allkpop TV Guide: Nice Guy Ep. 2

Official Synopsis: Betrayed by his girlfriend Han Jae Hee (Park Si Yeon), Kang Ma Roo (Song Joong Ki) uses Seo Eun Gi (Moon Chae Won), an heiress who has lost her memory, to exact his revenge.

Ratings: MBC's 'Arang and the Magistrate' (starring Lee Jun Ki and Shin Min Ah) retained its first place position as it achieved a 14.5% rating, its highest rating ever. Meanwhile, KBS's 'Nice Guy' achieved a 9.9%, slightly dropping from its previous day's broadcast. SBS's 'To the Beautiful You' (starring SHINee's Minho and f(x)'s Sulli) achieved a 5.8% rating and came in last place.

Recap of Ep. 2: Although Jae Hee screams at Ma Roo to stop operating on Eun Gi, he shoots her a furious glare before continuing to operate on Eun Gi. After confirming that Eun Gi will be well until the plane's landing, Jae Hee stumbles out of the area, shaken by the unexpected meeting with Jae Hee.

After landing in Korea, Ma Roo is pestered by Jae Gil (Lee Kwang Soo) and his questions and comments on Jae Hee. Abandoning him on the street, Ma Roo reminiscences about his past with Jae Hee, from his first encounter as a child when he hid Jae Hee from a boy to a street food date. Meanwhile, Eun Gi is at the hospital, diligently working although still recovering from the plane incident. Suspicious about Jae Hee and her relationship with the doctor on the plane, she plants a spy after Jae Hee takes out 1 billion won from the bank.

Jae Hee visits Ma Roo's home with gifts, when she comes upon a fight with Jae Gil involved. As the man accuses Ma Roo of meeting and seducing his wife, Jae Hee is shocked at Ma Roo's current situation. Jae Gil reveals that Ma Roo earns his sister's hospital fees and his father's debt by swindling money from women. After Ma Roo returns from the hospital with his sister, Cho Co (Lee Yoo Bi), Jae Gil confesses that Jae Hee had visited and hands him the envelope with money, which is Jae Hee's payment of her debt to Ma Roo. After realizing how much she gave him, Ma Roo runs out to search for Jae Hee but misses her.

Meanwhile, Eun Gi waits for Jae Hee and interrogates her on the 10 million won she gave to Ma Roo. Trying to give excuses at first, Jae Hee ultimately lies and tells Eun Gi Ma Roo was blackmailing her about knowing Eun Gi's crime with drugs.

Eun Gi flashes back to her ex-boyfriend, Kim Jung Hoon (Danny Ahn), begging Eun Gi to take the blame for him for having drugs. Eun Gi calls her ex and confesses, "It wasn't because of the company that I took the blame for you for having the drugs. It was because I loved you that much. You bastard."

Later during dinner, Eun Gi lets Jae Hee know that she contacted the police on her behalf to arrest Ma Roo for blackmailing. As Ma Roo returns from dropping the money off at Jae Hee's house, he's greeted by police officers who arrest him on the count of blackmailing. Ma Roo's sister, Cho Co, begs Ma Roo to stay with her, ignoring his pleas to stay out of the rain for her health. Bursting with anger, Ma Roo tells her that she can just die in the rain if she wants.

Ma Roo meets with Jae Hee in the police station, in which Jae Hee confirms that Ma Roo blackmailed her. Ma Roo stays silent throughout the whole interrogation, only thinking in his head, "Since I know better than anyone else that noona and I are from different worlds, I was planning to send you to the place you love." Ma Roo spends the night in jail and returns to his home, only to find out that his sister is hospitalized after spending the night in the rain. As he looks over his sister at the hospital, his face hardens when remembering his sister's accusations towards Jae Hee.

Eun Gi is riding her motorcycle when she gets caught up in a race with Ma Roo. Eun Gi loses control of her bike and she grabs a branch to keep from falling. Her hand slips on the branch, but Ma Roo catches her hand just in time as he recognizes her from the airplane.

kdramacrazy's Thoughts:

[ Note : This post reflects the opinions of the author, not necessarily those of allkpop ]

What fills the melodramatic storyline with so much potential for being unique is the layered characterization. With a secretive and dark past haunting all three main characters, the journey of just traveling through their transformations into their present personalities will be an engaging ride. The directing only enhances that with the sparse and well placed flashbacks: just enough to keep us with the story but still shrouding most of hte dark secrets. Eun Gi, who I already loved for her feisty personality, has a dark history too with her sacrifice for her love. Her relationship with Ma Roo will become so much more fascinating and complicated, not only because they both sacrificed themselves for their first love but because of the contrast in their present situation. Ma Roo lost all his dreams and is losing his sister because of his sacrifice, while Eun Gi seems to have it all with her chaebol status. With Eun Gi's painful past not only with love but also with her mother, the amnesia will play an interesting role in Eun Gi's character because the writer didn't set up a dynamic character like Eun Gi and then trash all the details with amnesia. And then how will this amnesia play with the relationship between Jae Hee and Eun Gi? Because they absolutely detest each other right now and we all know Eun Gi would quite easily work with Ma Roo to bring Jae Hee down.

And for Ma Roo's revenge, although we were left to think that the catalyst was his sister's failing health, I hope there's something more to that. Something hidden in Ma Roo's past, his five years in prison. If Ma Roo's reason for his revenge is his sister or his difficult financial situation or even because Jae Hee is ignoring him, then it contradicts everything the drama has built up to this point. Ma Roo's willingness to send off Jae Hee in his heart, his offer to take the blame, and his silence during the prison time. All the little hints dropped, it means that Ma Roo's revenge is propelled by something more than his first love, Jae Hee. And that what's make this drama even more different from the many melodramas that base revenge on one single reason, from 'parents' murder' to 'cheating husband'. In addition, basing revenge on "first love" is not only a has-been plot, but the reason for the revenge should be something understandable for the viewers, making the revenge even more engaging. Like many, I got annoyed and didn't understand/like Ma Roo for abandoning his younger sister to take care of Jae Hee (he could have even called Jae Gil for help earlier on before leaving). Yes, we know love for Ma Roo is all consuming and love is blind, but we've seen that many, many times before. So here's to hoping that the writers don't stop at love to create Ma Roo's revenge.

And here, smile when you can before we start our emotional roller coaster.
