allkpop TV Guide: The Moon that Embraces the Sun Ep. 17-20 (Finale)

Official Synopsis: 'The Moon That Embraces The Sun' tells of the ardent love story between 'King Lee Hwon' (Kim Soo Hyun) and a female shaman named 'Wol' (Han Ga In). Wol was born from a noble family and was slated to become Hwon's queen, but a nasty game of politics resulted in her 'death'. She is resurrected, but without her memories as a court lady, and afterwards brought up to be a shaman. Years later, King Lee Hwon and Wol meet again, but how will their love story unfold?

Ratings: With both KBS and SBS making way for the king, MBC's 'The Moon that Embraces the Sun', both broadcasting stations frantically postponed the pilot episodes of their new dramas to next week with the MBC strike pushing back the finale episodes of 'The Moon that Embraces the Sun'. With no competitors (KBS aired a 'Sungkyunkwan Scandal' special for those reminiscent fans and 'Princess Hwangpyung's Weight Loss', while SBS aired a 'History of Salaryman' special), 'The Moon that Embraces the Sun' was able to bring in ratings of 38.1% and 42.2%. With the high success of the drama, it's certain that we won't have to tearfully bade goodbye to the actors and actresses as they will most likely appear frequently with new drama offers and endorsements.

Meanwhile, all three broadcasting stations will be bringing in their new dramas, cleaning the slate. KBS will bring 'The Equator Man' (starring ZE:A's Siwan, Uhm Tae Woong, and Lee Joon Hyuk, who had acted as Prosecutor Yong Joo in 'City Hunter'), MBC will bring 'Kings 2 Hearts' (starring Lee Seung Gi and Ha Ji Won), while SBS will air 'Rooftop Prince' (starring JYJ's Yoochun and Han Ji Min). What drama will come out top will be left to next week.

Recap of Ep. 17-18: Hwon finally greets Wol as his childhood friend, only for Yang Myung (Jung Il Woo) to watch the heartbreaking scene. However, their meeting is interrupted by assassins sent by Minister Yoon. With the king and Hwon unprotected, Yang Myung intervenes in the fight to help save their lives, only to get stabbed.

The three escape by hiding, in which Yang Myung is brought to recover to his mother. After he recovers, he confesses his longing for Yeon Woo and his wish for her to stay by his side. Her answer is given by the nearby King Hwon, angering Yang Myung as the two fight for Wol. As Yang Myung wins, he relents to Hwon and drops the sword he had near Hwon's neck.

With Hwon and Wol flirting in the king's room and spending the night together after their kiss, rumors are abound about Yeon Woo's 'death' as King Hwon discovers that Princess Min Hwa (Nam Bo Ra) was involved in the ritual sentencing Yeon Woo to death, for the wish to capture Yeom's heart.

King Hwon confronts his grandmother about the death and evicts her, much to her rage. While Hwon and Wol get closer together despite the tribulations the two face, Yang Myung makes a deathly deal with Minister Yoon. He requests a place for his ancestral rites at Jongmyo Shrine.

Recap of Ep. 19-20: Yang Myung (Jung Il Woo) collaborates with Minister Yoon, and plans to usurp the king's position begin by spreading rumors of King Hwon's affair with the shaman. Meanwhile, the king's ministers try to instill support for the king with the possibility of Yeon Woo returning as his secret bride from eight years ago.

However, the ministers twist the truth to paint King Hwon in a negative light, by planting rumors that Princess Minhwa (Nam Bo Ra) had played a role in Wol's death and King Hwon had attempted to cover it up. While those implicated in the conspiracy are murdered, tension arises with the official coup d'tat beginning.

The conspirators enter the palace doors and fight against the king, in which the climatic moment approaches as Yang Myung turns his sword against his half-brother

However, it turns out Yang Myung had this all planned out with Hwon, for he turns his sword upon the conspirators. Hwon seems to already have known what would come for soldiers march in and a fight to the death begins. With the bloody battle ensuing, the conspirators begin to suffer much defeat and end up all dead except for one who aims his spear at Yang Myung. Ultimately giving up his life, Yang Myung lets himself be killed by the conspirator, falling into the arms of the sobbing Hwon. Yang Myunghands over the book with the insurgents' names to Hwon as he whispers his last words in the arms of the sobbing Hwon.

Meanwhile, Bo Kyung (Kim Min Seo) commits suicide as she hangs herself, unable to receive love from the king as well as her father.

As the king and nation recuperate from the bloody battles, Yeon Woo and Hwon begin the preparations for their grand wedding. After their honeymoon, King Hwon and Yeon Woo's son is shown playing with Yeon Woo's brother's son, as they look upon their children with content expressions.

King Hwon practices the gayageum for Yeon Woo to surprise her for her birthday, and tries to impress her with his performance. However, it turns out Hwon was only faking it as the music goes on although he had stopped playing. Yeon Woo laughs, and Hwon leans in for a kiss, bringing the show to a close.
