ask allkpop #4: Tips, Terminology, and Comment Platforms

Hello, we're back again with another edition of the'ask allkpop' mailbag feature! The response continues to be positive, so please keep sending stuff in! For previous editions, you guys and gals can check out the links below: ask allkpop #1 ask allkpop #2 ask allkpop #3 --- The questions presented below are not word-for-word as they appeared in the e-mails, mainly because they have been edited for spelling, grammar, and for brevity's sake, but the general tone of the questions have been maintained. So without further ado, onto the questions! --- "What makes a worthy tip? Is there any specific criteria?" Asked by: BananaZ Answered by: CM Generally speaking, the tips that get used are the ones that are direct and straight to the point. Included in the title is what the tip is about, and included in the body is a short summary and a link to the content. The content itself is usually a simple link to a video or article. In short, that's what I like to see in a tip. Now while I honestly do appreciate the enthusiasm of some of our readers, there are certain kinds of tips that usually get passed over. For instance, we don't often do articles on whichever celebrity is temporarily trending on Twitter, nor do we frequently do articles on YouTube hit counters, yet we still get dozens of those tips a week. Another one that gets frequently sent in is a fullEnglish translation of an article, and while I get that you're trying to make it easier on us to post, it actually doesn't give us much incentive to cover it. We have a lot of translators/writers, so while we appreciate the attempt to help, getting a copy/paste translation of an article sorta makes us want to skip it because it's implicit that it has been covered elsewhere. Probably the worst kind of tips are the angry and aggressive ones. It's not uncommon for us to get ultimatums disguised as tips that make the tipster sound more like a raving maniac as opposed to an individual trying to help. Pro-tip guys, e-mailing "YOU BETTER POST THIS OR YOU'RE BIASED AND I'M NEVER READING AGAIN" or "YOU GUYS NEVER POST ABOUT [Insert Artist Here], SO YOU BETTER POST THIS" is not a good way to make us want to use your information. Like most things in life, rationality and asking nicely helps. --- "Could you make a terminology page with Korean or K-pop terms that are often used in articles?" Asked by: Emma Answered by: CM I like this idea quite a bit, actually. We have a lot on our plate, but we will certainly get to work on this. --- "I am having trouble with the commenting, when are you going to fix it?" Asked by: Evelyn Answered by: johnnydorama & CM johnnydorama says: We are continuously working on fixing all bugs, and we are also experimenting with new platforms and technologies to create an improved community experience on allkpop. As I'm writing this up, we're actually working on implementing a new platform which will probably already be live as you're reading this. We apologize for the past issues, but they should be worked out shortly, if not already. CM says: Yes, the new system is already live, and though we do hear complaints about it, I believe it is a far superior platform. I understand that some are not pleased with yet another change, but I think this one will be around for a while. While the most common complaint about the current system seems to be regarding the increased difficulty in comment spamming, thus limiting the community chat feel, please realize that many were not pleased with the last system either for reasons of comment spamming and the system constantly eating posts. An advantage with the current system is that you can now have your own commenting profiles attached to whatever account you use to log in with. I think it's a great thing because you now have a profile to work with. That profile can let others know who you are, help check who replied to you in which thread, and help see your comment history. There are many other benefits, but it's just a much more fleshed out and complete system overall, in my opinion. Plus, one of the biggest differences is something that you guys will never see. For us moderators, the current comment platform makes it much easier for us to control the posts, which should be a net win for everybody in the community. --- "Can you review albums and movies more often?" Asked by: Lucky Answered by: asphodel To be honest, I've been flipflopping over writing another album review just because I really wanted to avoid giving people another reason to say we're biased. When I wrote the 2NE1 review, I had birds on my right screeching, "YOU ARE ANTI-YG", and then birds on my left crying, "YOU ARE PRO-YG AND THEREFORE ANTI-EVERYONE ELSE". It was all a bit discouraging since I didn't expect an album review to be a cause of such contention. As I was still fairly new to the staff back then, it was hurtful to have people accusing me of being a terrible writer and saying that I should burn in the seventh ring of Literary Hell for writing such offensive and blasphemous words (more or less). So... ...I quit album reviews. ... ...But then one day, I saw this... ...and it changed my life forever. So strutting down the pavement of the information highway, I too shall raise my head up high and say: "Yes, thank for your interest! allkpop will definitely be doing more album reviews starting in January." If you've got some recommendations, please send in a tip. --- "Why isn't [Insert Artist Here] trending?!" Asked by: Tuana Answered by: CM Actually, contrary to popular belief (that I see in the comments), none of the editors have any control over what trends on allkpop. True story. Therefore, if a certain group is not trending and you think it should be, then i'm sorry for your plight, but nobody on staff can help you out much. A common question is whether comment volume has any effect on the trending list, and I can tell you that the amount of comments on an article has no effect on whether an artist trends or not, so there's little point in spamming an article in an attempt to help an artist trend. ---
