Rain, is that really you?
Share

Imagine yourself in Rain’s shoes right now: Your first debut in an American film (Speed Racer Failure) is currently the laughing stock of all movies, and the “Engrish” you’ve studied oh-so-hard for completely failed you. Nothing else could go wrong, right? Wrong! Celebrity magazine, People Magazine, tried to shed some light on the Korean singer-turned-actor by adding a interview with the 26-year-old in their latest issue, except the main picture of Rain is not really him. In fact, the picture was of Karl Yune (brother of Rick Yune).

What the hell was People Magazine thinking? Is this People’s mockery of saying that all Asians look alike? Or, is this People’s hidden message that Rain was and always will be a nobody? You tell me.

Rain Bi

i seriously think tht it wud hav been btter if the article didn’t come out AT ALL. yeah, not havng an article abt u in some intrnational magazine is wayy btter than havng ur article in the mgazine with THAT embarassng mess-up. oh the irony! n i dnt evn c enough effort in the dmage cntrol n in the act of fixng tht mess.
tht’s like a total slap in the face. it’s like a mockery 2 all asians in the scene, not only 2 rain. i’m not really one of ‘the clouds’ bt i still feel it’s awful, smthng like tht hppening DESPITE people magazine’s so-called intrnational status. or is it really an intrnational publicatn? i dnt knoe.. wht a mess.

Latest I’ve heard on this is that right after this went to press, alexis & the staff caught the error (too late). It ended up being a mistake by some rookie in the photo department (mislabeling the pictures).

I’m not saying that a lot more asians should be cast in roles at all. I mean if you want to think of it that way and say only 4.5% of asians should be cast in roles in Hollywood to reflect the percentage of the population, then that’s fine. But to be cast in a positive roles and not just typed cast as nerds, karate/kung-fu roles, etc, it’s more what I aim to see. You don’t see a lot of positive roles, just your typical engrish speaking roles portraying them in stereotypical parts. I understand it’s all about money, and how everything is geared toward white america and whoe spends the money. I get all that, it’s just gets me when something happens to an asian, every turns the other way. Even as something as minute as this People magazine article. I mean asians are seen as passive, they will not do anything, not complain, protest, or speak up. If someone makes a derogatory comments to an asian like using the “C” word, nobody does anything and let it go. But if the “N” word is used, everyone would be up in arms, and things will happen and changes made. I am by no way comparing this situation with what happen in People magazine, I am just trying to say sometimes you have to looks deeper into things, and I could be wrong, and this could be just a blunder on People magazine’s part, but to just let things not be questioned and say this is how things are is wrong. The only way things change is by questioning things and speaking up. I am not sure how this whole blog got to this, but all I am saying is what People magazine did was wrong and the cause could be that society’s stereotypical view that all asians look alike. It’s not like People magazine didn’t have Rain in the magazine before. He was in their “First Time Beauties of 2007″ list. And not they couldn’t get his picture correct this time around, when they are one of the top selling entertainment magazines? But do you think People will make an apology or somehow do a correction? Maybe, i could be wrong but i highly doubt it. we’ll see, since this is really a non-issue to people because it’s an asian issue.

13 million asians, which makes us about 4-5% of the population in the US. So where’s the incentive to market an asian star to asian-americans? At the end of the day, it’s all about making money. I think before you see asians star in the mainstream, you need asians implemented behind the scenes (as directors, producers, writers, record executives, etc). Right now, we’re pressured to be doctors & excel in school / discouraged to work in the entertainment field. I think as second generation asians start to have children and don’t pressure their kids like our parents did (more of an american attitude) along with asians diversifying in our occupation fields, and with our population growth – you’ll finally see some changes.

TheMix – To add to thmy last comment, I wasn’t talking about asians not being cast in roles. That’s just another point, it’s about being stereotyped, and a simple mistake like what People magazine did is just an example of how Asians are treated. We clearly know asians are a minority and that’s just how it is here in the states and that asians are second class citizens.

TheMix – Good point but you have 13 million asians in the US, and the United Staes is supposed to be a melting pot. Is it not?

Shawn – you can say that about the Asian market as well. Why hasn’t there been many Whites / Blacks / foreigners in general cast in starring roles in Asian markets? Why are foreigners usually casted as the villains & being evil? Etc, Etc, that’s just how it is.

    For kchan21, comment 38 on page 2
You’re pretty snotty and idiotic to assume many things.
    1. First of, you are responding to my comments with replies that don’t make sense or has no basis as an argument. You said “If you have taken time to really read Charlotte’s comment, you would know that she meant Rain is lucky to be able to star in a U.S.”. Uhhh…I did, maybe you should take your own advice. Charlotte stated “He was lucky to have a small article about him in the magazine since this is his first American movie.” It has nothing to do with him being Asian and starring in a movie. I was commenting on how he was “lucky” to have an small article written about him and being sarcastic about him being Asian and having his picture incorrectly mistaken cause he’s Asian in a pretty much all-white pictured magazine.
    2. I am in no way a Rain fan by any means. Hell, I didn’t even know he existed before I heard him on the Colbert show. No one said he was on there all the time and a co-anchor, but it got the rounds on the internet.
    3. When I said he was on the Colbert show all this time, it meant he has been mentioned on the Colbert show several times. And the rivalry bits have been pretty popular, and he even talked about it on NBC’s Today show, from that I take it is a nationally televised show. I am not saying Rain is a house hold name or even that well known in the US among non-asians, but he’s been mentioned on the Colbert show, voted most influential person on Time’s magazine few years back and still is in the top 5 this year, and have sold out concerts at MSG. My point is that he’s not a nobody and is very huge in Asia. So for a magazine of People’s prestige to make an “honest mistake” or whatever you call it is right then you go with that excuse in your little brain of yours. People magazine makes tons of money, and can’t get a picture right? Why don’t you address that, a popular magazine can’t do verification checks on that? C’mon, please. But to me it seems like more than a simple slight since would you think it would happen to let’s say a famous white foreign actor? I probably think not. The dude is a mega-star in Asia, and to get his pictured mixed up is more than an honest mistake, it’s just a small yet very deep-rooted view of how white society views Asians. How they all look alike and how Asians don’t get the respect due to stereotypes. No one is turning anything into something big, but just questioning the cause of it. I mean people like you like to be blinded or close your eyes to everything, and accept things as they are. But you have to look at it in a different perspective for once and not in your small-minded ways. Why aren’t that many Asians cast in starring roles in the US? Why haven’t many Asians making a breakthrough in Hollywood?

oh and asians don’t really look alike to me.
sometimes i can tell between a korean, japanese, chinese, or a viet instead of just calling everyone chinese which is really mean.

again, People’s magazine needs to have a big excuse for this one.
never seen this kind of thing in my life lol.

I’m white, my husband is white, my kids are white, and my stepson is bi-racial–Chinese and white. And I tell ya, I’ve raised him since he was two and I’ve seen other members of his Chinese family, and they look really similar to me. Same with another branch who are biracial–black/white. And they say the same thing: some of us are blonde with simliar haircuts, and they always joke about how they can’t tell us apart ’cause whites all look the same.

I took a sociology course a few years ago and there was a section about how races have trouble distinguishing the features of other races. I mean, obviously different looking Asians is one thing, but ones that look somewhat similar is something else entirely. And that goes for any race. I think there’s a bit of hypersensitivity going on.
