and intimate.

MV CHOREOGRAPHY.....6
The choreography was okay, what there was of it. The most memorable part is probably not one that you'd want to be remembered for, where her and her dancers thrust their hands between her legs to cover up her privates (which didn't really cover anything, as she was clothed). And the chair-dancing. Hardly the most engaging choreo.

MV ATTIRE......................9
Here she slips and out of costumes like a chameleon. We see her parade around in lingerie, slipping off a robe, booty shorts and a see-through blouse, sometimes just a bra or dress shirt, a midriff-baring top, and so forth. She shifts costumes so much in here it's hard to imagine the sheer volume in a scant three minutes. While her outfits didn't leave much to the imagination, they weren't all that amazing...well, other than amazingly tantalizing.

SEX APPEAL..................10
This is where Hyomin shines, without a doubt. The sensuousness and the intent were blatant and deliberate, and there wasn't really a doubt what was going on (until the end). The dancing wasn't necessarily meant so much to showcase dance moves, they were meant to highlight her. The encounter with the tattoo artist was likewise pretty steamy.

SONG................................8
"Sketch" is a slower piece, seductive and lush, and Hyomin wraps her voice around the song like a serpent. There are some beautiful vocal moments here. Overall, though, I think it's a weaker song, and that means it does not score as high in this category.

LIVE PERFORMANCE.....7
Some of it was on a chair, where she simply moved her hips, and then lay on the floor lifting her legs, the same thing as in the MV. I wasn't sure whether I was watching a performance or a Pilates session. To be fair, it was a slower song than "Find Me," but the choreo could have been more interesting. There was far too much emphasis on "look at me" than on snatching some compelling dance moves.

OVERALL........................8.0

HYOSUNG - "FIND ME"

MV CONCEPT............8
Another dream theme, this time a lot more dreamlike than "Sketch." We see her trapped in a gothic mansion, in a flowing wedding dress and various other grand trappings. There was a graceful sense to this one, as we drift lazily from one scene to the next, sometimes greeted by strange sights. I think we're tied here.

MV CHOREOGRAPHY...8
Ultimately, the choreography was better here, the standout parts being the chorus where she spread her arms wide, like an eagle trying to take flight. It was interesting and it looked fairly challenging -- I can definitely imagine her taking a well-deserved breather afterward. It wasn't the most amazing thing I've seen, but it was better than Hyomin's.

MV ATTIRE...............10
They both change clothes tons of times during their MVs, enough to make your head spin cataloging each costume change. Hyosung has a diaphanous wedding dress, an elegant senorita dress, an elaborate, white, pearl-festooned top and white silk shorts (for an odd Vegas-dancer look), and beautiful, lacy things. Though they both had dream concepts for their MVs,Hyosung takes this category as she looked stylish and graceful.

SEX APPEAL..............9
Frankly, despite the other categories, I have to put sex appeal firmly in the camp of Hyomin. That's not to say that Hyosung is not incredibly desirable. What I'm saying is the dreamlike qualities of the MV worked in some ways against her here, despite there being some standout scenes.

SONG.......................9
It's difficult to compare the songs. It's like comparing apples and oranges. While I think the vocal performance was better in "Sketch," overall "Find Me" is a better song, with interesting time changes in the chorus. I like the sense of tension here that culminates in a frenetic chorus.

LIVE PERFORMANCE...8
The live performance was where she killed it, at least compared to Hyomin. Where Hyomin was largely static, Hyosung was active. True, often she had limited space, but she made great use of that space, with expansive gestures and interesting shots. When D.Action's part was on, she was in the back, surrounded by male backup dancers. During the bridge, when she slowly lifted her arm, they lowered to their knees. Kudos to the choreographer.

OVERALL..................8.7

It looks like Hyosung won. If I was torn before writing this, I'm not anymore. But it was tough as a reviewer to score these, since some of them didn't lend themselves well to a higher score point. They are both lovely, alluring women, each with her own style. Not only that, but I respect them as artists, both with their bands and without. They're both quite talented, regardless of the outcome here.

So which one was your favorite? Who killed it, and why?
