[Single Review] LEDApple "Bad Boys"

LEDApple
When I think LEDApple, the word "fun"don't necessarily come to mind. From their debut up until now, almost all of their singles have been sad and the accompanying videos have used sci-fi imagery to deal with themes of being trapped and controlled by outside forces. Now it seems the so-called "hybrid rock band" is ready to lighten up their image a bit with their latest single, "Bad Boys".

"Run To You, it was a fun song, but it was a little high on the cheese factor."

We saw them venture in this direction a bit with last summer's swingy "Run To You". It was a fun song, but it was a little high on the cheese factor. While it was brave to try to establish a new kind of rock/dance group blend, having an instrument-playing rock group rapping in matching, fitted sailor outfits mixed in with choreographed dance routines to a cute, poppy song was just going a bit overboard and it came across as cartoonish. The guys took a break from the cheeriness and returned to their somber roots with their winter ballad "Let the Wind Blow", and now they're back on the bright side with "Bad Boys".

"Bad Boys" is a Latin jazz-inspired tune with its tongue firmly in its cheek. Sure, it's a little cheesy- I mean, they very nearly quote "Livin' La Vida Loca" in the chorus, and guest vocalist Kang Ye Bin asks (I'm paraphrasing here) for 'a drink as sexy as LEDApple'- but it's a self-aware kind of cheesiness that lets the rest of us in on the joke, which is what makes the humor feel more honest. It's a more mature sound than "Run to You", but it's still lighthearted and stays away from LEDApple's typical heavier fare.

An Improvement
This comeback is a step in the right direction for LEDApple. Their 'Music Note' series on YouTube showed us that this group has some great personalities. Combine this with the musicality we already knew they had and "Bad Boys" is their first song that really takes advantage of both strengths. Now that it looks like they've finally solidified a stable line-up, it's the perfect time to be coming into their own and showing us exactly what they're really capable of.
