allkpop TV Guide: Big Ep. 3

Official Synopsis: 18-year-old Kang Kyung Joon's (Shin Won-Ho) spirit suddenly becomes transplanted into the body of 30-year-old Seo Yoon Jae (Gong Yoo). Seo Yon Jae is a successful doctor who is engaged to high school teacher Gil Da Ran (Lee Min Jung). Gil Da Ran just so happens to be the teacher of 18-year-old Kang Gyung Joon. More problems ensue when 30-year-old Seo Yoon Jae falls in love with another woman.

Ratings: Although ratings for MBC's 'Light and Shadow' decreased to an 18.7%, the drama still held onto its first place crown. Meanwhile, both SBS' 'The Chaser' and KBS' 'Big' have been enjoying an increase of ratings with a 10.6% and 8.4%, respectively. With a surge in ratings for both shows, it only means more competition for the two and also for 'Light and Shadow'.

Recap of Ep. 3: While Kyung Joon is shocked at Se Young's (Jang Hee Jin) abrupt love confession, Se Young tries to spend time alone with "Yoon Jae", sending Da Ran on an errand. However, Kyung Joon rejects Se Young's invitation to drink tea together and carries Da Ran back into Yoon Jae's apartment. Kyung Joon then tries to convince Da Ran that Yoon Jae is a two-timer, which Da Ran just believes is a misunderstanding.

Angry that Da Ran doesn't believe him, Kyung Joon leaves the apartment and meets up with Se Young again. Se Young takes him to a bar, where Kyung Joon becomes drunk easily after a few drinks. The next morning, he wakes up to an unfamiliar surrounding and realizes that it's Se Young's home. Alarmed at the thought of what might have happened last night and what he had done with Yoon Jae's body, Kyung Joon grabs his clothes and runs home. There, he sees Da Ran waiting patiently for him and pretends to have been out jogging.

Still disturbed by the mystery of 'that night', Kyung Joon discovers Yoon Jae's packed suitcase and passport, realizing that there was a possibility to escape to a different country. While waiting at the airport, Kyung Joon gets his phone fixed and is flooded by unread text messages from his friend in the States, Jang Mari (miss A's Suzy). Belatedly realizing that Mari had arrived in Korea and that she had discovered the school he went to after posting a photo of Teacher Gil, he hastily rushes to the school.

Much like the entrance of Kyung Joon when he had arrived in hives, Mari awkwardly interrupts the assembly by walking straight towards Da Ran and demanding money for a cab ride while spotting Kyung Joon. Luckily, Kyung Joon follows immediately afterwards with his grand interruption of the school assembly. As Da Ran introduces Kyung Joon (in Yoon Jae's body) as a person who knows Kyung Joon, Kyung Joon takes charge of the situation and tells Mari to return to America, explaining that Kyung Joon doesn't want to see Mari after his mother's death. Still determined, Mari tells Kyung Joon (in Yoon Jae's body) that she will marry Kyung Joon.

Meanwhile, Da Ran catches Yoon Jae's suitcase and asks Kyung Joon if he created any trouble, since he's trying to run away. Kyung Joon admits that he was over at Se Young's house overnight and doesn't remember what happened, angering Da Ran at Kyung Joon's carelessness over Yoon Jae's body. The two become embroiled in a heated fight, which Kyung Joon regrets after eating lunch that Da Ran had made for him. The two reconcile after Kyung Joon tries to apologize and go to the hospital to submit his leave. The two then run into Yoon Jae's colleagues.

During dinner time, the doctors, Kyung Joon, and Da Ran discuss the time when Yoon Jae had first fallen in love with Da Ran. One of the doctors confesses that Yoon Jae had fallen in love with Da Ran before she had fallen down the flight of stairs, as he had followed her all throughout the wedding from her arrival in the elevator and even asked his friend to introduce them to each other.

Da Ran is delighted that Yoon Jae had loved her and thought she was beautiful. While Kyung Joon dismisses the discussion, he does ask about what stage Yoon Jae and Da Ran got up to. Da Ran is able to handle the hand holding and shoulder holding, but gets nervous as Kyung Joon leans in for a kiss...

kdramacrazy's Thoughts:

[Note : This post reflects the opinions of the author, and not necessarily those ofallkpop.]

I love, love, love the relationship playing out between Kyung Joon and Da Ran. That about-to-kiss ending moment? Gosh, I love the conflict with that one kiss (or attempt) because it'll most likely start the emotional conflict and confusion between Kyung Jong and Yoon Jae for Da Ran as well as the questioning of Kyung Jong about his emotions/romantic feelings for Da Ran, whether he's acting as Yoon Jae or his true self. Additionally, the bickering, but reconciling relationship between the two just make their relationship so much more adorable and ship-worthy. When they fight, it's not the usual melodrama "I love you, but I'm going to act like I don't" or some other frivolous romantic fight, but more like their relationship is paving a path for character growth as Kyung Joon is learning to connect emotionally to people (with his rehearsal of apologies) and Da Ran learning to leave the innocent, fairy tale world (and let's hope she grows a backbone too).

While I loved all the cute moments in the third episode, I did feel the episode was meandering a bit and didn't really have any substance until the dinner scene with the doctors. But, maybe that's because the exposition and character map were being set up. Nevertheless, I was disappointed that Kyung Joon and Da Ran weren't trying harder to find a way to switch bodies. While I like how Da Ran's character is going as she's starting to care a little about Kyung Joon's school life, I just hope it's soon so that she isn't so infatuated with Yoon Jae. And speaking of Yoon Jae, I'm interested in the new complication Yoon Jae's past will bring. Contrary to what Kyung Joon was pointing out, I think Yoon Jae fell for Da Ran for her character more than her looks as he observed her from the back. Man, is he a two-timing jerk or just a misunderstood guy?

And for all the miss A fans, a little about Jang Mari. I like the new character dynamic she has with both Kyung Joon and Da Ran's brother. Suzy's acting did improve from 'Dream High', and I like how much power she has over Da Ran's brother. Mari is the key to Kyung Joon's mysterious family and past, so I'm interested to see where her character will lead us.
